Are you still seeking information? I may descend from survivors John Delaney and his wife. My great, great grandfather was John Delaney of Forkhill, Armagh Ireland. I know he was in Canada by the early 1850's so the timing is intriguing. I am seeking more information re: this shipwreck and would love to hear more about your documentary.

I find them in the the 1860 Oakfield Township, Kent Co., MI census as Josiah and Martha Mastin and in the 1870 Oakfield Township, Kent Co., MI census as Josiah and Martha "Martin." In the 1880 Oakfield Township, Kent Co., MI census he is listed as "Joseph" Mastin. Was listed as married, but wife is not listed with him. Martha Mastin is listed separately, apparently helping out married daughter Nancy Davis with her new baby in the Maple Valley, Montcalm Co., MI census. Would like to know where the couple is buried if anyone finds out.

It is not often that any of us hear such words of praise. Thank you. There is much to be learned in other posts that can be applicable to our own cases. I too have learned much and been alerted to other sources of information by reading other posts.

Thanks for checking out the Toronto Star for the Jarrold obit. I don’t know about the Telegram… or the Globe, but do know from my own experience that the two Ottawa newspapers carried different but complementary stories, often with additional details. It was worth while to me to have the stories from both newspapers.

What might be interesting for Lilian’s friend, would be to read the accounts of the battle where her father lost his life.

From the Canadian Virtual War Memorial site…

http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/remembers/sub.cfm?source=collection...

“Moro River Canadian War Cemetery lies in the locality of San Donato in the Commune of Ortona, Province of Chieti… “

I would expect news of some sort to be in the papers around the time of his death, February 8, 1944.

If you are interested, you can Inter Library Loan (ILL) microfilms of newspapers from the National Library in Ottawa to your local library. There is no charge.

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/8/18/index-e.html

Toronto newspapers will also be available at the Ontario Archives in Toronto… but I don’t think they ILL their newspapers.

http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/guides/pdf/rg_212_news...

They are also at the North York Public Library. I don’t know if they ILL.

http://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/localhistory/canadiana2_c...

I don’t know about the other branch libraries in Toronto.

Brantford and Paris were in Brant County. Try posting your query to the Brant County message board.
Or go to http://brantford.library.on.ca/genealogy/bmd.php and type in Goyet. You can go to the library to view the microfilm or if you are not from the area, for a small fee, someone will do the look up and send it to you.
If you were sure it was Paris, you could contact the Paris Museum and Historical Society to ask them to research the Paris Star (local papaper) microfilm.

His full name was Johan Nicholas Herkimer and he was born 1771 in New York. His father was a "Loyalist" and banished to Canada after the American Revolution.

Johan was probably a "Ruff" name. German families would give each son the same first name to honor someone then call their children by the middle name during life.

He was granted 600 acres in Kingston. He worked with a brother.

He married Charlotte Purdy in KINGSTON the daughter of Capt. Gilbert Purdy. She was born in New Burgh, New York. Her father was also a "Loyalist." She died 1843.

There are 4 family tress at Ancestry.com showing his and his wife's name but they are all private. I am unable to access them directly. I have no i9dea if those trees have information in them about his murder.

Google search "Township of Kingston, Ontario, Pioneers" and his whole family is listed giving his death date as 1809 but nothing is mentioned about his being murdered.

I have recently (at last) found the William MARTIN I believe to be my Gt.Uncle, b. 1871 Surrey England. He arrived with his Wife Ada in 1906 & was listed on 1911 census in Mariposa Twp. Grateful thanks to the Nanaimo Family History Soc.-Ships PAssenger List Index.

I've been viewing some very good websites around the area but not found anything which may assist re Deaths/Burials, or children born. How can I learn more of how they may have fared?

His Brother travelled to Tillsonburg 1907 & stayed,(1911 in Norfolk) & nephews lived in Oakville & Hamilton etc.
Any ideas gratefully received.

Wendy.
Who killed Nicholas Herkimer and why?

From the book "History of the Settlement of Upper Canada, Ontario, with Special Reference to the Bay of Quinte" by Wm. Caniff, MD. MRSCE, pub 1869. This book can be found on Google Books in its entirety.

