Hi,
I recently read two interesting petitions:
-- John Smith, Jr. of Gainsborough (petition S63)
-- David Smith of Gainsborough (petition S64)
(Upper Canada Land Petitions "S" Bundle 6, 1802-1804)
Both petitions were dated January 1804.
Both men said they were sons of John Smith (deceased) who had fought with the "Jersey Volunteers during the late American War." And John Smith Jr. said he also served in the Jersey Volunteers.
The petitions of both men were denied because their father had not been entered on the UE List.
When the petitions were made, John Smith Jr. had a wife and six children. David Smith had a wife and five children.
Does anyone know anything about this Smith family? Did they stay in Gainsborough? I found a David Smith b. 1775 in Gainsborough (buried in St. Ann's cemetery) but I wasn't sure if he was connected to this family.
