I have Dougald (Of Rauri of John Roy, U.E.L) married to Mary MacIntosh at St. Regis in 1800, but can only find five children baptised at St. Raphaels between 1813-1818. I know that there was an Angus born to this couple circa 1801 (from his death record) but have not found the baptisms for the children between 1800-1812. I've checked St. Andrews, ND Montreal and St. Regis with no luck. Any ideas?

Looking for information on death of John Ronald Grant son of John Grant and Bridget Whalen. John was a catholic priest in Toronto, born in the Kingston area. He died 20, August, 1917 in Charlottenburg, Glengarry County, Ontario. I think he was visiting relatives that lived there when he died. His grandparents were John Grant and Jennie Mac Donell or Mac Donald. A Donald or Duncan Grant was the informant on death record I believe. Would also like to connect with decendants of these families.

Thank you for any help

Looking for information on John Simon Fraser, son of Simon Fraser and Ann MacRae. John Simmon married an Ann Kennedy, both were living in Charlottenburg, Glengarry. They were most likely members of St.Raphael's Parish(RC). John Simon and Ann aparently had 5 children.Ann died before 1838- 1839 when John married a Sarah Burke McMillor (have not found marriage record). I believe Sarah must have been a widow. Sarah maiden name is listed as Burke on her death record. After John Simon and Sarah married they relocated to Brockville Ontario. In their childrens baptism record in Brockville Sarah's last name is recorded as McMilor. John Simon and Sarah were the parents of the Honorable C.F. Fraser MPP(Commissioner of Public Works for Ontario) for Brockville, South Glengarry 1874-1894 when he died suddenly.

Thank you for any help

NEW--DNA link between Angus Cameron UEL and William Buy Cameron UEL

Greetings

Recent DNA testing has revealed some really interesting information linking two loyalist families.

Angus Cameron and his son Donald, sometimes called Daniel, emigrated from Scotland to New York in 1773 and arrived at Sir Johnson's land between Feb and Sept 1773. Both of them joined the British army and were given land in Charlottenburgh and Cornwall, Ontario. There is no record of this family having lived on the granted land in Charlottenburgh, and documented moves from Cornwall to Roxborough and then to Grey County, Ontario. All of the church records from this family come from presbyterian records. This family line is documented at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

William Bui Cameron (1733-?) and his wife Katherine McDonnell emigrated with the four McDonnells and their group on the Pearl and landed in New York in October of 1773, settling on Sir Johnson's land the spring of 1774. William also joined the British army and settled in Charlottenburgh, Glengarry County, Ontario. Records for this family come from the catholic churches nearby. This family line is documented at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

The brand new DNA results show a match for 35 out of 37 markers for direct male descendants of Angus and William Buy Cameron and a very very high percentage chance of a common ancestor within 15 generations.

The name Donald Daniel is not that common amongst Camerons in Ontario, nor as far as I can tell, among Camerons in Scotland. William and Angus' descendants are the only Ontario Camerons to have Donald Daniels (??true). And both William and Angus named their oldest sons Donald Daniel, suggesting their father was Donald Daniel (of course, they could have been cousins as well).

So here's a hypothesis I would love to hear comments on.

There was a Donald Daniel Cameron (1707-?) who was in Lochiels' regiment in Culloden who was from Ardnamurchan, Argyll who was transported to Jamaica or Barbados in 1747. His age is about right to be a parent of William and Angus. We also know that the McDonnells who organized the party of emigrants on the Pearl were Jacobites as well.

Other possibilities:
There are Donald Daniels in a region of Perthshire as well.
The other loyalist Camerons who settled in Ontario were from Glen Moriston, Glen Nevis, the Clunes farm on the Lochiel estate in Lochaber, and Rannoch in Perthshire

Does anyone have any clues that might help with this puzzle or other DNA information that could help untangle the Camerons of Stormont and Glengarry?

Thanks!
Kim

Locations: Ardnamurchan, Argyll, Scotland; Jamaica; Glengarry and Stormont Counties, Ontario, Canada; Johnstown, New York, USA
Given names of Camerons: Donald Daniel, Angus, William, Alexander
Associated Surnames: McDonnell

Margaret is listed in the 1896 census in Charlottenburg with Donald Bethune (brother of John, born in Inverness abt. 1835) so I’m guessing that that perhaps the whole family arrived after 1835.

John Bethune married Mary Ann Kennedy (abt 1857), born in Kenyon, Ontario
Daughter of William Kennedy and Annie Finnie (as listed on the marriage registration.)
Robert Kennedy (brother) is listed on one census residing with the Bethune family. Any info on Wm Kennedy and Annie Finnie would be appreciated.

Children of John & Mary Bethune:
Duncan Bethune
Margaret Ann Bethune (my paternal grandmother) who married William Cowie Hall
Sarah Janet
Malcolm William
Donald George
Samuel Bethune

I have found a note in a book "Historical Sketch of Kenyon Presbyterian Church, Dunvegan by Reverend Donald N. MacMilian as the birth of her son, Colin, was the first recorded for the church. "Colin McRae, born the 18th July, 1841, baptized on 25th; parents Duncan McRae and Mary McLeod who died at his delivery; residence No. 20-9th concession of Kenyon, Glengarry, Upper Canada."

Where would Mary have been buried? At that church? I later found mention that Roderick Chisholm was the first buried there (Mary McLeod's son by first marriage).

I am looking for Mary, and/or Duncan McRae's burial. Duncan died in Jul 1849, if his son's account is correct. Where would I find any death information on these two?

McRae family in Glengarry

John Duncan McRae, my g-g-grandfather, typed a 3/4 page "summary of his life" for his descendants! Written in 1915 he states he was born near Vankleek Hill in 1835 of Highland Scotch parents, Mary E. McLeod (d. 13 Jun 1843) and Duncan McRae (d. 22 Jul 1849) leaving a farm of 200 acres to eldest son, Finlay (Finley).

The farm was in the 29th concession of Kenyon County in Glengarry. He tells of working in a grocery store, a bar, and he also went to school until the teacher told him he could pass the test for college. He states it was at this time that he "adopted" the middle name of Duncan for his father since there was another John McRae in the general merchandising business that he had gone into.

He served in the American Civil War, and in 1867 he was in Decator Co. IN where he worked on a farm, then taught school. He married and moved to Linn County, KS.

In the 1851 Census of Glengarry, Finlay, was named head of house since parents were gone by then. Brothers and sisters of the household were Kenneth, 18 (working in Ottawa), John (mine ancestor, working in Lancaster), Harriet, 15, Catharine, 12, Collin, 10, Mary, 8, and Roderick, 6 yr. It appears that a widowed aunt was also living with them, Nancy Chisholm, 40. If Mary, the mother, died in 1843 was Roderick's age wrong? or was he not the son of Mary?

The 1851 Agricultural census has them living in concession 9, lot 20, with 200 acres. It appears that my ancestor may have been confused, being 80 years old at the time of his typing! Since he said the farm was in concession 29!

Any takers out there?

Scotland, possibly in or near the Moidart area. The family emigrated to Canada c1851 per family lore, with Donald Alexander McDonald, brother of Kenneth R. McDonald.

John Kenneth McDonald’s 1920 death registration data supplied by his daughter Catherine, says he had lived in Ontario for 65 years, and that leaves 5 years unaccounted for, and perhaps the family may have lived in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. The McDonald family lived in Glengarry Co., Ontario, Canada and John Kenneth McDonald lived there c1855-1872 when he married and moved to Caledon, Peel Co. Ontario. John Kenneth McDonald and his young family lived in Lochiel, Glengarry Co. Ontario c1880-1884 and then moved back to Caledon where they lived until about 1897 when they moved to Brantford, Brant Co. Ontario. He was an employee of the Grand Trunk Railroad.

Catherine McDonnell, wife of Kenneth R. McDonald, died in Glengarry Co. Ontario c1875, and John Kenneth named his first daughter Catherine for his mother. Catherine was called ‘Minnie’. It has been suggested but not proven that Catherine McDonnell may have been the daughter of a John McDonnell and a Mary McDonald.

Kenneth R. McDonald died in Glengarry Co. Ontario, uncertain as to time line and place, but conjecture it was the late 1870s to 1880s. The family thought he may have died in Lochiel but other McDonald researchers say no. It has been suggested his father was probably a John McDonald.

