I am a grandson of George Henry Bassingthwaighte (Jonathan's son) who emmigrated to Cavalier County, North Dakota in 1887 and am researching family roots especially as regarding George Henry's move to North Dakota.

I have over 2,000 names in my Bassingthwaighte Family Tree Maker files and that is only the Canadian Branch. I welcome any dialog with family members on the internet.

I have been to Archiva Net, and it is not very helpful for onsite research, as I am in AB and cannot access these archives in person...
Any help would be much appreciated, willing to share anything I have on these names: Whitney, Roszell, Skippen, Stringer, Garland and Anderson.

Regards,
Shelley Whitney Giles

I have a photograph of 5 young women, probably taken in the late 1890s or early 1900s by the photographer above.

The only link that I know of so far is that my Great Grandmother Cadotte lived in Honora Bay. I had assumed that she lived there alone with her husband, so who the women are I don't know

I inherited a mass of photos that were identified and have spent quite some time trying to organize them.

I will scan them in and send to anyone who might want to take a stab at identififying them.

Gail Darby

She was the daughter of the late Peter and Mary Louise (Corbiere) Madahbee. Veronica was a member of the Anglican Church, and a member of the Elders Club and a past member of the Little Current Legion, Branch 177. She had many hobbies, including beadwork, crafts and puzzles, but her favourite pastime was bingo, and searching out yard sales. She was a true yard sale fanatic. However, Veronica's greatest joy was her family. She was a kind and loving and loved lady who will be remembered with many happy memories. She was known by all as 'Grandma.'
Her husband Stanley McGraw predeceased February 25, 1979. Dear and loving mother of Betty and Harry Saelens of Tillsonburg, Gladys King, friend Harry; Joan (husband Bob predeceased) Cranney; Ervin and Norma McGraw, Gordon McGraw, Fred and Karen McGraw, Kathy (Cookie) and Roland Bebamash, Beverly Wilson, Audrey and Clyde Bone, and Vern and Shawna McGraw all of Sucker Creek, and two special 'sons' Robert and his wife Jenny and Victor. Predeceased by daughter Georgina. Proud grandmother of 25 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Dear sister of Jean, Annie, Ivan, Lillian, Barb, Cecile, Eli, Archie, Linda, Patsy and Tootsie.
Predeceased by sisters Elizabeth and Doris and brothers Lawrence and Morris.
The funeral service was conducted at the Sucker Creek Community Hall on Saturday, July 22 with Reverend Richard White officiating. Interment in Holy Trinity Anglican Cemetery. In remembrance, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Ojibwe Cultural Foundation would be appreciated.
Arrangements entrusted to Culgin Funeral Home, Gore Bay
Manitoulin Expositor, July 26, 2000
Recently tried to contact a B. Breadner who is researching the same Ritchies but the email bounced back!

I am researching John RITCHIE from Bobcaygeon, Ontario. John married Mary McCullough and had Sarah who married Hugh Alexander Anderson. Sarah was born in the Madrid/Waddington area of upper New York State. John's parents were James and Elizabeth. He also had brothers - James, Alexander and David Ritchie, and a sister Sarah who married a Henderson. They all left NewYork state in around 1857 or so to settle in the Galway Township and Bobcaygeon. John was a great gardener!

One of John Ritchie's son was William David who went to Little Current after marrying Matilda Johnson. His other son went to Blind River.

Any information on the Ritchie's would be greatly appreciated or if you know of the new email address for this member, please let me know!

Robert James Green, b abt 1943. d abt 1970 Manitoulin, Toronto, Ontario

Robert James Green died in a car accident. (see below)
If I am following the correct trail, then I am the daughter of Robert James Green. I was born in Toronto in 1964. I was adopted to a great family. The living relatives of Robert Green, may or may not know that I exist. I do not know if his family is from the Manitoulin area, Northern Ontario, or Toronto. So I posted here.

My birth mothers last name is Mowat. I have met her and know all about that side of my family. Her family has a history in Northern Ontario, and Perry Sound area.

