This mentions the will of Henry Smith in which he names a wife, Catherine, and a son, John Henry Smith. The will states that “George Haines is to support and maintain Henry’s wife, Catharine, and daughter, Frances" but, in 1861, George Haynes was with Ann Smith (45), so Catharine and Ann seem to be the same person. This indicates that Nicholas was promoted from Ensign to Lieutenant in the militia in 1806. Apparently he resigned his commission 12MAR1813.