Donald Alexander McDonald was born Bet. 1800 - 1840 Inverness Co., Scotland, and died Bef. Jun 1895 in Glengarry Co., ON, Canada. This is all we have for him:
ORANGEVILLE SUN, Dufferin, ON - 27 June 1895-
Miss Minnie McDonald, dining room girl at Grand Central has just received word that her grand uncle, Donald Alexander McDonald of Glengarry County, Ont. has died leaving her a considerable sum of money. Miss McDonald's friends are glad to hear of her good fortune.

The family were Catholic and Kenneth R. McDonald and his wife Catherine, and his brother Donald Alexander McDonald would have been buried in a Catholic Cemetery.
Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you.
Death/Burial Record for Allan A. MacDonell

I have been unable to find any record of the death or burial (in St. Catherine's cemetery, Greenfield) of my great great grandfather Allan A. MacDonell. According to the gravestone for plot 224, which my father purchased, he is buried there with his wife, Catherine, and his 2 sons, Archie Allan and John Alexander, my grandfather. The surname on the stone is MacDonald, but that's another story.

His death occurred sometime between 1892 and 1901. His wife is listed as a widow, living in Greenfield, in the 1901 Census.

I have obtained a lot of new information since my last post, largely from the Glengarry Archives in Williamstown, but this piece of our family puzzle is still missing.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Linda

Dougald CAMERON

Hello: In a bid to find the family of my GG Grandfather Charles Cameron, I will relate the bit that I do know. That applies to the Clan Cameron DNA results which show a number of participants with the same first line of gene markers. In fact the ist two lines of markers match for participant # 29051 and the one from which I derive( #29230) from Charles Cameron through a son, William Charles. That 29051 was from Glengarry . I have traced it to Louisiana, Mississippi to Texas. Dougald was a convert to Roman Catholicism from the Kirk in 1828, I believe. He married Catherine Laroque. I traced their son, Allan to Louisiana, Missippi and Texas. I have absolutely no idea of Charles siblings or parentage, except in family lore it was mentioned in an obit of Charles youngest daughter that her ancestors fought on the Plains of Abraham.
That means the Fraser Highlanders. The tomstone of Charles reads B in Inverness-shire, but a grandson in a letter says his G/F was b in Quebec and his father was a soldier.
Charles sons were named James, Donald, William Charles and Charles James. HIs daughters had names Eliza, Mary, Maria, Ann (Nancy), Elizabeth ,Sarah.
Charles was b in 1783 and in 1790 he was enlisted as a Drummer in the Cameronian Regiment 26th of Foot. He was discharged in 1800 and is next forund in Town of York, now Toronto. Does this tale sound familiar of tales from the old days ? Enough for now. Thanks for any ideas.
Delphine

Daniel Kennedy had the following siblings:Catherine(unmarried),Donald Ewen (unmarried?), Christine (married John MacDonnell), Mary (married Joseph O'Shea), Annie (married Duncan Campbell), and Allen (married Christina MacDonnell).
Catherine McCuaig Apr 28,1847-Apr 8, 1935/daughter of DONALD McCUAIG

I am interested in my gg-grand mother and her family.
She was born Catherine McCuaig on April 28, 1847 in the village of Dunvegan, Glengarry, Ontario, Canada. Her parents were: Donald McCuaig and Sara Dewar. She married Martin McNamara on Nov 1, 1866 in Vankleek Hill, Ontario, Canada and had they had 8 children. Eventually, she moved to the States. Beyond Catherines parents, I don't know much of her family. I believe she may have 10 siblings: Catherine, John, Donald, Isabella, John, Christy, William, Duncan, Flora, Margret. Is there anyone who maybe connected to this family who can tell me alittle about them or confirm that the above people are indeed my gg-grandmothers family?
There are so many McCuaigs I could really use help from some who is affliated with this particular McCuaig family. Thanks!

MacDonell/MacDonald Roots

Hello,
This is my first time posting to a website like this so please bear with me.

