Well, this is interesting...Gunder Udgarden, born in Norway in 1828 to Haagen Torstensen and Olia/Sigri Jacobsdatter, married Harriet Turner in Moose Factory on April 29th 1864. They had 9 children - including Mary who changed her last name to Gardiner (she is my grandmother) and married Peter Closs in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario 1907. I think the Mary you are speaking of is the daughter of Gunder's son, Augustine (Gus, Gustavus His name at baptism was Augustine)who married Emilie Moar. Some of the children of Harriet and Gunder changed their last names to Gunner and some to Gardiner. The Gunners seemed to have remained in the north while the Gardiner branches headed south. And yes, Augustine/Gustavus was a sailor according to Hudson Bay Company Records. Here is that info:
1884 - 1888 Apprentice at Moose District
1888 - 1889 App. Slooper at Moose District
1889 - 1891 Slooper at Moose River
1891 - 1892 Slooper at Moose Factory Post
1892 - 1895 Slooper at Moose District
1908 June 1 Retired

My great grandfather, Gunder, also Gustavus's father, was a cook for HBC and arrived in Moose Factory from Norway somewhere around 1858. I have more info on his birth etc and service with the HBC if you are interested. I would love to connect via email and get corrections/additions to the family tree I have for Udgarden. Happy to share as well....Many unknowns in my tree regarding the Gunner branches....have some on Louttit etc. I am green with envy that you are going to get to meet the Cree ancestors!! We so hope to make a trip to Moosonee/Moose Factory after I retire. My email is meow7161@gmail.com.

How did you make out in your search/

I did the family tree back 1 generation before Harriet Turner & Under(or Ud) Garden - he was a ship's captain according to a Metis book I have. Their child Mary was my grandmother - married Louis Romanet (Kabluk of the Eskimo. Their middle child (Mary or Maisie is my mom). I am planning a 1st time visit there to connect with my Cree ancestors.

I am searching for information on Hjalmar too. I have been writing Profile on him for the Journal of the Arctic Institute of North America. He died in 1967 and is buried at Norman Wells Northwest Territories. David Pelly's book on the Thelon River shows him on the shores of Schultz Lake after overwintering with Helge Ingstad trapping 1928 to 1929. (Ingstad and his wife went on to discover the Viking settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland.) I think Hjalmar trapped for some years SE of Snowdrift, Great Slave Lake before moving to Norman Wells. Hamar Mountain near Norman Wells is named after him. calpatti@hotmail.com

Wakeling in household of Thomas Wakeling, Charlottetown Royalty, Queens, Prince Edward Island, Canada.

He shows up as Frank in the 1891 census. In that census, his mother Annie's age is given as 32 and her parents' birthplace as Scotland; the household includes a Margaret Bell, 70 and widowed, who also was born in Scotland - thus likely Ann's mother.

Not helpful re John F, I know, but possibly of some interest if you are trying to track his family further back.

All depends on the requirement at the time.

George MOORE may have made application for U.S. Citizenship
That should show some personal information - may show names of his parents etc

Border Crossing Records: - If your GGrandfather was Cree it is possible that he had free access to crossing the border
If Not, Don't know if they were required at the time.so search Border Crossing records

Hi Comrade,
That is very good of you to help. However, Georgina went by Georgina and was raised by her grandparents when her father was killed in 1882 at the age of 22. Georgina was living with James and Sarah Johnston in 1891 in Marquette, Manitoba. I just noticed that it says she was born Manitoba but all other records that I have found say born Assinaboia Territory, NWT. I just can't find her actual birth anywhere. I think the 1891 census is wrong.
Thanks again
Peggy

Looking for NWT obituaries: Fells family

Hi there, I am new to the site and to the message boards. I am wondering if someone can help me find out how to obtain copies of NWT obituaries.

My aunt and uncle, Erva (Webber) Fells and Rethwisch (Rethwich?) Fells, have both passed away, sometime since 1990 and I was hoping to find out how to obtain copies of their obituaries. I don't currently know their exact dates of death, although I am hoping someone in my family may be able to tell me that much at least.

I don't keep in touch with my cousins - their kids - in recent years, although I would like to get back in contact with them as well. I don't know where any of them live anymore, however. I am hoping that if I find my aunt's and/or uncle's obituaries, it *might* say where their kids reside (as some obituaries do), which would help me to perhaps find my cousins as well.

If anyone can point me in the right direction to help find these obituaries, I would appreciate it.

Janice

Roman Catholic Church Record - Hay River

I think that a member of our family, Dolphus Calliou, was married in Hay River in 1935. He was RC and the RC Diocese of Grand Prairie reported that he had got married in 1935 in Hay River. NWT. Does anyone know how I could find records of this? He also goes by Dolphie or Adolphus and last name Callihoo. He was born in 1894 in Grande Prairie. I don't know the wife's name. I would think that by 1935 there would be civil as well as church records. I have extensive information on this family. I just want to know if anyone can help me find the above record. Thanks.
