Can anyone help me find some information on Charles Burnham.

He was born about 1816, probably in Ontario. He shows up in Illinois with his wife (Mary) and children in 1861 but is back in Ontario (widowed) in 1881. Last known to be living in Cannington, Ontario with his son Albert in 1891. He does not show up on the 1901 census, and Albert is living in Toronto.

Hopefully somewhere out there is his obituary.
Thank you in advance

After a visit to the Uxbridge-Scott Museum, recently, I had concluded that they belonged to my husband's Charles WALTER'S family tree & that Charles Jr. was a brother of my husband's g. grandfather, William WALTERS, who married Mary Almira HILBORN in 1869 in York Co. & later moved to Tay Twp., Simcoe Co.

Thank you for any info that will help us to identify or eliminate Charles, as a connection of ours.

Libby H.
North York, Ont.

She is listed as a widow in 1881, and I would like to knoow what happened to her husband John, as well as her children. Two of the latter took homesteads in Eastern Saskatchewan about 1898, but I cannot trace the others, nor do I know exactly where this couple were born, married, or died. Family lore says the ones who came to Saskatchewan came from Uxbridge. One lived at Marsh Hill (probably John Thomas or Thomas John, father of Walter Byron Chase)

Have been unable to find any information on Eliza Runion, who, according to her death cert. of 1918 from British Columbia, was born 30 Dec 1822 in Ontario. I know she married William Marriott, (who died in 1874 in Lucan,Ont.) in about 1837, and have been told that took place in New York, but no one can come up with any documentation. Have searched all the records I could find (at the film library of LDS) for both her birth and marriage, but have found nothing. The records are very scimpy. They eventually moved to Stephen, Huron, Ontario, where my ggrandfather, David Marriot was born in 1859. Am also looking for any information as to when William (born 1804 in England) came to U.S. and where he came from in England. There were soooo many William Marriotts. Help would be appreciated.

Hello, I am looking for any assistance in locating information on Donald Arthur MacIsaac. He was married to Diane Morrison in the 1950's and had two daughters Dawn in April of 1958 and Tracey in January of 1964. He worked in the steel mills and moved to California for a time in 1968. I know he had brothers, one in particular was a John MacIsaac. I believe John went to prison for a bank robbery in 1964 in Hamilton. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I am interested in John H. Reynolds and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Lewis (of Whitby) who came to the village of Sunderland between 1872 and 1877. Their children all married local families: St. John, Robinson, Richardson, Kay, Thomas and Hogg. I found them in the Sunderland cemetery transcriptions and have a few obits, but would be interested in talking to someone who knows more about these families.

Russ McGillivray
Caledon, Ontario

Oh where, oh where can their marriage records be? They were married in 1872 - and I have searched everywhere for the record but cannot find it anywhere. Some kind folks have forwarded two Margaret Oliver marriage records to me, but one was 1873 and the other was much later. They are buried in Pinedale but the United Church tells me they have no records of Louis' and Margaret's union. Was there a fire, does anyone know, that would have destroyed the records around that time? I have been all through the tapes at the Archives, too.

If anyone can help I would be truly appreciative. By the way, I can do marriage lookups. I bought The Marriage Registers of Upper Canada/Canada Wes:
Home District 1835-1843
Home District 1808 - 1836
Home District 1848 - 1857
Newcastle District 1810 - 1848
Victoria District 1839 - 1858
Colborne District 1841 - 1857
Home District 1843 - 1849
Newcastle District 1848 - 1855
Prince Edward District 1833 0 1849

Let me know who you are looking for and I'll see if I have the record.

Cheers
Marilyn

Looking for birthplaces for Alexander Balmer (ca.1801-1862) and his wife Elizabeth Armstrong (ca.1799 -1857).They farmed in East Whitby Twp. Census records say they were born in Scotland, but I have been unable to pinpoint a location. Alexander was killed in a buggy accident and there apparently was an inquest. Would records still exist of this inquest?
Betty

I am looking for information on Samuel Hele and his wife Sarah and their descendants. They were born in England and immigrated to Canada between 1866 and 1873. They had a least two children born to them at the time of their arrival. The children's names were Samuel Warwick Hele, born 1866 and Sarah Jane Hele born, 1859.
Sarah (also known as Jane or Jennie ) married James Gilbert Northey in 1879 and had nine children. They lived in the Oshawa, Ontario.
It is unknown to me who Samuel Warwick married. Although I believed he lived in the Peterbourgh area and did have a family.
I have some info on Sarah and James and their family, but nothing for Samuel Warwick, his parents or any of the Hele family's death dates. I hope someone can help.
Barbara

Eva (as an infant) was adopted by Christopher Graham, Yeoman, of Brock Township.
I have no family connection, just curious. And also, maybe this may help someone researching that family...