My name is Linda MacDonald and I am searching for information about my Glengarry County ancestors. This is all the information I have:
(note: the spelling of MacDonell/MacDonald is as it appears in the records I have obtained)

My great grandparents ALLAN MACDONELL and CATHERINE MACDONALD were married in St. Raphael’s Church on Oct.11, 1881.
He was the son of the late Allan(?) and Mary MacDonald, lot 24, 8th Charlottenburgh. She was the daughter of John MacDonald and Ann MacDonald, lot 20, 1st Kenyon. Present were Alex. MacDonald and Annie MacDonell.

They had 3 children:
Archibald Allan, baptised Oct.1, 1882; died March 5,1969; buried in St. Catherine’s cemetery, Greenfield (bachelor)

my grandfather JOHN ALEXANDER, born March 5, 1885; baptized March 25,1885; died May 9,1926; buried in St. Catherine’s cemetery, Greenfield.

and Mayme, born 1891; married James McBain; died 1926; buried in St. Catherine’s cemetery, Greenfield.

CATHERINE MACDONALD was buried August 31,1929 in St. Catherine’s cemetery, Greenfield. Present were Archibald Macdonald, James McBain, D.J. Cuthbert and R.A. MacDonald (priest). Her burial notice says “widow of the late Allan MacDonald, hotel keeper of village”.

ALLAN MACDONALD is also buried in St. Catherine's.

I know very little else about my great grandparents, except that Catherine had 2 brothers, Alexander and Hugh and 2 sisters, Flora and Annie Laurie. Annie Laurie (1872-1956) left Greenfield and married George Kennedy in Ashland, Wisconsin in 1901.

My grandfather left Glengarry for northern Ontario sometime before 1915 when he married my grandmother, Agnes Lea Miron.

I am especially interested in finding out when and from where in Scotland my ancestors emigrated, but any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Linda

Joseph , Daniel (killed on hwy #2 early 1900s. and Lawerance his brother whom died sometime in the 1960s in hospital of a chest infection. Then there was Philomene Chartrand who married Alisime Pierre Chartrand January 3 1859 at Williamstown ontario.
I have been doing some research on the Kennedy family in Glengarry Cty and have come across the marriage record of Angus Kennedy McPhee & Mary Ellen Lemon. In this record it states that prior to the marriage they received a "dispensation" from the Bishop. What I was wondering is: are these dispensation records kept at all and if so where would I find them?
Thank you
Bob

Margaret(Peggy) MacDonald dau of Angus Ban and Nellie was married to my ancestor Ranald MacDonald, son of Angus og mor and Christine MacDonald.

I would like to compare information on this family with researchers of Angus Ban and Nellie.

Margaret's sister Catherine was married to Farquar MacRae. In 1831 Randal and Margaret's daughter Mary (I have no info except marriage record) married Duncan MacRae. Duncan was the son of Christopher, son of John of Christopher and son of Mary MacRae. I know the name Christopher is prominent in the family of Farquar.
I'm wondering if Duncan's father is brother to Farquar. There must be a connection somewhere but have been unable to find it. Duncan was living at Lancaster 6, Lot 13 at time of marriage. Mary was at Lot 12. A check of '51 census shows a Donald MacRae (age 48) and family living there. I'm assuming that Donald was brother to Duncan. By that time Duncan and Mary were living in Roxbourgh. There is a baptism (convert) for Duncan 27 Dec 1839 stating that Duncan's brother (no name) was killed 24th Dec 1839.

Hoping a MacRae researcher can help prove or disaprove that Duncan is connected to Farquar somehow.

Requesting lookup of death/burial of Catherine MacDonald

Can any one help me find a record of the death/burial of Catherine MacDonald who died in Glengarry County after 1875 and before 1881? Born Catherine McKinnon, daughter of Archibald and Ann McKinnon, she married Allan MacDonald 26 September 1871 in St Raphael's Parish. She bore three children: John born abt 1872, Annie, born abt 1874 and Ranald born abt 1876. (Her daughter Annie married Sam MacLeod who died. In 1910, Annie married Angus MacDonald at Margaret's Parish.)

Catherine MacDonald is absent in the 1881 Census. Her husband Allan and their three children are living in Lancaster Twp, possibly at Lot 16 Con 7, with Allan's parents, Donald and Janet MacDonald. Can anyone track down her date of death? Are there any descendants out there?

