Hi,

John and Catherine Turriff relocated to Dungannon Township in March of 1877 with my great grandparents John & Jeanie Wood. The families were neighbours in Lanark and decided to homestead as neighbours in Dungannon Township. My grandfather said it was the abundance of game and the easier homesteading proving that drew the families to the area. The government was giving the land grants readily at the time because the northern mining was starting to take hold and it was an advantage to populate an area where the economy was going to grow. Turriff settlement was provided with a post office and rail access (basically a mail drop/pickup). The post office was run by my family until 1922.
