Need Advice on searching for marriage in Windsor/Walkerville 1920-30s

We have hit a total brickwall! Re: Alice Louisa Richman nee Wilson, my great grandmother. She was born Aug 17 1862 in England. She came to Canada with her husband Alfred in 1912. Alfred worked at the Ford Motor Company, but died in 1919 during the Spanish Influenza Epidemic. We have found his burial at Windsor Grove Cemetery, but Alice is not buried with him.
Alice Louisa is rumoured to have remarried, possibly to a Rudd,Rude,Rudge,Rhude? Keep in mind she was already 57 when Alfred died in 1919, so I think it unlikely she would have married much later than 1930. We have a photo of her taken in what appears to be late 1920s or early 1930s.
How would you find a possible marriage? I can find no Indexes for this era in Ontario.
I look forward to some great suggestions from those more familiar with Ontario records.
Pamela

John Barr - Emigrated from Belfast 1923

I live in Northern Ireland and have been researching my family history. One surprise I found is a great-uncle, John Nathaniel Barr, that I didn't know I had. My grandmother did give me a clue in saying he emigrated to Canada. I have since found that he left here for Canada in 1923. It seems he returned to Belfast in 1932 for a few months, at which time his address is given as 1009 Howard Avenue, Windsor, Ontario.

I'm not sure where to go from here. I'd like to know what became of him and whether he ever had a family. It would be great to get in touch with any Canadian cousins I might have. I wonder could you give me any pointers to help me take this further.

Kind regards,
Ivan

PS. Here is some mroe detail on what I know thus far:

John Nathaniel Barr born 24th Nov 1897 at Somerset, Coleraine, County Londonderry. His father was David Barr, a gardener and his mother was Annie McKinley. He was the youngest of five. His siblings were Elizabeth, Annie, Margaret and David George.

I have found the family on the 1901 and 1911 Irish census. I have also found that John signed up with the 11th Battalion of the Royal Irish Rifles in 1914. He saw service in France with the Ulster Division. and I have managed to find his service record.

After the war he returned to the family who then were living at 8 Marlborough Gardens, Belfast. I have record of him there in January 1923 when he was refused a pension for injuries sustained during the war.

I then find him on a passenger list leaving Belfast in November 1923. He is bound for Quebec. I also have found a passenger list for 1932 with him returning to Canada after a trip home. The details on that are:

SS Duchess of York sailing from Belfast 23rd Sept 1932 arriving at Quebec 30th Sept 1932.

John Barr travelling alone, 34 years old, single, born Coleraine Co. Derry, NI, British nationality, Irish race, previous residency in Canada, Dec 1923-June 1932 at 1009 Howard Ave., Windsor, Ont., occupation saleman, returning home (to address given), passport 32752 issued Ottawa 11/6/1932

Info on my great grandfather

We are in seach on any info regarding our grandfather and his family. We do have some info showing that our Greatgrandfathers name was Thomas McLean born in March 1896 in Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada and his spouse was Adeline Beaudoin whose birthday we show as Jan 22, 1843 in Malden, Ontario, Canada. We show Thomas's parents as John McLean Sr. and his mother Pauline Deneau, Adeline's parents are Laurent Beaudoin and mother Adeline DeGuire. We also show that our grandfather whose name was Charles Henry McLean had a brother named Judson, John and a sister named Maud. If there is anyone that has more accurate info on any of these people and could tell us more about our ancestors we would love to hear. My sister and I have been looking for a number of years but don't seem to be making much headway. Thank You

marriage lookup: John Mullins and Julia Sheehan, c. 1852 (St Simon/St Jude?)

I'm looking for the marriage record for John Mullins, son of Edmond Mullins and Bridget Kennedy, and Julia Ann Sheehan (possibly the daughter of Timothy Sheehan and Mary Sullivan). Roman Catholic, in Rochester township, Essex Co., supposed to have married in May 1852.

I have online access (here at ancestry.ca) to the parish register of St. Simon and St. Jude, Belle-Rivière, Essex from 1858, where some of the church records for this family are found. However, apparently the Drouin Institute microfilmed this register starting from 1840. If anyone has access to the earlier records for this parish and can look this up for me, I would be very grateful.

My husband's grandmother, Alta Rushlow Grauer, was born to Henry (William) Rushlow and Hattie Tate Rushlow. We are at a dead end. We cannot find Henry/William and the next generation back--have even ventured into Canada with no success. From notes left by his grandmother, we have October 19, 1867 as a birthdate for Henry/William and December 27, 1945 as his passing. Any one share this branch of the Rushlows? Thank you.