My GG Grandfather was William Rowe (born 1836 in England) and his wife was Mary Elliott (also born 1836 in England. They emigrated to Canada from England in 1857. I am descended from his son Thomas Nathaniel Rowe born 1870 in Whitby Twp., Ontario County, Ontario. I only have personal knowledge of one of my G-Grandfathers brothers Alfred or Fred Rowe born 1869. I have only recently discovered that the family had been living in Pickering / Whitby area in the 1871 Census of Ontario County, Canada and as a result I have also discovered a number of siblings of my G-Grandfather Thomas Nathaniel Rowe. I am looking for the decendents of Sarah E. Rowe born @ 1857, Ema Jane Rowe born @ 1861, John H. Rowe born @ 1865, Charles Rowe born @ 1867 and Alfred or Fred Rowe born @ 1869. The older generation William Rowe and Mary Elliott were living with Fred and Thomas in Sprucedale, McMurrich Twp., Parry Sound District by 1901 however I don't know what happened to the others if they went north or stayed in Ontario County.

I am searching for information on John Todd and his wife Hannah (nee Roome). They were in Uxbridge in the 1871 census (as a married couple with a couple of kids). Hannah was living at home (single) in Pickering in the 1861 census. I believe that John Todd arrived in Canada approx. 1865. I have been unable to find a record of their marriage, although Hannah's sister was married in 1861 in Claremont. I have other records showing that John and Hannah had dealings in Claremont (e.g. getting a loan to buy property), so I suspect that they got married in the area too, but all searches so far have turned up nothing. In 1881 they had moved on to Grey county and that is where they remained. I know that John Todd was born in Ireland (approx. 1839) but I don't know where and I'm not sure what route he took when coming to Canada. Any information anyone has on this family would be appreciated. thanks.

Page 97 of the 1851 Canadian census of the east half of Whitby Township (Ontario County, Ontario) exclusive of the town of Whitby lists (lines 19-24) the following MALYON family (farming Conc IX Lot 8, per Ag census):

James (age 45, born England)
Hannah (age 40, born England)
James (age 22, born England)
Sarah (age 20, born Upper Canada)
Mary (age 14, born Upper Canada)
John (age 9, born Upper Canada)

I know that Mary became the second wife of Nicholas BUTSON about 1860.

Did her sister Sarah marry Nicholas' brother Henry BUTSON in the early 1850's? I know that Henry's wife was named Sarah, but I have not found her maiden name, and this is the only Sarah in the 1851 census of about Henry's age (30) living near Henry and Nicholas and their extended family.

Concession IX Lot 8 also was being farmed by Nicholas and Henry's brother William BUTSON as well as Richard COMB and Stephen LAMPKIN (LAMPKIN's wife was related, via a HARPER marriage, to yet another BUTSON brother John's wife, then living in Pickering Twp).

What happened to James Gibson (b c 1840 Ireland)?

When they came to Canada from Ireland, Christopher GIBSON and his wife Elizabeth brought their three children: Ellen (born c 1835), Thomas (c 1838) and James (c 1840). James appears with the family in the 1851 and 1861 censuses of Pickering Township, but after that I lose him.

There is a possible match of a James in Reach Township in 1871, but he shows as being born in Ontario and not in Ireland:

[from http://www.ogs.on.ca/ogspi/7eh/c7gib001.htm#gibson]
GIBSON 1871 census @ca.on.049b3 family 334
@ca.on.ontario_county.reach_township division 3 page 95 film C9975 lds0349175
electoral district of Ontario County North
14 GIBSON James m 27 Ont CofE Irish labourer married
15 GIBSON {?} Isabella f 28 Ire CofE Irish married
16 GIBSON Wesley Johnston m 3 Ont CofE Irish
17 GIBSON William Joseph m 1 Ont CofE Irish
18 ENGLISH Rebecca f 11 Ont CofE Irish

