Here is a family in the 1881 census, for example (Frontenac Ward, Kingston, District 116, Sub-district C, page 92, household 489+). Can anyone tell me anything more about this family and their origins??
Thomas Crozier, Irish, 35, b. Ont, Piano-Maker
Mary Crozier, Irish, 27, b. Ireland ...House L. [??]
David Crozier, Irish, 15, b. Ont, Piano-Maker

I'm a Crozier researcher trying to make a connection between this Crozier family (and any others in the Kingston area) and the extensive family of John Crozier of Ballinamore, many of whom migrated to Upper Canada, beginning in the Brockville area.
Hello all!
I have recently discovered another of my GGGMothers, Elizabeth Walker born Kingston about 1804.
The only Elizabeth Walker I can find in the sparse records was baptized in St George's Anglican 01 July 1804.

She was the daughter of Edward Walker and Christiana ____?
Her siblings were Jane 1795, Joseph 1797,Robert 1800, Dorothy 1803.

Edward, John and Robert Walker ( Elizabeth 1768-1818) were all brothers who owned a tavern and then 2 hotels in Kingston in the ealry 1800s.
I dont know if they were UEL or immigrants from overseas.
I am anxious to converse with anyone descending from Kingston Walkers.
I have not been able to find anything on Elizabeth's siblings Robert, Joseph, Dorothy.

I think but have no proof that Jane married a McLean and later Peter Franks (proven) in a second marriage.

Elizabeth Married, 1821, John Adam Franks, a Pennsylvania German who settled Vaughan Tp as early as 1806.

In the parish records there appears to have been an Edward Walker married to Lucretia ____? I dont know if this Lucretia is the same person as Christiana ?
Yet another Edward Walker, barrister, was the son of Dr. James Walker UE and he married Harriet McLean in 1811 . He died at Ft Erie in the siege in 1814. Harriet died a few years later.
Any help would be appreciated.
Rob McGinn

Ryans and Savages in Frontenac and Ontario County

There seem to be a few mysteries surrounding the Ryans - On the 1881 census, Sarah Jane Ryan is listed with John and Eliza (parents?) It is possible she was not a daughter, but other relative. I am looking for her marriage - possibly to Hugh Campbell. Mary Jane (Campbell) Savage lists Sarah Jane Ryan and Hugh Campbell as parents on her marriage certificate. Mary was born about 1871 and is not listed on the census with Sarah and I cannot find her on census at all. was widowed and emmigrated about 1916 to the U.S. with daughters and Cecelia Ryan. Her emmigration record lists uncles Peter and John as contacts. Cecelia would be her aunt - yet obituary lists her as sister.

Any clues to these families would be appreciated.
Susan

I am trying to find any info on Gabriel Belwa who would have died in Frontenac Co (Kingston, Pittsburg area) after 1851 but before 1869. Anyone out there with any idea as to finding his death certificate. He was in the 1851 census on Howe Island with his wife Mary and son Charles. His wife was listed as widowed on the 1871. I am trying to find his wifes maiden name, when they married and who his parents are. I know she was born in Suxxex England arround 1813 and he in Quebec arround 1808 (re census info). Also does anyone know where to find birth/marriage info in Ontario prior to what ancestry offers.

I am seeking information about the Brewer's Mills - not the town but the mills themselves. What kind of mills were they? Who owned them? Any kind of history. My ancestors, surname BREWER, were lumbermen in the area in the 1800's and I'd like to know if there's a connection between them and the mills. I noticed on a Kingston Street Map that there is a John Brewer Park. My gr-grandfather was John Brewer. Again, any connection?
Any help would be appreciated.
Marg