Hi! Does anyone have access to 1849 birth records from L'Assomption Sandwich parish? (The Ancestry database doesn't seem to have any from 1849.) I am looking for the birth of Marie Louise Cusson or Cuson, to Leon Cusson and Marie Louise Nouvion dit Sansquartier. The date was March 2, and the year was about 1848-1850 or so. I do not find her in Detroit Ste. Anne records, either. Would this be in a hard copy of the Drouin collection that someone might be able to access? Help greatly appreciated--Thanks!

I am looking for informaton on Russell E. Kennedy, born in 1906 in Kingsville, ON. Parents were Isaac Kennedy and Anastasia McPherson. Russell eventually moved to Windsor and married (in early 1940s) to a woman named Eleanor; they moved before 1945, possibly to Florida. Any information on the Kennedy family would be greatly appreciated!! Am willing to share what info I have.

Simcoe County records - stray LAURIAULT

One of the volunteers at the Penetanguishene Centennial Museum & Archives, Genealogy & History Research Centre, is transcribing the notes of a local lawyer. His notes are providing a snapshot in time of our town and are one of those little treasures to be found in the archives of smaller museums. The following entry may be of interest to someone in Essex County:

August 22 1921
Draw deed Annie LAURIAULT of City of Windsor, formerly of Penetang, wife of Alfred LAURIAULT, carpenter, to John Francis LARIVIERE of Penetang, laborer, $350.00. East 48 feet throughout of the ? of Lot 1 East Peel Street, distantly from east boundary of said lot. Plan no 36. Taxes to be adjusted.

I've been able to dig back to Joseph Hickson (b abt 1801 in Essex). I think he married someone named Wealthy and they had Lorenzo (1837), Adeline (1939) and Hiram (1842). Lorenzo married Ruth Coulter (b 1840) and had Joseph, Asilla, Leonard, Elizabeth, Charles, Amelia, William, Robert Nelson, Effe, Milton, Gorden, and James Wallace. Leonard (my gggrandfather) immigrated to Michigan around 1905.

Other known links to area include surnames - Hatt, Dean, Lounsbury, Stockwell, Cole, Wales, Reid, Wickwine, and Bowen.

My great-aunt indicated that she had contact with Hickson's still living in Mersae. Anyone know if they are still there?

I'm trying to locate information on my great aunt CHARLOTTE ROSE STURLEY who married a FRANK BLANDON/BLANDEN and emigrated to Canada. Charlotte (or Lot, Lottie) was born 1890 in Poplar, London and I think Frank was also English.

They returned to England when Lot was diagnosed with cancer and she died June 1938. Frank returned to Canada. They didn't have any children. We have a photo of them as living in Windsor, Ontario and apparently they talked about going across to shop in Detroit. This Frank may have been in insurance and perhaps also local politics.

Can anyone help with this please. My mum was named after her so I'd really like to solve the mystery.
Thanks
Carol

SPARROW, DOUGLASS, SNODGRASS

Any information/contacts re: James SPARROW, b. 1829, probably in Quebec - possibly in Huntingdon/Gore area. (SPARROW brothers James, Jonathan, other?, came to Quebec in 1824; James [b. 1781 Londonderry, IR, m. Martha DOUGLAS(S)-her name and Mary Ann's are apparently coincidence - and Martha were parents of James, b. 1829.) James married Mary Ann DOUGLAS(S) ca. 1850; she MAY be daughter of John DOUGLAS(S). Children (all apparently born in Quebec or Ontario between ca. 1850 - 1869) were: Robert, Matilda, James, Catherine, Ellen Eliza Jane, Benjamin, Margaret, William. Mary Ann died 1870, James remarried, one son, Fred, b. 1875. James is listed in 1871 Ontario census as living in Mersea, but probably lived before this time in Wheatley/Leamington area. James came to Wayne County, MI, in 1880 to live with daughter Ellen GERMAN. Surname SNODGRASS is connected to above families, but don't know how yet. Will share any information; thanks.