The fact that his first son was given the middle name Johnston makes me especially curious about this family, since James' father Christopher died and his mother Elizabeth remarried to Thomas JOHNSTON, so that James' half-brother John JOHNSTON may have been a sponsor for the child at baptism and the source of the middle name. But this speculation is, of course, offset by the 1871 James being shown as born in Ontario. So I don't know if this is the missing James GIBSON or not.
Reinhardt (Heinrich) Wagner, b. 24 Dec 1825, Niederofleiden, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, came to New York in 1852 with Elisabeth (Elizabetha) Elisabetha Metz, b. 12 Sep 1824, Gontershausen, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. They were not married in Germany They lived in Canada for a short period of time and then moved from Canada to Michigan before 1867. They had two bastard children in Germany, Clara, b. May 1849,died May 1850 in Germany, and Heinrich (Henry) Reinhart, b. Nov 1851. In Canada they had Katherine (Kate) Catharine, b. Abt 1857, Elizabeth, b. May 1858, Mary (Maria) L. (I.), b. 1862, & Johann (John) Philip, b. Sep 1864. Johann was born in Hamilton Ontario, the other children born in Canada were born in " Upper Canada" Ontario. They also had a Son Wilhelm (William), b. Feb 1867, Northfield Twp, Washtenaw County Michigan, which means they had to be out of Canada before Feb. 1867.
I do not know if they ever got married, possibly in Canada, but the ship records show them with different surnames and their second child Heinrich. From the best I can tell, all of the children came to the United States ( Michigan )

I'm searching for any information on the Locke family of Whitby Twp. Thomas Locke and Submit Starr were married sometime around 1820. I recently received information from their daughters prayer book and believe that her parents are Jacob Starr and Rebecca Douglas; married Oct 22nd 1732. Unfortunately the book only lists names and dates, no location or relationships. I did find Jacob Starr living in the household of Moses and Sarah Locke in the 1851 Census for Whitby Twp. Moses and Sarah are again found in the 1870 Census of Sanilac Co., the same place Thomas and Submit were living at that time.

Any information would be very helpful!
Thanks!
Alicia
I've been able to trace their lives only through the census and birth records of their children as they lived in Renfrew, Ontario. I have found Catherine's parents but have hit a total brick wall on obtaining information for Ferdinand's parents. I'm hoping if they got married in the Ottawa Valley area there may be some kind of marriage record that states his parents name. He was born in 1829 and died in Renfrew, Ontario in 1890. His death information didn't list his parents - only his wife and children. If anyone can help - I would sincerely appreciate it.

Proctor Family of Pickering Township

I would love hear from my distant cousins to share family history. My great, great, great grandfather Jonas Proctor who possibly immigrated from England (Suffolk) around 1837:

PROCTOR, Jonas, Sr.

Born in England about 1799 (54 at 1851 census, 62 at 1861 census, 71 at 1871 census)

Emma is his wife - born in England about 1805 (Age 48 at 1851 census, 56 at 1861 census, 66 at 1871 census).

However, an Amy Proctor signed a deed as the wife of Jonas, Sr. in 1871 and Amy is listed as the mother in the English baptismal records for Marianne, Jonas and William.
They were possibly married on 12 Oct. 1824 at Carlton Colville, Suffolk, England. LDS film/fiche 0952981 – “Bishop’s transcripts 1685-1875 – Church of England – Archdeaconry of Suffolk” records this marriage between a Jonah Proctor and an Amey Horning. The recorder viewed a microfilm copy of this record (page 433) on 14 April 2005 and it reads as follows:
Jonah Proctor of this Parish, single man and Amey Horning of … [unreadable text in the margin]
Spinster were married in this church by Banns with the consent(?)
this twelfth day of October in the year on thousand eight …
and twenty four by me [couldn’t decipher text with name]
Jonah and Amey signed the registration by leaving their marks. The marriage was solemnized in the presence of Susan Eaves(?) and John Durrant.