Colonel Hanjost Herkimer or "John Joost" was a brother of the rebel general Nicholas Herkimer. Hanjost Herkimer had served as an officer in Butler's Rangers. He lived on Lot 2 in Kingston. From another source, I leared that this land had been called "Herkimer's Nose", then "Herkimer Point" and is now called "Lemoine Point" where there is a park. According to the Caniff book, on page 108, Hanjost Herkimer had a son named Nicholas who inherited that land and was killed on it. Nicholas had "married a Purdy and had several children. His end was a sad one, being murdered by a blacksmith named Rogers, who escaped. A daughter was married to Captain Sadlier, another to an officer in the Army, and a third to Mr. Wartman." This murder occurred in 1809.

Where can I find a newspaper account of this story? I'd like to learn the given name of the man, "Rogers" who committed the crime and what the circumstances were that led up to the crime.

I checked all the death records up to 1934 in Wellington County paying special attention to 1922 to 1927 the years Alice was married and find no deaths of any children for her and Cecil Hilton.

So if they did have a child (ren) thye child out lived her.

But since there wwre no children in her grave with her I didn't think I would find any babies or toddlers dying.

Alice Wicks-Hilton died of Cancer of the Bowel.

YOUR BEST CHOICE AT THIS POINT IS TO CONTACT THE CEMETERY IN MIDDLESEX AND SEE IF CECIL AND THE REST OF THE HILTON'S BURIED THERE ARE IN A FAMILY PLOT.

WISH i COULD HAVE BEEN OF MORE HELP. IF I FIND AN OBITUARY I WILL POST IT. SO FAR NOTHING AND NO FAMILY TREES FOUND.

GOOD LUCK.

I'll keep looking but so far I don't see any children for Cecil Eversley Hilton and Alice Wicks.

Here is Cecil's family in case you don't have it.

Ontario, Canada Marriages, 1857-1924
about Cecil Eversley Hilton
Name: Cecil Eversley Hilton
Birth Place: London Ontario
Age: 36
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1886
Father Name: George Washington Hilton
Mother Name: Priscilla Amos Hilton
Spouse Name: Alice Violet Wicks
Spouse's Age: 29
Spouse Estimated Birth Year: abt 1893
Spouse Birth Place: Dresden Ont
Spouse Father Name: Ansalem Wicks
Spouse Mother Name: Florence Burnell
Marriage Date: 17 Aug 1922
Marriage Place: Lambton
Marriage County: Lambton
Family History Library Microfilm: MS932_615

The birth (1909) and death records (1934) and marriage (1924) stop at ancestry and she died 1927.
Thank you so much for looking up all this info. I know about the family of Alice in England. She was Alice Waite & married my husbands Grandfathers brother - Herbert Chester. It was just a mystery why she went to Canada in 1916 when her husband was in the war & it seems she was expecting Richard before her husband died!!I'm looking for this info for a Ruth Waite who saw my message & thought I might know the answer to the mystery. Joseph was the brother she went to see in Canada. Thanks again but it is probably one of those mysteries we will never know & there is no one in the family to ask any more.

Yes, this is Alice nee Waite married to Herbert Chester. Alice went to Canada in October 1916 - we have no idea why she'd go at this time as Herbert was away at war. He died May 1918 & is buried in Belgium. It seems Alice was pregnant with Richard before her husband died if he was born in 1918. Maybe Alice never married Arthur/Richard Donald!! Alices brother was Joseph Waite & I found one going to Quebec in 1910. Alice died Nov 15 1967 at Oshawa hospital & Richard Arthur Mar 3 1959.

Thanks for your help.

Yvonne

From what I see regarding the immigration records and this family's long history in Oshawa, Ontario my best educated guess is Alice Chester met her husband Donald in Oshawa after 1914 and married him there circa late 1916 or early 1917 as per the birth of the son.

Marriage records for Ontario for that period are not posted at ancestry.com

You will have to either check if Oshawa has a local archive or have request someone check the Canadaian National Archives for the marriage record and birth record of the son.

What do you have as to the brother she was going too in 1914? HAVE YOU LOCATED HIM ON A CANADIAN CENSUS? If you send me all the information you have on the brother, DOB, wife's name. children, location I will attempt to use it to locate his family in England records and get you Alice's parents etc. Sometimes the back door is bgetter thyan going though the front door.
You bask for help. Then when others give you what is available you respond it is all pure conjecture. Many of us so want a "Good Story" in our family history and what is better then a "sex scandal tale." But facts are facts.