Joan Taylor

CHADWICK'S in Windsor

Hello everyone, I am just starting my research on the CHADWICK & LEMARCHE lines, I have very little information on these lines. This is all that I have
Asa CHADWICK married Margaret LEMARCHE on April 26, 1809 at St. John's Angilica Church, Windsor, Essex County, Ontario. They had at least one known child born in Canada, George CHADWICK. I have his d.o.b. as Oct. 10, 1813, I have seen that he could have been born in 1810. I am looking for any other children born to Asa & Margaret CHADWICK, and who their (Asa & Margaret's) parents and siblings were also. George left Canada by 1839 for his first child, James was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. And sometime after 1846 they moved to Camden, Camden County, New Jersey, USA. I can be reached at debbieo@clearnet.net or Debbie Orner, R.D.1, Box 104, Frenchville, PA USA 16836-9726. Thanking all in advance for any help.
I am researching a peripheral line of my husband's. William Sweetman and Ann Vincent married at Scugog Island, Durham Cty. before 1844. They had 8 children. Their son Frederick married Mary Elizabeth Parcells in Sept 1875 in Gosfield Twp. Essex Cty. In Dec 1883, Frederick Sweetman married for his second wife Mary Jane Lowe. Frederick's sister Caroline Sweetman married Joseph Williamson in 1885 also in Gosfield Twp.and his brother Michael married Elizabeth Ann Elford in Gosfield in June 1884.
In the 1881 Gosfield Census I found William Sweetman's two brothers, Edward and Nicholas , as well as William and Ann with their 3 youngest children.
I would like to contact anyone researching any of the descendents of William and Ann Sweetman in order to share information. Ann Vincent Sweetman was a niece of my husband's 3X great grandmother Sarah Vincent Burr.
Thank you for any help Debbie Burr, Forest Ontario Canada

Ouellette/Ouellet searching roots of my Canadian ancestors.

Hi to all! I am seeking info on my Canadian/American
ancestors. My father was Donald Ouellette, of Nashua, NH.
He was the son of Omer Ouellette, who immigrated to New
England with his family. While some of the family returned
to Canada, some of the siblings remained in NH. Omer's
brother Leo, remained. Thier sister Diane also remained,
marrying George Stanley. I know the first names of a
couple of the sibling who returned to Canada, they are
Michael and Armand. I'm told my great-grandfather's
name was Jean Baptiste, the spelling of the last name
was Ouellet but those who remained in New Hampshire
spelled it Ouellette. Any help would be greatly
appreciated!

I had relatives that lived in Colchester North in the 1881 census (Walter Scott Archibald). What newspapers would have covered this area? I would like to make a trip there, to see if I could find out why they headed south to GA, but want to know what I'm looking for.

Black History & Research - DAVENPORT, William & Sarah

I'd like to put a few historical questions to the researchers of Essex County. I have been researching a Black family who resided in the Amherstburg area in the years between 1810 and 1819. William and Sarah Davenport and William's brother Benjamin eventually settled in Simcoe County about 1825 where they prospered. When their children were baptised in St. James Church in York in 1829, the priest recorded the birth place for at least four of the children as Amherstburg. In 1819, while he was residing in York, William made a claim for a land grant based on his service in the War of 1812 although no record exists of his service.
I am aware that Lt.-Col. Richard Davenport of the Kentucky Volunteers was also in Amherstburg at this time and saw action at the Battle of the Thames so I am presently looking into his history. It is possible he 'lost' a few of his slaves who were part of his retinue and they took his surname as their own.
I am planning a research trip back to Essex County but thought I would first see if the listers would have any ideas. I have contacted the Amherstburg Black Historical Museum and am awaiting a reply. The big questions: are there records of these early settlers in A'Burg and are they accessible? Am I chasing moonbeams with the Kentucky officer theory?
Any thoughts or direction will certainly be appreciated.

Pam

Another question. What would be some reasons for a couple traveling all the way from Colchester to Detroit so they can marry on Dec. 30, 1874?
I know one reason is her parents did not approve of the groom. But why in the middle of winter? And couldn't they find a minister closer to perform the ceremony? Is Detroit a romantic honeymoon spot?
Just an attempt to understand how things were done and what people thought in that time period.
Kim

I have a couple questions about the Catholic Church in Essex co. in the 1870's to 1905.
In my family tree I have James Butler, a Baptist who married Annie Donley, an Irish Catholic in Detroit 1874 by a minister. They live near Amherstburg. I'm guessing her father didn't approve, so they went to Detroit to marry. (Her sister Esther was married in St. Jean Baptiste Catholic Church in Amherstburg.)
From the 1881 census it appears James & Annie's children are raised as Baptists. But in 1905 Adrian, MI one child Forrest marries a Catholic girl Cordelia Meldrum, marriage performed by a Catholic priest.
Does Forrest have to be Catholic to be married by a priest? And what would his mother have had to do back in Amherstburg for her children to be Catholic? Would they have baptism records at St. Jean Baptiste?

I am looking for information on my great uncle, Billington Griffin. He was born about 1872, son of William and Margaret Griffin. He was married to a woman named Esther. In 1916, at the time of Margaret's death, he was employed by the Canadian Pacific Railroad. In his later years he was a 'teller' at the Stoney Point Bank. I have no further information. Can anyone help me find more?