1846 – Resided at Lot 11, Conc. 8 Pickering Township, [Old] Ontario County (originally part of York County), Canada West [8]

11 Oct. 1847 – Date of deed (registered 12 Oct. 1847) by which Jonas acquired the South ½ of the North ½ of Lot 11, Conc. 8 from Jno. S. Macaulay

1851 Census: Resided in Pickering Township, Ontario County, Canada West.
1861 Census: Resided in Pickering Township, Ontario County, Age 62, Farmer, Church of England
1868 Resided in the Township of Pickering, Ontario County, Ontario. [7]
1871 Census: Resided in Pickering Township, Ontario County, Ont., Age 71, Farmer, Church of England (Anglican)

4 Nov. 1872 – Jonas and his wife Emma sold their property to Charles Proctor for $3,100. The transaction included Charles giving Jonas a mortgage back in the amount of $2,544 with an interest rate of 6%. Charles also owned 75 acres next door in Lot 10, Conc. 8, which he acquired from Robert Agur, Sr. in 1854 [10]

Jonas’ 10 or 11 Children:
1. Marianne – baptized 1 Sept. 1827 at Carlton Colvile, Suffolk, England [LDS film 918510] Jonas’ occupation is recorded therein as being a labourer.

2. Charles
Born 1829 Suffolkshire, England (aged 30 in 1861 census, 39 in 1871, 40 [?] at 1881 census,

Married in 1861 to Annie Webb of Pickering, Canada West (b. about 1840 Somersetshire, England, d, 24 Nov. 1872 (or 1877?) in her 33rd year, a dau. of Thomas Webb, sister of Mary)

1861, 1881 census place Pickering Township
1891 Census: Pickering Township, Age 57, Widower, Farmer, Church of England

Died 30 Dec. 1901 [9] in his 73rd year [6]
Buried Bethel Cemetery, Pickering Township near Claremont Ont.
This tombstone has the following inscription:
“Friends in Jesus, why these tears
“O’re (sic) my dull and lifeless clay
“Could you see my present bliss
“Tears to joy would pass away” [6]

Charles’ will was dated 25 July 1898 and was probated on 11 Jan. 1902. His executors were Charles Proctor and William George Scott, both yeomen of the Township of Pickering. He bequeathed his property as follows:
-75 acres in Lot 10, Conc. 8, together with the farm stock and implements to his son Charles.
-“…Homestead farm, where I now reside…” 50 acres in Lot 11, Conc. 8, together with the household furnishings to his daughters Amanda, Annie, Susan and Ida.
-50 acres being the North part of Lot 11, Conc. 8, to his son Henry subject to him paying $1,000 in ten instalments payable to his sisters.
-The residue of Charles’ estate was granted to his son Charles.

The land registration search completed in Aug. 2006 failed to reveal any land transactions involving Henry Proctor.

In 1905 Charles spinster daughters Amanda, Annie, Ida and Susan sold the South ½ of the North ½ of Lot 11, Conc. 8 to a Henry Moore for the sum of $2,000. Charles Jr.’s property in Lot 10, Conc. 8 was sold in 1912. And so it seems ends the Proctor family’s farming history in Pickering Township.

Charles’ children:
i) Amanda – Born in Ontario
1871 census – Age 10
1891 census – Age 29, Resided with father, Baptist
1905 – Spinster residing in Alliston, Ont.

I am interested in finding info on a Robert Grant Ward who settled first in Whitby, Ontario. His son ,Robert Grant Ward, was supposed to have been born in either Whitby or Kingston. He is said to have been born in 1837. He married an Ann Mckillop Cairns born about 1862. Curious as to whether that family is found in Ontario. I am interested in any cemetary listings, birth and death listings. I am also trying to find the link between a James Douglas(1866) and a Judge Cairns.

(Morris) Elliott and

George Knott Section G
Eliza Knott

I am most interested in Mary Jane and Eliza Morris as I am trying hard to put together 4 orphaned children. They had two brothers William Andrew (my ggggrandfather) and one who went by George, but might have been T.T. Morris.

Does anyone know if there is a history book on Whitby that mention any of these people?

Thank you for any and all help you are able to give.

This was shown under "Glenville". Does anyone have any information?

James McCallum (1816-1900) was born 'near Glassgow, Scot". according to his tombstone.
Mary Stevenson (married Andrew Benjamin Fraser)

Mary Fraser (nee Stevenson) was my grandmother, born on March 4, 1881 in the Brooklyn / Whitby / Oshawa area.

She died in Burk's Falls, ON on February 26, 1961.

I have very little information on her family, but I am told that her father was Robert Stevenson a farmer in the Brooklyn / Whitby / Oshawa area.

I also believe she had two sisters, Margaret (Aunt Maggie - b 1869) and Elizabeth (Aunt Bessy - b 1883).

I am told that Maggie married a man named Kelly, and either her son or grandson was Gordon Kelly who spent the last years of his life in Burk's Falls, ON (my second cousin).

Any assistance would be appreciated.
