Re: George Johnston in Hawkesbury, 1865

There's a George W Johnson, b. 1839 in Canada East, in W. Hawkesbury on the 1861 census, tinsmith. He's a singleton, so if this is the correct George, he married Margaret in 1861 or 1862 and had Robert shortly after getting married.

???

Ontario, Canada, Marriages, 1801-1928 about George Johnson
Name: George Johnson
Birth Place: North Gore, Quebec, Canada
Residence: Vankleek Hill
Age: 24
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1838
Father Name: Alexander Johnson
Mother Name: Rachel Johnson
Spouse Name: Margaret A. Flynn
Spouse's Age: 19
Spouse Birth Year: abt 1843
Spouse Birth Place: Vankleek Hill
Spouse Residence: Vankleek Hill
Spouse Father Name: Benjamin Dexter Flynn
Spouse Mother Name: Margaret Flynn
Marriage Date: 21 Dec 1862
Marriage Location: L'Orignal
Marriage County or District: Prescott

In the 1871 census (W. Hawkesbury), George is 33, Margaret Ann is 27, Robert G is 8 and Alice Mary is 6. The information all fits together with the marriage and the previous census.

Unfortunately there's nothing on either George or Alexander in the Prescott/Argenteuil history book.

In the 1851 census, in Gore (Deux-Montagnes Co, QC) There's an Alexandre Johnston, b. 1798 Ireland, wife Rachel, and a number of children. If you don't have access to the 1851 census here on Ancestry, it's free at automatedgenealogy.com

tiffany

They were originally from Chatham Quebec in the 1830's. John was born it's said in Ireland and it's said his Father's name was Luke Scott and Mother's name IS MARY but no maiden name....Did the research on the Mann's and nothing there. Can't find any McLaren's in either place Prescott or Chatham Quebec

There are a host of Bissonnettes in Prescott county, but no marriages for children of this couple. The first RC parish didn't open here until the 1830s - 1835 @ L'Orignal. So any birth/baptism records would be elsewhere - possible back over the river into QC, or a non-Catholic parish (and those records are spotty at best for that time period).

Jane was deceased by 1813, when Louis married Françoise Gauvin at Cap-Santé (on 23 Feb). The act doesn't mention any children present at the wedding, just a host of friends from the Marcot family. I've searched BMS200 and the LAFRANCE databases for children born to Louis & Jane and/or Louis & Francoise and found none.

Tiffany

Hello,

The McCauley's were early settlers in Prescott County. They settled in "Centrefield". Other early settlers with them were Darragh, McKinley, McCrank, Beggs. They were settlers from County Antrim, Ireland.A description can be found in Cyrus Thomas "History of counties Argenteuil and prescott". here's a link.

http://archive.org/stream/historyprescott00thomuoft#page/628...

There was no catholic parish until one was built in Curran. the early settlers had to go to Montebello, PQ. I have had success finding Darragh info in these parish records. they are part of the Drouin collection on Ancestry.CA.

You might find some leads on Madden in the book below:

"Emigrant Fathers Native Sons,Shane Family of Prescott County,Ontario,Canada 1817-1990"
Author,Publisher:Katherine Madden Adamson

hope this helps

Robyn Stewart

Hi Tiffany:

Like you, I thought Harry was buried at Capital Memorial Gardens - it would make sense seeing his wife, Eula is buried there and the OCFA reflects the same info you shared. Mystery solved, right? Not exactly...

You're right according to Ancestry family trees stating the year he died as 1935 - however if you look at the headstone I attached from Capital Memorial Gardens it has the birth and death year wrong and he is resting with what looks to be someone not even attached to my family tree!

Charles Harry Brown was born September 13, 1898 in Winchester, Ontario. The year of death is off by 33 years and he died before my great grandmother, she passed in 1967. This C.H. Harry Brown passed in 1968.

Perhaps, if I could also locate his Certificate of Death this might provide a few more clues.

Do you have any more ideas?

Thanks for your help!

Amy

There is a large gap in online resources for Ontario deaths. The main database stops in 1938, unless the decedent died overseas, which is covered thru 1947. Otherwise, the main resources are the Canada Obituary Collection, and the Obituary Daily Times Index which starts in 1995. If the family was Catholic, you *might* find it in one of the parish repertoires (as part of the Drouin Collection [on Ancestry or FamilySearch], or on sites like BMS2000.org or GenealogieQuebec.com). Otherwise, you're basically stuck browsing through individual cemeteries.

