I have a Lieut. Lebeus Gardner serving in the 5th Lincoln Militia during the War of 1812. Some of the men in this regiment were recruited from parts of what would later be Brant County. In 1831 a Lebbeus Gardner made a land petition as a resident of Burford Twp.

In the same regiment there was a David Gardner who appeared to have been living in Saltfleet Twp., Wentworth Co., a James Gardner, a John Gardner of Ancaster Twp., Wentworth Co., and a Samuel Gardner who may have lived near the Grand River about 1795. Having five men with the same surname in a militia regiment suggests that there may have been a family connection between some of them.

I am not related to these men but researching the Upper Canada Militia on the Niagara Frontier during the War of 1812 and writing veteran biographies. If you like to exchange information, please email me at fredblairorillia@hotmail.com with the subject "War of 1812".
