Daniel, here is the part about William and Elijah Tryon, hope I can make some sense of it all for you...
In the family of William Tryon who died 1834 and his wife Polly Brown I currently have names of 8 children.
Two of their sons I have as separate individuals: William and Elijah. But could they have been the same man?
William Tryon your ancestor was born about 1829, died 1900, married to Eleanor Walker possibly about 1858. I only have names of two children for them, Agnes and James (your ancestor) born about 1859 and 1863.
I have recorded as a separate man altogether, Elijah Tryon born about 1825-1830 married to Annice (Abigail?) Martindale possibly between 1846 and 1851- I have names of (five) children for them, with one of those five children being the same person as one of the other four.
Son Sager Tryon born 1852, died 1895, married twice, Charlotte Snook and Margaret Walsh, seven known children from 2 marriages
Daughter ELIZA Tryon, born about 1851-1852, died 1927, married Benjamin Shewman, no known children
Calista Ann Tryon, 1854-1919, married Peter Hicks and James Johnston, ten children from 2 marriages
Melissa (?) Tryon born about 1855 is same daughter as either CALISTA or Eliza, no further info on a Melissa in this family; she appears in Foster household on 1861 census in Camden East with her brother Sager:
1861 Camden East:
James Foster age 30 says married
Elizabeth Foster age 59 says married, surely they aren't man and wife with that age spread?
Nancy Foster age 25
Phebe Foster age 22
Sagar Tryon age 8
Melicia Tryon age 6 (is this Eliza or is it Calista Ann?)
and William Elijah Tryon 1858-1915 who was married twice, first to Zoe Thibodeau, second to Nancy Mounteney, 14 known children with Nancy.
Death record for Sager does not give name of father.
Death record for Eliza says father Elijah Tryon, mother Annis Warner (Annice had re-married to Simon warner)
Death record for Calista says father WILLIAM Tryon, mother Annie Martindale.
Death record for William Elijah says father Elijah Tryon, mother Annice Martindale.
So what I keep wondering...were William and Elijah the same man? Did your William marry Eleanor Walker after leaving Annice Martindale?
There is a William Tryon on the 1851 census at Camden East, single, so I have assumed that is your William. And 1851 Portland does have Elijah:
Elijah TRYON (spelled as Trian) age 26
Abigail age 17 (born about 1834)
Eliza age 1 year
Mariah CARD age 18
IF Elijah are William are NOT the same man, then Elijah must have died between 1857 and 1867 when Annice/Abigail re-married to Simon Warner. I cannot find an Elijah in 1861. Your William and Ellener are in 1861 Camden East with daughter Agnes and a Charles Walker that I assume is Ellener's brother (that reminds me, can you write to me off this board about this WALKER family) and a girl named Martha Roach (who was she?)
It is Calista's death record that makes me wonder.
And also....this is important for the TRYON records for this family:
I THINK that Ancestry.com has mis-transcribed some records; according to Elizabeth Hancocks' early marriages for Hastings County, Hannah Yeomans married Samuel Rogers on Aug. 30, 1867; Simon Warner married Annis on Aug. 28, 1867. Here is what is says in her book:
Her page 96 of County Marriage registers of Ontario, Canada 1858-1869, Volume 5, Hastings County:
(Compiled and edited by Elizabeth Hancocks, C.G., in year 1980)
Warner, Simon age 38, living at Richmond, born at Kingston, son of John and Elizabeth, married on 28th August 1867, Annis Tryon, age 36, living at Richmond, born at CE (?) (Camden East?) daughter of Martin and Dorotha.
Here is what is posted by Ancestry.com and it is wrong:
