Oh forgot to ask. What is this "Sons and Daughters" of the American Revolution" you mentioned? And yes, I am Eliza's great great grandson and the descendency you emntioned is correct. Pardon Bentley also had a cousin, Gideon Bentley who was a celebrated Revolutionary War veteran. He died at the age of 106 and had lived to long that Gideon's father, Benjamin, and Pardon's GREAT grandfather, WIlliam, were brothers!
YOu are coorect, that Pardon's parents were John Bentley and Thankful Ballou (his second wife). I have the family history from a family reseracher in Washington State going back to England then William Bentley came to the colony of RHode Island in mid 1600's.
Also forgot. YOu were correct in that Jonathan Harris DID enlist with his brother Jason. I belive it was actually RE-enlist as I think he enlisted first in 1862 (the other info you also found) when he still lived in Sandy Creek but that regiment never went into battle and he was mustered out. Jonathan is mentioned several times in the copy of Jason's diary that he kept during his six months in the war. Jason was at Fort Strong, one of the five forts built to ring the capital. I'm not sure if Jonathan was actually at that fort or one nearby but they were in the same company so probably both at Strong. THeir brother William, also mentioned in the diary, was at one of the other forts and often came to visit.
I will definitately check on whether Eliza has a pension packet in Archives as that might hold the proof of whether they were married or not. In the 1865 NYS census, she is still living with Pardon and Charity but listed as "Jane E. Harris", married with one child (Elnora was born in 1864!)
I also found land transactions that appear to have been the purchase of a lot to build a house for she and Jonathan as in January 1864, a "Eliza J. Harris" purchased a lot from the same man who Pardon bought his farm from (so presumably nearby) Jonatha would have just enlisted and Eliza would have been pregnant then. THen in April 1865, a "Jane E. Harris" (name year she uses that same name in the census) sells a lot of land to her father's next door neighbor! I presume it was because it was no longer needed as Jonathan was most likely dead! If I can just PROVE that!! Thanks again!