There are a few cemetery transcriptions on the Prescott GenWeb page. You can also check the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid.
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~onpresco/id5.htm
I have links to several other cemetery/ancestor searches on that page, including OCFA.

Good luck
Tiffany

Harry BROWN; Eula GENOE

Hi there:

I thought I would take advantage of the Valentine's Day free trial this weekend and was hoping someone, somewhere in Winchester could help me unlock further clues and/or possibly more information on my great grandfather, Charles Harry Brown. My great grandfather went by his second name, Harry.

I haven't had much success in locating his resting place, a Certificate of Death, nor an obituary. Though I managed to locate Census Records confirming his existence and a Certificate of Marriage to my great grandmother, Eula Genoe.

Charles Harry Brown was born September 13, 1898 and I'm unsure of his exact date or cause of death. His father is Howard J. Brown also from Winchester and his mother, is Annie May Brown (nee: Hitsman).

I've had more luck finding information on the Hitsman side of the family tree by fluke than on the Brown side and was hoping someone could fill in the blanks about Harry and/or his father Howard.

Seems all roads have lead to a dead end and I was hoping to breathe new life into my research efforts...

Harry was married to Eula Genoe and my grandmother shared with my mother before her passing they stayed married up until his passing.

My great grandmother, Eula was born in 1907 and passed in 1967 and is buried in Capital Memorial Gardens.

My great grandfather, Harry was either a labourer or machinist and was described as a decent man.

My father mentioned to me my grandfather, Lyle Roy Brown asked prior to his passing if my father would be willing to take him somewhere. My father seemed to think somewhere like Windsor or Wendover - though he wasn't completely sure.

If you have any information you can provide - including any historical photographs, I would greatly appreciate your help and efforts!

P.S. I apologize for the duplicate post in advance since the "Ontario" board/general board is too broad, I wanted to focus on more the local districts and townships where concerned.

marriage record - Hugh McMillan and Eliza Thompson

I was wondering if some one could look into the marriage record for the subject individuals who were my g-grandparents on my mother's side.
We have looked for quite awhile and so far haven't found anything. What I know about them is sketchy except the McMillan's were from the Hawkesbury, Lochiel, Longueuil area primarily based on census records, and records of their children's marriages, births, etc. However, they did move around a bit. As far east as we've found records of them was Finch and Crysler in Stormont Co. in 1881-1882. We know virtually nothing about Eliza Thompson's family, which is what we are ultimately trying to undiscover. There is genealogy that I received through correspondence with McMillan descendents of the same family, but there is little information on Hugh McMillan.

We assume Hugh and Eliza were married around 1886 in the area where the McMillan's primarily lived (Prescott and Glengarry) but we are not certain. A brief chronology of where Hugh and Eliza were around the time of their marriage is as follows (dates and names vary significantly from record to record):

1. abt 1866: Hugh (Ewen) John McMillan: b. abt 1866 in Ontario to John McMillan and Mary Ann White.
2. abt 1868: Eliza Thompson b. abt 1868 in Ontario (nothing else known about her family).
3. 1871 census: John (42) and Mary Ann (34) McMillan, Hugh, et.al. living in Lochiel.
4. 1875 marriage: Catherine McMillan (d/o John and Mary Ann McMillan) to Louis Brown, Hawkesbury; witn: Ewen (Hugh) McMillan.
5. 1881 census: John (58) and Maryann (44), Ewen (14), et.al. in Finch, Stormont, Ont.
6. 1882 marriage: Elmira McMillan (d/o John and Mary Ann McMillan) to William Brown, Crysler, Stormont, Ont.; witn: Hugh McMillan.
7. abt 1886 marriage: maybe circa Jul 1886 in Hawkesbury or Lochiel, Ont.?????? A big guess.
8. 1887 birth: John R. McMillan to Hugh and Eliza McMillan, Montreal, Canada (ref: USA military and naturalization records)
9. Sept 1888 birth: Catherine McMillan to Hugh and Eliza McMillan, Prescott, Ont. (first name not given in Ontario birth record)
10. abt 1894 birth: Wilfred L. McMillan to Hugh and Eliza McMillan, Hawkesbury, Ont. (USA military record).
11. 1891 census: 'Huci'/Hugh (27) and Eliza (22) McMillan, and children, Longueuil, Ont., w/ John (66) and Mary A. (56) McMillan.
12. abt. 1897: Hugh and Eliza and family immigrated to North Dakota, USA.
Note: Eliza died in 1906 in Devils Lake, ND. Hugh McMillan married several times and eventually returned to Canada where he disappeared.