Donald was either born 1918 or 1919 according to ship records on line. So no she was obviously not pregnant when she arrived in Canada in 1916.

What is obvious is she is part of the lower class in England. She is a laundress which is about as low a profession as a woman could have. Not that there wer a lot of career paths in England for woman back then.

Almost anyone who has been doing this for awhile can connect the dots here. It's WWI and her husband is off to war leaving her alone in England. So she is either shipped off or decides to join her brother Joseph in Canada for the duration. Or her husband in the army decided she would be safer in Canada with a World War raging in Europe. Doesn't matter she is documented arriving Quebec in 1916 a 2 full years before any possability of Donald's birth.

Her husband is killed in Belgium in 1917. She's in Canada when notified. So what to go home too? Return to England a widow and be a laundress? I doubt her brother would have let her. Anyone doing genealogy knows a single woman who is "Washing In" or Washing Out" as a career is one step awy from prostitution. Sorry but that is the way it was back then. No husband and illiterate working class you became a servant if you could find work or you worked the streets to eat.

So she marries in Canada and has Donald in either 1918 or 1919. Leaves dirty old England behind like so many other British subjects did for the freedom and better life people found in Canada.

End of story. No "Scandal" No she didn't run off with her lover while Chester was at the front.

Now either you or Ruth check Canadaian records and you will find the marriage record.

As to pregnancy and "Bastard Children" one only needs to be able to count to 9 or find the church records. Our good friends in the church had no hesitenacy to classify a birth as that of a "Bastard Child." Bastard children were barred by law from inheritance.

Sorry to pop your bubble about the possability of "adultery in the face of the enemy" but it simply isn't here.

Good luck.

Hi: Further to P_G Simpson's post, the Toronto Star does have the details you seek:

page 4, March 10, 1944
There is a small headshot photo of G. Jarrold with the following details:

"Pte. Gordon Jarrold, 25, Irish regiment, was killed in action in Italy on Feb. 8. He leaves his widow, Mrs. Josephine Jarrold, Draper Street, and two daughters, Josephine, 4, and Rae, 2. He was born in England but lived in Toronto since the age of 3. He had been overseas since Sept 1942. His mother, Mrs. Janet Carr, Toronto, also survives."

On page 9, of the same issue of the paper, March 10, 1944, there is a list of those killed.

He is listed as Pte. Gordon Jarrold of 3 Draper Street, of the Central Ontario Regiment.

As you may already know, a lot of public libraries offer access to the Toronto Star's Pages of the Past for free, either in the library or by using your library card number via your home computer. Perhaps yours does.

Hi; I just wanted to take this opportunity to say how much I have appreciated your posts from time-to-time as I read various boards. I usually learn a lot about various online sources from reading them. So sometimes (not in this case) but even if the original message you are replying to goes no further in terms of feedback, please know that your messages are read and appreciated. So thank you! I always love learning a new place to look for information. And you offer lots of helpful tips!!

I was just wondering if you have ever done any research into what was/wasn't published in the Toronto Telegram regarding world war two soldiers killed in action and whether you think it might be worth a try for me to take a look in that publication for this lady. Do you know if it is available anywhere besides at the Archives in Ottawa? I don't know if the Toronto Star was really the newspaper that covered the war happenings in the most detail, or if it would be worth a try to look in the Telegram too?

Thanks again

Hi: I had forgotten that you and your friend were writing from England when I added my post at the wee hours this morning.(So obviously visiting the library with free acces isn't an option for you or your friend.) Access is available online for a small fee though. If your friend would like to see the photo of her Dad that is in the Star and for whatever reason can't get a copy, please feel free to let me know and if I can help with that, I would be happy to. It is just a really small photo of him wearing a tam style of hat and there are about four or five small headshot photos of other servicemen along side the photo of Gordon Jarrold.

Glad that all of the replies were helpful and it is fun to see how everyone who replied added a little piece to help solve the puzzle. And especially nice to try to help your friend on Remembrance Day.

I did have hte information on here, but this is virtually all we do have on this man.
But the papers I am talking about are what her signed when he joined up in the army, giving his weight height, marital status etc. I live in England, and I am desparately trying to find access to these records. I do remember that at the time I had access to them they were freely available. I am trying to help a friend (daughter of GORDAN JARROLD) who is now in her very late 60s and who never new her father as he died when she was a baby.