Your great grandfather John Henry Brown, born about 1878, was a brother to Jemima born about 1876, according to what I have found. They were the known children of Robert Woods' first marriage to Grace (Colghburn?--thanks for the surname). Grace was born about 1850, dying 1880. Robert 's second marriage was to Sarah Elliott, born about 1846. Their daughter was Celestia, born 1 Sept (or 31 Oct) 1888, dying 7 may 1889, all buried in Sand Hill Cem. Your information plus mine ties Robert (Grace) to his parents John Brown, born about 1811 in Ireland and his wife Eliza Michell, born about 1816 in Ireland, both buried in Sand Hill. I have found siblings for Robert. They are Mary Jane, b. 1841, Agness, b. 1843, Ann, b. 1845, Matilda, b. 1847, Henry, b. 1854, Margaret, b. 1856. I have copies of the 1861, 1871 & 1881 census, Pittsburgh, Frontenac as documentation, as well as Sand Hill cem. records.
I am finally getting a handle on the Clarks in Ernesttown Twp L&A., and wonder if some of the Clarks in neighbouring Frontenac County are related.
In 1851/61/71 census, Henry and Mary Clark and their children are living on Con 5, Lot 15, Portland Twp.
Henry shares this lot with brother Peter Clark/and wife Hannah.
In both 1851/61, Henry's family includes an elderly Catherine Clark, born US with a birthdate about 1780. My assumption is that Catherine is the mother of Henry and Peter.
In many genealogy files, Peter and Henry are placed as the s/o Daniel Clark/Eve, UEL who are buried in Elm Tree Cemetery, Kennebec Twp,. Daniel had sons George (buried Elm Tree Cemetery) and William, to whom he gave/sold land, but the tie to Henry is unproven.
Is anyone working on this family?

Searching for information on Michael Cain born about 1865. He was my great grandfather. He had several brothes and my father had a picture of them at Pikes Peak. My grandfather's name was Edward Cain and was born in Colorado in 1882.

There was a story that said my Great Grandfather and his family was from Canada and when a family member got in a fight and killed a man by knocking his head off his shoulders the whole family migrated down to Colorado. I don't know how true it is - but maybe someone out there has information on our family. There seems to be a lot of Edward Patrick's, Joseph Michael and Michael Joseph's in our family.

If you have any information please contact me.

Can anyone help?

1) Baptisms - St. Mary's Cathedral, Kingston, 1841
O'Gara, Ann
Baptised June 25, 1841, born June 20, daughter of John O'Gara and
Catharine O'Gara alias Milarky
Sponsors: William Casey and Catharine Lyons

2) Baptisms - St. Mary's Cathedral, Kingston, 1844
O'Gara, Margaret
Baptised December 22, 1844, born July 11, daughter of John O'Gara and
Catharine Mellargy
Sponsors: Michael McBride and Ann Rawlins

3) Baptisms - St. Mary's Cathedral, Kingston, 18 46
O'Gara, Elizabeth
baptised November 15, 1846, born November 10, daughter of John O'Gara
and
Catharine Milllarky
Sponsors: Dominic O'Gara and Ellen McCarty

4) Confirmations - St. Mary's Cathedral, Kingston
October 18, 1843 - Catharine Ann O'Gara

May 15, 1845 - Mary O'Gara - 16 years

The confirmations give very little information but they verify the fact
that there were O'Gara's in Kingston at that time. I suspect that Catharine
Ann and Mary were sisters of John Jr. but I cannot prove that.

5) Marriage - St. Mary's Cathedral, Kingston
Farrell - O'Gara
Married November 18, 1845, John Farrell, son of Abraham Farrell and Jane
Clarke, parents of Drumhone, County Donegal, to Mary O'Gara, daughter of
John O' Gara and Catharine Millarky.
Witnesses: John O'Gara and Reverend Patrick Dollard

Mary seems to have been confirmed in May 1845 and married the same year in
November. She was only 16 when she was confirmed.

6) Marriage - St. Mary's Cathedral, Kingston
Crowly - O'Gara
Married January 2, 1851, Jeremiah, son of John Crowly (deceased) and
Ellen
Driscol of Kingston Mills, to Mary, daughter of John O'Gara and Catharine
Melarky of Brewer's Mills.
Witnesses: John O'Gara, John Elliott and Sara Bryner.

The spelling varies but you now have a maiden name of Catherine O' Gara
from the baptisms and marriage.

The first child baptised in Kingston was in 1841 so that may be an
indication of when the family arrived in Canada.

Kingston Mills and Brewer's Mills are both very small villages in
Pittsburgh Township, Frontenac County, Ontario. They are not far apart and
are both located on the Rideau Canal which runs from Kingston on Lake
Ontario at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River to Ottawa on the Ottawa
River. The location on the canal perhaps explains the occupation of stone
mason. Hundreds of Irish c ame to Canada to work on the canal, many were
masons. It also appears that John Farrell must have died and Mary remarried in
1851 to Jeremiah Crowly/Crawley.

