I have a copy of the 1828 marriage bond for James GRANT and Catherine DINGWALL of Charlottenburg. The bond is made by James DINGWALL and John CAMERON. James DINGWALL is Catherine's father or brother. The question is whether John CAMERON would have signed in lieu of the father of James GRANT. It is complicated somewhat by the fact that John CAMERON both signed the bond and witnessed his own and James DINGWELL's signatures, apparently as Notary.
Would John CAMERON's providing the bond indicate that he was a close relative of James GRANT? I have been trying to determine whether James GRANT's mother was Anne CAMERON, so I think John could have been James GRANT's grandfather or uncle.
Does anyone know who, specifically, was required to sign a marriage bond? Was is always a close relative?