More Info:
March 30, 1970 Toronto Star, News pg 34: Robert Green 27, of Toronto, died in a two car crash two miles south of the Manitoulin Island community of Manitowaning.

more info:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~onmanito/bites1960.html
Despite improved roads, safer cars and more stringent laws, the late 1960s saw the worst accidents on the Island that ever occurred. Over 20 were killed and more injured on Manitoulin roads in that half-decade. Several involved more than one fatality. At the end of July 1966 two youths were killed when the car in which they were passengers rolled near Manitowaning. Two more were killed in a traffic accident at West Bay in December of the next year and in the fall of 1969 a mother and young child were struck and fatally injured in Providence Bay. The carnage continued the following March when two members of a Sheshegwaning family were killed when their car collided head on with a pop truck on Highway 540 about 10 miles from Little Current.

Near the end of March 1970 nine young people, most of them teenagers, died when two vehicles crashed head on a couple of miles south of Manitowaning on Highway 68. (Robert Green was one of them)

At the time it was the second worst traffic accident in Canada, the worst having occurred on Highway 17 west of Espanola in July 1967 when 10 were killed.

My grandparents, Matthew GRIFFITH and Florence HADLEY were married in July 1905 in Gore Bay. They were married from the home of Dr. Johnston with whose family my grandmother was living. They treated her very well; in fact, they sent the wedding invitations. The only address on the invitation was "The Maples" Does anyone have any information about either the family or the home? My grandmother was one of the British Home Children, and it is nice to know that she found a family here that treated her like one of their own.
I would appreciate any information. Thank you.

My great great grandmother Mary Ann Parisien(Restoule) was born around 1813 St. Joseph's Island, Ontario. Her parents were Jacques Parisien and Marguerite Laframboise born at Lecloche, Manitoulin Island. On one of her children's record her name was (Momey) but the other documents say Parisien. Confusion. Any help with my family lines would be appreciated. I would like to hear from others who share this lineage. Her daughter Elizabeth Restoule Lavallee Frechette was born April 1841 at French River, Ontario. I believe she was the oldest child. The others were baptized at St. Ann's Penetanguishene, Ontario.
I have not found Elizabeth's baptismal.

Looking for the parents of this couple. According to the 1881 Canada census for Muskoka Co, Ontario, Catherine was born about 1833 in Ontario and was of french descent. She is listed with her children but not her husband Alexander McKay. Their children were Edouard, Alexander, John, James, William, Elizabeth (my great grandmother), Agnes, and David. At least 2 children were born in Penetanguishene, Simcoe Co, Ont and some of the children were married in Byng Inlet, Parry Sound Co, Ont. Most records for the children were found in parish records of Wikwemikong Mission on Manitoulin Island (there was a "travelling" Jesuit there), but I haven't been able to find the marriage of Catherine and Alexander. Any help greatly appreciated!!!

I am looking for information on the Prior family that lived around North Bay. My father, James Bell, and my Uncle, R Bell, both spoke often of visiting these cousins. Frederick Prior married Ellen Milne in England and they had at least four children - Fred and Nellie are the ones my uncle remembers best - these visits would have been in the 1920s and thirties. Unfortunately, my father and his brother didn't pay alot of attention to proper names or relationships so my material is scanty. What I have is at

http://www.tribalpages.com/tribes?userid=cranberry

Any help would be appreciated. I would like to find the family information to share with my uncle who turned 89 recently.

Am just back from Manitoulin Island and all is well there. Libraries are pleased with the new system of the Island Pioneers database on a CD. The Trade Fair was hugh and Manitoulin Genealogy Club had an excellent display of old photos and lots of interest in them. Sunday evening I attended, Salem Missionary Church as they had an wonderful Slide Show of Spring Bay Pioneers - even had photos of Benjamin Bock and Ebenezer Tracy

Louise Corbiere Ojibwe Manitoulin Ontario Canada

I am doing research on the Corbiere surname on the Manitoulin Island Ontario Canada

Only verbally was the maiden name for my Great Grandmother Louise known, and it was misconstrued. Little was known about my ggrandmother Louise : she came from Canada, she was born in 1892, she may have had a brother who was a mounty, she was indian and french, she may have been previously married and have had another family. She met my Great Grandfather Jack Buynar and they had a daughter Esther (my grandmother) in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1928. After she was born they moved to Miami Florida and had 3 more children Alfred, Joseph and Estelle. Then unfortunately Louise died of cancer in Jan 1938 and on her death certificate it states she was born in Excelsior Canada. She is buried in Miami with no grave marker. We have found her grave site and she is buried in a section of the cemetery reserved for people of color (at that period in time even cemeteries were segregated).