7) Interment - St. Mary's Cathedral, Kingston
O'Gara, Patrick
Interred July 13, 1849, aged 23 years.
Witnesses John O'Gara and Patrick Purcell

He may or may not be a brother of John Jr. and a son of John and Catherine.
He's the right age.

8) Transcription, St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Kingston

Section V
Sacred
to the memory of
Jeremiah Crawley
county of Cork
Ireland
died in Ottawa 18??
also his wife, Mary Crawley
died December 22, 1866
aged ??
?? their children
also E. O'Gara
wife of G. Lesiege
aged 22 years

This gives you a glimpse at the life of Mary O'Gara and her sister
Elizabeth. Elizabeth died very young. She was born in 1846 so she died
about 1868.

In 1871 John and Sarah O'Gara were living on 50 acres of land on
Concession 5, lot 25 in Pittsburgh Township, Frontenac County.

I think these bits of info should be useful. Perhaps Maura will be able
to
locate a marriage for John and Catherine in Ireland now that you have a
maiden name

Horne family from Wolfe Island, Frontenac Cty

Trying to find out if Robert Andrew Horne and Rebecca Davis Horne from Wolfe Island had a son named Oscar Horne who would have relocated to Kent County, Raleigh Township, Chatham Ontario area in the late 1800's.I am trying to help my brother in law piece together his ancestors, and am pretty sure his great-great-grandfather was named Oscar Horne. Oscar's son Andrew (DOB:1874) married Sarah Youngblut (sometimes spelled Youngblood) and they resided in Essex County, Windsor ON. Unfortunately we don't have any documents for their marriage, or birth records for any children of Oscar Horne. All I could find was a marriage record for Oscar Horne, son of Robert and Rebecca Horne of Wolfe Island who married Margaret Mitchell, 11 Nov 1862. Trying to find out for sure if my Brother in law's "Oscar Horne (DOB: around 1840)" was the son of Robert and Rebecca Horne of Wolfe Island as listed on 1851 Census for Wolfe Island. I would appreciate any help I can get on sorting out the family mystery.
Knapp family - Boat Builders of Barriefield

I am trying to learn more about the family headed by James Knapp & Margery Stanclift. James Knapp died sometime before 1847, more than likely in Barriefield, Frontenac County, ON, and his wife Margery (born 1785 in Connecticut) died in 1850. This family were Boat Builders & James Knapp Sr. was in the Barrifield area from at least 1812.

James & Margery had the following children:

William Case Knapp (1816-1885) who married Mary Ann Kemp;

James Knapp (born abt 1822/6- died 1895) who married twice (1) Amy Ann; (2) Sarah Ann Rickey;

Sarah (NFI)who in 1850 received her mother's estate.

I also suspect there were daughters Hannah Charlotte Knapp who married William Young Barry & Eliza Knapp who married William Griffis--but I have no proof of this.

According to - "PITTSBURGH TOWNSHIP 1783-1948, an annotated Bibliography published by the Pittsburgh Historical Society c/o Pittsburgh Township Hall P.O. Box 966, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, K7L 4X8"; on page 30 under FAMILY RECORDS was listed the following- "Knapp Family Records - Copies of the family record appendix of the Knapp Family Bible, beginning with James Knapp and Margary Stanclift Knapp in the 1780's and listing births, marriages and deaths up to 1890's" Private Collection of R. Cardwell.

R. Cardwell is Robert Cardwell who lives in the Kingston area & who is a historian. Does anyone have access to the Knapp Family Bible records, mentioned above?

I would love to know what is listed in this Bible.

Thanks,
Cheryl (Kemp) Taber
ctaber@mountaincable.net

Blackman family

Seeking any information on the death of 3rd great grandmother, Anne Blackman, wife of James Blackman. She died sometime between 1825 and 1839 in Canada. My only clue as to where in Canada comes from an old picture. The name recorded on the back is "T. Blackman" and the photographer's insignia reads "J.D. Wallis, Melainotype Artist, Rooms Over Parker's Drug Store, on Market Square, Kingston, Ont." The widower, James Blackman, along with his two sons, George Joseph Blackman and James S. Blackman, migrated from Canada to Buchanan County, Missouri, USA, by 1840. By 1845 they were in the Republic of Texas. The family arrived in Canada sometime between 1825 and 1839 from Sussex, England. Are there any kind of death records from this time period? Any newspapers from Kingston, Ontario?

