Good day to you,

Thanks ever so much for your offer of finding out the information about my Goderich kin. Do you live in the area?
We lost contact with most of our Canadian relatives after my father's death in 1971. My Aunt Sarah came to the Buffalo, N.Y. area for his funeral and I know that she and my Uncle Jim were still alive at the time of our marriage in June of 1974.
Looking forward to hearing from you again.

Best regards,

SueDee

Am looking for descendants of Alexander and Samuel Brown. They appear on the 1901 Census in Huron South. They are both farmers with an address of Clinton Ontario. Alexander is listed living with a sister Lucy and his brother Samuel has a wife named Emma C. and children named Lyall and Mabel. There are 2 young men last name of Ford listed (one with each family). They are my grandfather and great uncle. I am very grateful for what they did for them. I would love to hear from anyone with a connection to these 2 men. Hoping there may be pictures taken at the time. Thank you for your time. Regards -- Margaret Ford Campbell

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I have indeed found information since I posted this, but it doesn't agree with what you have here. It's quite possible I've mixed up the families though as you've mentioned.

What I have is a John and Grace Thompson in the 1901 Huron Township, Bruce County South, Ontario census page 10 with children Donald b 1877 (age 23), James b 1882 (age 18), Edith b 1886 (age 14) and John N b 1892 (age 9).

I also have John and Grace Thompson in the 1891 Huron Township, Bruce County West, Ontario census page 43 with Archy age 15, Daniel (Donald?) age 12, Kelty (Catherine?) age 10, James age 8 and Janet age 4.

Since it's the same township it would seem they're the same family but there are discrepancies. Grace's age is 36 in 1891 and 47 in 1901 which works well but John is 40 in 1891 and 61 in 1901 which doesn't track. Also the children's names don't track perfectly, with Edith in 1901 but Janet in 1891; Daniel/Donald may be enumerator error; Kelty may be a short form of Catherine.

I also have John and Grace in the 1881 Huron Township, Bruce County South, Ontario census page 69. John's age is listed there as 40, which agrees with the 1901 census. Grace's age is 28, which is close but not exactly the same as the other two censuses. It has Archibald, age 5, David (Donald?) age 3, and Catherine age 8 months. This seems to track well enough to be the same family.

I also have a John Thompson, age 30, in the household of Thomas and Jane Yeman in the 1871 Huron Township, Bruce County South, Ontario page 11. This fits with the age of their first child, Archibald, in 1876 and a marriage record I found for John Thomson and Grace Mcmillan in Erin, Wellington County, Ontario on 14 Jan 1875.

Grace's parents are listed on the marriage record as Donald M Mcmillan and Catherine Mcmillan. I have an 1871 census in Erin, Wellington County, Ontario, page 55, for Donald and Catherine which includes Grace, age 18, in the list of children. That age matches the 1881 census.

I have George Thomas Scott in the 1871 Huron Township, Bruce County South, Ontario census page 32. He is 1 1/2 years old, in his parent's household. Same township, same county. I have a scanned copy of the marriage license for George and Edith, in Brussels, Huron County, Ontario dated Nov 30 1911. This was supplied by my sister-in-law Cathy. Both George and Edith are listed as living in Huron Township, Bruce County, Ontario on the license. No parents are listed, but Edith would have been 25 and George would have been 42 so no parents would have been required for them to be married.

Did you look at this one and decide it wasn't as good a match as the one you listed? Can you give me census page information so I can look at those records for Jeremiah and Caroline? I don't see a Jeremiah Thompson in the 1871 Bruce County (north or south) censuses..

Hi Rod,
I have been doing research on the Mary Edith Thompson side of subject people, primarily starting several generations back with Levi Thompson and Margaret A. Martin. I don't know if I'm related but I have been trying to find the family of my g-grandmother, Eliza Thompson b. abt 1867 in Ontario. Other than who she married, Hugh McMillan from Ont., that is about all we know about her early life. So, I have been going through the process of elimination. Levi and Margaret Thompson are shown in the 1911 with a daughter (or maybe niece) named Elizabeth Thompson born 1867 that I'm interested in. In doing this I collected some information on George Scott and Mary Edith Thompson that might be of interest to you???? I can't vouch for the accuracy (there are several George and Mary or Edith Thompsons that are close fits) but I think it is pretty good. Maybe you have already gathered some information on these since the last post on this subject.

I'm not going to put all the information I have gathered in this post (too lengthy) but below is a brief family tree starting with Mary Edith's father and mother, Jeremiah Mulford Thompson and Caroline Amelia Haines. If any of these people are of interest to you, please let me know and I can add detail either on Rootsweb or via my email.

