Sometimes on 1901 census, the Indians were just entered with their first [Indian] names and the last name is the tribe, eg Ojibway.
Re 1901 census
Try going into Ontario/Algoma and see if you can find Mary. I don't know if your area would be under Algoma or Nipissing. Look under Unorganized Territories in both districts.