Can you tell me if there is a section of the 1871 census that covers the exact location where a family lived? For 1901, I was able to find the con and lot number which was a big help. I'm trying to find out if a McMillan family was already living in con 4 lot 37 in 1871, Too bad the original images of the 1871 are not online. The index online only has the head of the family. I need more to confirm if the family I found is the right one.

Hello: I am trying to trace Dougald Cameron's ancestry. He m Catherine Laroque in St, Raphael's. He converted to Catholicism, but his parentage was probably Presbyterian in denomination. They had a son, Allan who migrated to Louisiana and his family went to Texas.

I am of the same DNA as he is shown to be and I long to find the parentage of 'my' Charles b. 1783. Anybody out there know about Dougald ? My DNA is the same as #29230, although a different line to Charles.
A great big thank you for any help.
Delphine.
Interested in the parents of Kenneth Urquhart and Margaret Urquhart who married each other prior to 1869. Children born were:
Tabitha Adelaide Urquhart Oct. 13, 1869 in Charlottenburgh
Amelia Ann Urquhart April 24, 1873 Charlottenburgh
Lennard Robert Urquhart Jan. 18, 1875 Charlottenburgh
Unnamed female Urquhart Sept. 26, 1876 in Glengarry

I have not found Kenneth and Margaret in the 1871 census, so I do not even know their ages/year of birth. There are three Kenneths as head of household in the 1871 Ontario index in Glengarry.

There is a death record for a Kenneth Urquhart who died March 19, 1876 age 43 in Glengarry. He was born in Kenyon Twp. I am wondering if this is the same Kenneth.

The children above are listen as Bertha A., Mary Ann, and Lenord Robert living in the John Sands household in the 1881 Charlottenburgh census. I am not finding Kenneth and Margaret.

In the 1900 US census, Tabitha is living with husband Rodney Finley, and Amelia A. is living with husband John Mays, both in Barron Co., Wisconsin. They say they immigrated in 1884.

He is buried at St. Alexander's but no parents listed for him. The family was living at Lochiel 6 Lot 8 at the time of his death. I'm trying to find parents names for him. Apparently death certificates at that time didn't include parents names. Are there any other records which might include them? He was born too early to be in St. Raphaels.
This is my first posting to this list.
I am interested to know if there are others that I can communicate with that are researching this MacDonell / MacDonald family.

Angus MacDonell and Annie ( Nancy ) Stewart
This couple had a family of 18 children. I believe all family members were born in Scotland and came to Glengarry County, Ontario  around 1830 and most of the children came with them. The children that I know of are 3 daughters referred to as;
Auntie, Alex Roy ( wife of Alex Roy MacDonald )
Auntie, Captain Grey
Auntie, Piper
some of the son's are;
Charles MacDonell, who married Mary Campbell ( daughter of John Campbell and Margaret McPhee )
Donald MacDonell, who was sent to Rome at the expense of the Bishop. He was ordained in Rome, died and buried in Rome.
Jim MacDonell of Athol
Black Jim MacDonell, father of Fr. Ranald MacDonell
George MacDonell, postmaster in Cornwall until his death in 1902
Ranald MacDonell
Donald MacDonell
John MacDonell, married Nancy McArthur ( daughter of Charles McArthur and Flora MacDonald )
Another son was studying for the priesthood and died en route to Canada and was buried at sea.
The other 6 sons are unknown but believed to be in Glengarry County, Ontario

The above information comes from an old family letter that was written in the early 1900's. The author of the letter was a great granddaughter of Charles MacDonell and Mary Campbell, who lived at Kenyon, Con. 2, lot 30.
Charles MacDonell's oldest daughter Margaret married Alexander MacTavish in 1860 and they lived at Kenyon, Con. 3, lot 27.

Another note in the family letter says that this MacDonell family were known as McRaghals.

I welcome all the help I can get at sorting out my MacDonell family.

Katherine

Relatives came over in 1815 on the Baltic Merchant. Angus MacDonald (Mac Ian Bhan) & Jean McDougall (his wife) with son Duncan. Angus was 34 and Jean was 24, Duncan 2, Anna, 6months. They came from Knoydart, Scotland, settled in Lochiel, Glengarry,Canada. His father John remained in Knoydart, INVERNESS, Inverness-Shire, Scotland. Is it possible to trace his family roots in Scotland. They are Catholic, which parish church would they have attended in Lochiel Glengarry area. I have the information from 1851,1881 Canadain Census on the family.