Dan Harvey
Snohomish, Washington State
email: djjr7744@comcast.net

Family Tree:
Jeremiah Mulford Thompson b. 1847 and Caroline Amelia Haines b. 1846.
to find Doris obit I just typed in her name on google , played around for a while and found what you wanted . was not so lucky with Lewis but I did find his death date. he died Feb 4 2008. There are many obits available for Dutot's in the Lemington area online. Now you have the date ask on this site if someone can get a copy from the library in Clinton or call the funeral director that handled Doris's arrangement , they may have taken care of Lewis also. good luck with your search

I would be interested if there are any write up for Mitchell family's. The family's would be John Mitchell and Elizabeth Ware, or his brother William Mitchell and Ann Dyment, and my gggrandfather Thomas Mitchell and Eleanor Jones. I know there were a lot more from that area but They were the first Mitchell that moved from England to Canada that are on my tree they would date about mid 1800's

Ashfield or Goderich Twp./ town - McDonald - McPherson marriage church record

I am searching for a church marriage record, likely Presbyterian or Anglican or Methodist if Presbyterian not available to the young couple, in 1857 or perhaps even 1856, between Alexander McDonald and Elizabeth (Betsy), likely surnamed McPherson. Also if possible the baptism of their firstborn, my great-great-grandmother Mary Ann (Mae) McDonald on 7 August 1858 (acc. to a family bible). Can anyone help or guide me on this one? I've searched online a few years ago, with no success. Especially of interest would be Betsy's parents, who are unknown. Her 1861 Ashfield Twp. census entry says she was born in Cape Breton in the early 1830s. Alexander's parents were Duncan McDonald and Anna McPherson.

Ulanski, this database is based on only 5 of the 15 years of existing records. I found my great great grandfather's death mentioned in the priest's notes -- he was Morgan Burns.

Dear Gloria:
Sorry for the delay but I just received the notice of your reply yesterday. I have Bowlers in my family also, from Glenderry, Ballyheigue, County Kerry. These Bowlers originated in Dingle, County Kerry. Maurice Dalton married Jane McKenna who a sister of my great grandmother Julia Ann McKenna Garvey. So I am looking for Garvey/McKenna/Flinn/Flynn/Sullivan/Dalton. I would really like to find out more about the McKennas. Thanks for your reply and if you come across any of the above names in the book would you kindly let me know.
Thank you again.
Kathy O'Leary/born and raise in Chicago, IL

Dear Paul: I'm sorry but I don't know these names. I would be very surprised to learn that they are not related but as of right now I don't know how they could be. Since families often travelled together I would guess they could be relatives of my Andrew Garvey. Just don't know at this time.
Thanks for writing.
Kathy

Hi Donna and Kathy,

Maybe this info may help. Or just muddy up the water..I have a family that I have been trying to track from the 1861 census. All the families on this page were working as railroad labor and living in Goderich by the lake.

I am working on the Power family, but there is a family of "Garvey's" with chidren that are mixed up with the Power children. The Garvey is very, very hard to read. I could even go so far as to as it might be Greevey. Lots of corrections on the page. As if the census taker had trouble figuring out who belonged to who. So I suspect there is more than a casual relationship between these families. Maybe they shared a log "Shanty"

I know this Power family later had a group that relocated to Chicago, from Ohio. This family is some how connected to the Daly's in Goderich and later Chicago. Also a lot of Griffin's on the same page.

The family is

Micheal Garvey 40 Ireland
Margiet(?) Garvey 40 Ireland
Mary Garvey 5 Ireland
John Garvey 4 Ireland
Micheal Garvey 3 Upper Canada

All born Ireland. (St Patrick's Ward, Goderich 1861 Census)

Does this fit any of your data?

Paul Powers
Dear Donna:
No, I don't know why the e was dropped. I am in touch with Vince Garvy who is a great grandson of John Garvy, brother of my great grandmother. It seems like many of the male Garveys dropped the e after they came to Chicago. I know that Vince was surprised when I told him the original name spelling was Garvey.

I don't know about an E. Garvy. I do know that there is a John Garvy school on the northside of Chicago named after the brother of my great grandmother. John served on the Chicago Board of Education and was prominent in Chicago. Many of his descendants were also quite prominent. You can find many mentions of them in the Chicago Tribune. (obituaries, society notices, etc.)

Are you related to the Garvey family? My great grandmother was Mary Ann Garvey who married Edward Flynn/Flinn.

Kathy

Dear John:
I have tons of information. I am a great granddaughter of one of John Garvey's sisters. Mary Ann Garvey Flynn was my great grandmother. I am in touch with two of John Garvey's great grandsons. The name was changed to Garvy here in Chicago by a couple of John Garvey's sons.
I have a picture of Mary Ann McClean, widow of John Garvey.
There are dozens of descendants of John and Mary Ann.
Are you in touch with Grant Ferguson in Huron County.
He is distinctly related to Mary Ann McClean.
I am at work and I don't have all the information here.
But quickly...John Garvey died in 1895 here in Chicago. He was here in 1871 and probably earlier since he became a citizen in 1868. He named one son after Father Arnold Damen of Holy Family Church fame. This church survived the Chicago fire. His son became a Jesuit priest. Another son became a doctor. The family seemed to have done quite well in this country. In fact, there is a school (elementary) in Chicago named after John Garvey.
So glad to hear from someone else who is working in Goderich. Do you have any Dalton connections? McKenna or Sullivan connections?
Thanks for writing.
Kathy O'Leary

My grandmother Mary Anne Mclean was baptized at St. Joseph's Church, Kingsbridge. Her parents and some siblings and their offsprings farmed in Ashfield Twp.
One descendant of one of her siblings was Ann Mclean who married John Garvey. They also farmed in Ashfield on property bordering Lake Huron.

Do you have any info on this John Garvey's birth, marriage, death and or the children of John and Ann?

Thanks
John