I am sure I have found Louise in the 1901 Canadian Cesus, West Bay Indian Reserve, Billings, Ontario, parents Louis & Esther Corbiere. When I found this information it blew me away, because my grandmothers name is Esther, so Louise named her first born daughter after her mother and for certain she is Native American.

I have found out that Excelsior is a post office location on Manitoulin and wonder why it was used as her birth place on her death certificate

I would like to find some more information about the Ojibwe and the reservations of the Manitoulin Island.

Blessings,
Geri
www.gerisgenes.com

Hello,

I am currently working on my grandmother's family tree. I did find a marriage annoucment for a Cecile Lamoreaux to a Earnest Miron. The annoucement stated that the parents of the Bride were Alex Moses and Mad. Wassegijig. They married on 26 November 1918 in Little Current.

I unfortunately do not know which way to go, and have not been able to find any more information regarding Cecile Lamoreaux's parents. I am desperately trying to get information from my family, but to no avail.

Since I am not familar with Counties, Indian Reservations and such, I am sure that this is hindering me a alot. I do know that My Grandmother has 1/2 Ottawa Indian in her and that she was registered at one time. I haven't been able to glean anything from my mother regarding that as well.

If someone could point me in the right direction on this, it would greatly be appriciated.

I am tracing the MCCleary family in the area of Corcreany/Lurgan, Ireland where father Andrew McCleary came from. Does anyone know of these families?

Mr. Tracy should be contacted privately and hopefully a resolution can be found that will protect the privacy of the living, and the MFT database will be the excellent genealogical tool for finding ancestors that it was, I am sure, meant to be.
Lets move on folks.

Lynn G.
Manitoulin Board Admin

Paul Golding Obituary

PAUL GOLDING
Sadly Paul left his family on Thursday, December 13, 2001. Beloved husband of Robin of Thamesford. Loving father of Todd and his wife Diane of Stow, Ohio and Nicole and friend Brad and cherished grandson Mason all of Otterville. Survived by a brother David and his wife Sally of Monterrey, Mexico and 2 sisters Marilyn and her husband Hugh of Manitowaning and Helen and her husband Ian of Arnprior. Sadly missed by many nieces and nephews.
Paul was raised in Thamesford and on Manitoulin Island at their summer camp and had many wonderful memories of those years. He married his best friend in 1962, and they settled in Thamesford. Paul was very involved in the community, serving as village Trustee, Hydro Commissioner and coach and was a life member of the Lions Club, always lending a helping hand. Paul retired after 30 years at Bell Canada and drove a school bus and truly enjoyed each child. He was well known for the odd prank and being somewhat of a klutz at times.
He spread his humour and happiness throughout his life. Paul's happiest times were spent at their summer residence on Manitoulin Island and his ultimate joy was his boats, fishing poles and famous fish stories. Paul cared deeply for his family and the many people he met over the years, which resulted in many lasting friendships.
A celebration of Paul's life took place at the Harland B. Betzner Funeral Home in Thamesford on Sunday, December 16, 2001 with Reverend Roger McCombe officiating. Cremation. As an expression of sympathy
memorial donations may be given to the Lake Manitou Fishing Association.
"Those we love don't go away,
They walk beside us every day,
Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Loved, missed, forever dear."
Arrangements entrusted to Harland B. Betzner Funeral Home, Thamesford, Ontario.
Manitoulin Expositor, December 19, 2001

(Please do not contact me as I have no connection to this family.
