and West Point, Ripley, Iowa.
Tell me more, please. Eliza (Elize) Underwood is a ggggrandmother of mine. She married William T. Dennis. Her father was John/James Underwood of New York and mother was Maria McLees of Dutchess County, NY, both born in 1800.
I was researching Peter McLees and Maria McLees and found an 1880 census listing Maria Hunter and Oliver Hunter, both born in 1800, he in Connecticut, living with James Underwood, farmer in West Point, Ripley, Iowa, born in 1830 in Canada. That's the same birth year I have for Eliza Underwood. I didn't know they were in Iowa with the Dennises until today.
So, when her son Robert Attwood Dennis, my gggrandfather, was "kicked out of the Burgessville Baptist Church for dancing", and moved to Ripley, Butler, Iowa in about 1870, did the "unQuakered" Hunters move with them? Or were they already there? They would have been 65 years old when the U.S. civil war ended in '65....
Is James Underwood Robert's uncle or a cousin? Robert Attwood was born in 1844 in Burgessville. His wife was Susanna C. (Susie) Tower, daughter of Thomas Tower, b. 1811, England, and Matilda, b. 1814, Ireland, of Canada West.
I have unconfirmed notes that John/James' father and grandfather were also named James and from New Hampshire. Do you have accurate info on them?
