I have decided to start working on Find A Grave pages for the three cemeteries of Alexandria, (and surrounding cemeteries when possible). This can be very useful for finding ancestors. So instead of hunting each family down on these board I am going to post about the stones and the families I have found. If anyone has any information on the people, that I can add to their pages, and any family information please let me know. :)
I'm going to start with the older stones and work my way through, most because the newer ones are easier to find out about at this time.
Behind the church next to the cremation wall, separate from the rest of the cemetery there are four stones. At least three of them are from the 1800s, and hard to decipher. The first one (they are all facing the same way) say John B Kennedy (I haven't been able to decipher much more yet). Beside it there is a stone with no markings at all. Next, the stone says John, son of John of (Inn?) MacDonell Died May 28 185? (i believe it is an 8). The final one says Anne Kenedy (with only one N) the sides are very worn away. but I can make out ________ of ____ McDonald born ??? 11 1834 died ??? 14 1884.
Also around the church there is a stone dedicated to the Chisholm family. Janet Chisholm, the daughter of Alexander McDonell and wife of Alex Chisholm died May 1877 at the age of 76. She is buried with her husband Col. Alex Chisholm born in Kerrow, Scotland to Duncan and Janet Chisholm, Captain in the Royal African Corps and later settled in the County of Glengarry. He died October 19th, 1854 in Alexandria. They are buried with a Angus Chisholm who died in September of 1829 at the age of 27 years old. It is said on his side of the tombstone that his remains were the first buried in St. Finnan's Cemetery.
There is also a plaque dedicated to Harriet Kennedy MacMillan, she is the widow of Duncan Bans MacMillan and said to have a large number of children (at least 13). She was born in 1756 and died in 1839.
Finally there is a large stone dedicated to the family of Ronald McDonell and Roderick McDonell. Ronald McDonell is with his two sons Alexander and John and Roderick's two daughters are with them Margaret Ann (18 months) and Margaret Ann (16 months).
I have pictures of course if anyone would like to see them.