Home Children

My paternal great Aunt Ada Amelia Lesslie married Robert Yeates 15 March 1893 at Lancaster ON. The marriage registration indicates that Robert was 28, farmer, from Newdeer - Aberdeenshire Scotland. In researching my Lesslie ancestry (grandmother), I came across an item in the Archives Canada list of Immigrants to Canada under Home Children. It Lists a Robert Yeats age 18 departing Glasgow and arriving in Quebec in June 1883 as one of the Home Children. In the 1901 census for Lancaster it lists Robert "Yates" from Scotland and Ada with his date of immigration as 1882, in the 1911 census, they are now in Bedford QC, it shows 1884 and now back to "Yeats". His headstone and other documents are shown as Yeats. The coincidence in names and dates is such that I am curious as to Home Children in the Lancaster area in that time frame. Unfortunately Ada is not listed in the immigration lists, presumably as British Subjects did not have to register. Home Children did ? Before I borrow the 1891 census for Lancaster/Glengarry from Library Canada, I wonder if anyone on this site would have any knowledge of Home Children being assigned to this area and in particular of Robert Yeats (or other spelling) being listed with a family in the area. A long shot but an interesting one to follow and too much of a coincidence to ignore. Thanks for reading. Keith.

Trying to locate information on this person and his family of orgin. This is what we have:

John Dougal McDonald born 19 August 1890 in Dunvagan, Ontario, Canada (according to WWI enlistment he was born Kenyon Twp, Glengarry County, Ontario, Canada). John married Elizabeth Greenwood apx 1914 in Kenora, Ontario, Canada. They had 2 children. He died January 1963 in California, USA.

According to the WWI enlistment information he was Presbyterian and his trade/calling was as a Constable

The follwing information is from John's son Harry-
He said that John's father's name was Dougal, that his headstone spells the name MacDonald, that he was the one that came to Canada from Scotland.

He said that John had a full sister Anna Mary McDonald, and that John and Anna's mother died giving birth to John.

He said after John's mother died, John's father married one of his cousins and they had 3 children Joann, Gordie and Christina. Two of the 3 children were reported to be blind.

We do not have the names of his mother or his step-mother, nor do we know for sure the name of his father, just what Harry thinks it was.

John's son Harry is getting older and some of his memories aren't real clear, so use that information as a starting point, not absolute fact. :)

Any information on this line would be greatly appreciated.

Linda

Roderick was born around 1796, died at some point in the mid-late 1800's (1870 is my best guess right now). Frances was born 1801, died 1884 (supposedly - haven't been able to confirm this yet). They were married in Cornwall in 1818, and in the marriage record it states that Roderick lived in Williamstown, Charlottenburg Township. Any information on these two would be greatly appreciated.

Many of their offspring moved to Syndeham, Grey County in the mid 1800s following the lumber trade.

I'm hoping there are ancestors of John Cameron of Clunes and Alexander Cameron of Glen Nevis and Glen Moriston who'd be interested in taking a DNA test.

My branch's results are:
393:13; 390:24; 19:14; 391:11; 385a:11; 385b:14; 426:12; 388:12; 439:15; 389-1:14; 392:13; 389-2:30

The DNA test requires a direct male ancestor and the information about it is at http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=X79916&a...

Kim

I am looking for any information on Mary MacDonald and her lineage. Mary was my ggg-grandmother. Mary was married to John Archibald Ban MacDonald (Born circa 1800)and the mother of Allan J. MacDonald "The Wheelright". There is a partial transcription of her obituary but unfortunately some words are missing as well as the date of death. It indicates that she "was the daughter of J-----McDonald of the "Point" in the front Charlottenburg. Both her father and grandfather, R-nald (?) McDonald, were United Empire Loyalists, and settled on the Point, at the mouth of the Riviere Baisin." Further on in the obituary it states "Her father took an active part in the American revolution, and died in 1825. He was a native of ARnabis, Scotland."
If anyone has any information it would be most appreciated.
Sheila MacDonald
