Does anyone recognize this family? Thomas Gillespie, born c. 1806, Pennsylvania, died 03 May 1884, Dresden; his wife was Caroline Crandall, born c. 1819, Delaware Twp., Middlesex Co., UC, died 13 Feb 1894, also in Dresden.
1851 Census, Thomas is in Dawn Township, Lambton County; I have seen only the agricultural schedule; does anyone know if the personal enumeration for Lambton exists?
1861 Census, Thomas is in Camden Township, Kent Co., with wife and sons
1871 Census, Also in Camden Township, with wife and sons;
1881 Census, Dresden, where he is a merchant, with wife, and son Benson who is also a merchant.
John W. Gillespie, born c. 1843 CW, died 06 Apr 1902 Dresden
Benson, born c. 1853 CW, died 21 Feb 1914, Dresden, buried Dresden
Phylander, born 02 Nov 1858 CW, died 03 Oct 1915, Highland Park, Wayne Co., Michigan
There also may be another son, James, b. c1842 CW who appears in Camden Twp. in the 1871 census; he is not living with Thomas and Caroline.
I notice the gap between John and Benson, and wonder if there were two marriages, Caroline being the mother of the younger boys; or perhaps there were other children who died.
Elizabeth Gillespie, born c1844, Michigan, married William Carroll of Dresden about 1849; they are near neighbors to James Gillespie in 1871, who is living with William's uncle David Kelley.
Is she another child of the family; if so, why the anomaly of her Michigan birthplace which is consistent throughout her life? She and William Carroll went to the U.S. about 1872.
These folks are consistently Methodist.
Am trying to find out more about this family, and Elizabeth in particular. The spelling of the surname varies with the inconsistent spelling of the times.
Thank you for your consideration.