Thank you again.
Lilian Fraser

Wheelchair access to the cemetery is possible, but may be by alternative entrance. For further information regarding wheelchair access, please contact our Enquiries Section on telephone number 01628 507200.
Location Information: The Moro River Canadian War Cemetery lies in the locality of San Donato in the Commune of Ortona, Province of Chieti, and is sited on high ground near the sea just east of the main Adriatic coast road (SS16). The cemetery can be reached from Rome on the autostrada A25 (Rome-Pescara) by branching on the autostrada A14 and leaving it at Ortona. The approach road to the cemetery from the main road passes under an arch forming part of the little church of San Donato. Cemetery address: Contrada San Donato - 66028 Ortona Porto (CH) Abruzzo. GPS Co-ordinates: Latitude: 42.336403, Longitude: 14.416677.
Historical Information: On 3 September 1943 the Allies invaded the Italian mainland, the invasion coinciding with an armistice made with the Italians who then re-entered the war on the Allied side. Allied objectives were to draw German troops from the Russian front and more particularly from France, where an offensive was planned for the following year. Progress through southern Italy was rapid despite stiff resistance, but by the end of October, the Allies were facing the German winter defensive position known as the Gustav Line, which stretched from the river Garigliano in the west to the Sangro in the east. The Allied force that had fought its way up the Adriatic took the Sangro river positions by 30 November. The 1st Canadian Division went on to cross the Moro river on 6 December against stiff opposition, and to take Ortona on the 28th, after a week of bitter street fighting. The 2nd New Zealand division made some advances further inland but thereafter, there was virtually no movement east of the Appennines until after the fall of Rome. The site of the cemetery was chosen by the Canadian Corps in January 1944. It contains the graves of those who died during that fighting at Moro river and Ortona, and during the weeks that preceded and followed it. In December 1943 alone, the 1st Canadian Division suffered over 500 fatal battle casualties. Burials other than those of members of the Canadian forces are almost all in plots 12, 13 and 16. Moro River Canadian War Cemetery contains 1,615 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War.
**************

the only birth in England I can find for this name=

Births Sep 1907
JARROLD Gordon Arthur
registered in Edmonton
volume 3a
page 598

********************

ONTARIO

Name: Gordon Jarrold
TRUCK DRIVER BY TRADE
of 6 ST DAVIDS PLACE, TORONTO
Death Date: 8 Feb 1944
Death Location: Military - KILLED IN ACTION
Death Location Other: IN THE FIELD, Italy
Gender: Male
Birth : 3RD JAN 1918
Birth Location: England

*************************

Births Mar 1918
Jarrold Margaret B
MOTHERS MAIDEN NAME Brown
Chelmsford
4a
925

Births Jun 1918
Jarrold Herbert
Des Forges
Sculcoates
9d
180
Hi Sarge

You say they were married - without proof, ? I had shown the passenger lists with Alice saying she was a wife but then, as we all know, thro the eons, porkies have been told. Maybe they did, eventually, maybe she had to wait till she foud out Herbert had died ... all maybe's

The "Fitches" family Tree on Ancestry shows only young Richard (MAYBE)& his family - All of which is unsourced/not proven - no actual birth date shown for Richard just a year of 1919, no parents shown - yes there is a death date of Oct 2008 - but this dos'nt prove he is the right Richard

Regretfully, without a paper trail its conjecture

The Canadian Virtual War Memorial says Private Gordon Jarrold died on February 8, 1944 and is buried in Italy.

http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/remembers/sub.cfm?source=collection...

Military Overseas Casualties are listed in Ontario, Canada Deaths, 1869-1934…

http://search.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=List&dbid=8946&amp...

The Ontario registration of death lists Gordon Jarrold’s last residence is given as 6 St. Davis Place, Toronto. It says he was British, born in England on January 3, 1918, but this would be best verified by his attestation papers, or a birth certificate. He was a truck driver. He was killed in action and was buried in Italy.

http://search.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbid...

A search for Jarrold in 1944 in the Toronto Star finds two mentions on March 10, 1944, which is about right from my experience, for news from the front to reach back home. Two mentions suggest his death in a Causality List and maybe an obit.

http://pagesofthepast.ca/Default.asp

It costs about $4 to search for an hour. News of his death and/or an obit published in his home town (?) newspaper may tell you a bit about him, or his parents.