I am trying to find a birth record/baptism/christening for my G.Grandfather who apparently was born in Portland, on Jan. 1871 -74.
I have tried every spelling for Johnson on Ancestry.com that I can think of. I am not familiar enough with this area to know where to look for church records - any suggestions ?
His name was Ebenezer Tremayne Johnson, parents were Caroline & Richard Johnson.
Hello All!

I descend from John Adam Frank, born about 1798 in Pa, USA, who married Elizabeth Walker of Kingston in Vaughan Ontario 24 March 1822.
Elizabeth would be my Gx2GM.
The Ontario Diocese Archivist could only find one Elizabeth Walker born in the correct time frame in Kingston.
She was christened 01 July 1804 at St George's Anglican in Kingston, the daughter of Edward and Christina Walker, sponsored by Robert and Elizabeth Walker.
I do not have a birth date for her but she died 17 Nov 1879 and she is buried with many early Frank family members in Maple Cemetery, Vaughan.
Edward and Robert owned/operated Walker's Tavern which later became known as the British American Hotel.

Also in Vaughan, Peter Frank married Jane Walker McLean 22 Nov 1837. This would be a second marriage probably for both of them. Peter Frank was born Pa USA about 1760.
Is John Adam Frank his son?
I do know that Edward and Christie also had a daughter Jane baptized 15 Feb 1795 and I am wondering if She is the Jane who married Peter Frank above.
I am interested in knowing more about the Walker clan in Frontenac and surrounding area.
Any Help appreciated.
Rob McGinn in Thunder Bay, Ontario
Searching Cooke of Belfast and County Cavan, McGinn & variants, Frank(s), Walker, Morris,Story,.

Fallon Monuments of Cornwall

I have been researching the Fallon's of Kingston, who emigrated from Ireland sometime prior to 1854. One of the son's of Dominic and Bridget was a Frank (Francis) who ran a monument business out of Cornwall in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Does anyone have any information to help me?

What were the designated areas to come into Canada? Are there records exisiting--and where? What would be the process for a family in the states into Canada--ie. would they be required to become citizens or register as aliens?

Thanks for you help!

Ward Family

I have been trying to find a William & Nancy Ward family. In the 1871 census, they are living with their son James and his family. There is also a daughter Jane living there too. In the 1891 census, James and his wife are living in the Benjamin Lloyd household. There's a Sarah J. Ward living there as well. Looking at her age, she's probably James' sister or sister-in-law. The history book "Away Back in Miller & Clarendon" mentions William (b. 1892), Nancy (b. 1894) and daughter Jane (b. 1841). The 1871 census says that William is American and Nancy is Irish. James was born in 1829 and it says he was born in Ontario. That means they have lived there a long time. I know they were living at Plevna. James and his wife are both buried in Ardoch. Can anyone help with this William & Nancy family? Thanks

Mitchell family on Wolfe Island

My gg grandfather William Mitchell and his wife Elizabeth(McCleary) moved from Clayton NY (or were married on Wolfe Island) with his brother Franklin and his wife Marion abt. 1863. William and Elizabeth had three children Homer, Edith and Thomas(my g Grandfather). There are differing reports that all three children were born in Ontario and another that says Edith was born in NY. Supposedly Elizabeth died 6 weeks after giving birth to Thomas. We have been unable to find a record or headstone. She supposedly was buried in a cemetary on the east end of Wolfe Island. William and children had moved to Orleans, Jefferson Co. NY by 1880 and Franklin and family to Pamelia, Jefferson Co. by 1900. Does anyone know how or where I could find out about Elizabeths death and burial and also if they were married in Canada?

Anyone have access to Canada Census pre-1851? Could do a look up for Thomas Marsh?

My ancestor William George Marsh left Kingston for Chicago in 1849 or 1850. He was just 2 years old(b in 1847 at Kingston)

I believe his father was Thomas Marsh(b ~ 1816 at Kingston) and his mother Johanna Mahoney (b ~1825 Ireland).

I do not know when Johanna came to Kingston, but as far as I know Thomas Marsh lived his entire life there until emigrating about 1850
