Hi Julie, I believe the 1810 refers to the year that the family settled on the farm in Bathurst Twp on Con 4 Lot 9.
I looked up my ancestors in the 1842 Census and it shows 1822. I know they were given the farm lot in summer of 1821 but may not have built a cabin to live in till the following year.
Re Concession, the Counties were subdivided into townships, the townships were subdivided into concessions and 200 acre lots and then the 200 acre lots were divided into East and West halves of 100 Acres each. Each early settler was given either 100 acres or 200 acres depending on family size and or military rank. My G..Grandfather received 200 acre lot but his sons only receive 100 acres each. In Bathurst Twp. the farm lots are bounded on the South and North by a 66 ft twp road allowance and this was called the concession road. Some locals also referred to these roads as lines, eg 2nd Concession or 2nd Line was the same road. In the case of Samuel Dowdall family they lived on the North side of Bathurst Concession Road 4 on Lot # 9. To see an 1850s map of Bathurst Twp go to following link:

If you want to see where the farm was in today's maps, go to Google Maps and type in Perth on,ca then go to the west of Perth (left on map) until you find County Rd #6 Christie Lake Road, follow that to the west until Cameron SDRD, follow Cameron RD north towards TransCanada Hwy 7 and you will see 4th Conc road. The Dowdalls lived on the north side (Hwy 7 side) of 4th Conc road between Cameron Rd and Elliot Rd.