Any tidbits of information you might be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Dan Harvey
Snohomish, Washington

P.S. there is some indication that Eliza Thompson may have been Catholic, and that her middle name might have been Lavinia/Levinia or a variation.

You have really been a great help. Without the info you found, I would probably be looking for another week or longer.
There is another Elizabeth Thompson in the Glengarry area (father Benjamin Thompson b. abt 1801) that is older but I plan to put a message on the Glengarry board and research her also. Since she lived in the same area as Hugh McMillan, maybe there is a remote chance that she might be the one.
Thanks again for all your help,
Dan

I think I might have found out what happened to the Elizabeth/Isabella Thompson that I was searching for. A clue from the research above, especially the marriage record of John Thompson and Elizabeth McDuf/Leduc, lead me to what appears to be her death record.
From LDS FamilySearch - Ohio Deaths 1908-1953, I found the death record for Isabella Keir (wd) who d. 24 Mar 1938 in Lucas, Ohio. The record shows:
birth: 7 Jun 1862, St. Eugene, Ont., Canada
father: Leduc
mother: Elizabeth Mcduf
spouse: Thomas A. Keir

So, it looks like Isabella/Elizabeth is the wrong Elizabeth Thompson I have been looking for.
If anyone sees this differently, please let me know.
Dan Harvey
Boy, excellent research. I don't know how you came up with all that info but it sure looks like most or all of it is on target.
I think the James Thompson age 3 in the 1901 census might be the son of John Jr. The elder Thompson's are just too old to have had a child that young. In the 1911 census it appears to show John Jr. as a widow (the writing is faint so hard to read).
It will take me a few reads and some more research to absorb all you have provided, but whatever I find I will post here for the record and for more consideration.
Also, we have always thought that the female McMillan b. 8 Sep 1888 is Catherine A.
Thanks so much for your help. Hopefully, all your fine research will help lead to what happened to Elizabeth/Isabella Thompson.
Dan

The John, Elizabeth and John Jr on 1911 census don't really match up with the information on 1901 census. If people get their birth years wrong they usually know their birth month. But enumerators are known to make many mistakes.

Don't know if this is of any use to you but may be a way to track Elizabeth.

I think this is the James on 1901 census.
WW1 Attestation Papers
James Stanley Thompson, PC960607, b 1 July 1897 at St Eugene Ont, farmer, next of kin: John Thompson, grandfather of RR1 St Eugene Ont. Signed up in Ottawa 6 July 1918.
No record of his being killed.

St Eugene is in Hawkesbury Tsp, Prescott County.

James Stanley Proudfoot, b 1 July 1897, mother Jane Thompson. Prescott.
Would seem he went by Thompson not Proudfoot. I didn't find anything under the Proudfoot name.

McMurray Family Tree on Ancestry.ca has your Thompsons on it.
Says John Thompson died 1901 in Frontenac County. No source given.
Marriage to Elizabeth Keller 27 Oct 1861 in Frontenac. No source given.
All the children's names are the same as on 1881 census.
Only information re chidren is for John Pauley, says he was born in Frontenac and died there as well. Nothing in his obit says who his parents were.
Your Thompsons always seemed to live in Hawkesbury.

Found this marriage
Jennie Thompson, 24, born and living St Eugene Ont, d/o John Thompson & Elizabeth MacDuff, married James Clark, 28, carter, born and living Mabel Quebec, s/o John Clark & Bella McAllister, 13 May 1903. Prescott.

Elizabeth Jane b 1876, mother of James Stanley?
She is the only Thompson I can find married in Prescott.

1911 Chatham, Argentuil Quebec
CLARK
James, March 1874, 37, Quebec
Jennie, Sept 1875 ,32, Ont
Thelma, 6 [transcribed as Helena but I think it is Thelma]
???, son, 1908, 3
Harriette, 1910, 1
Chidren all born Quebec.
Thelma Isabell Clark was born 3 March 1905, bapt 18 Dec 1913 at Dalesville Baptist Church. Parents James John Clark and Jennie Elizabeth Thompson.
Irwin James Clark b 22 Jan 1908, baptism as above.
Kenneth George Clark, b 1 Mar 1910, baptism as above.

Next door, on 1911 census, is Albert Thompson,b 1864 Ont, who may well be her brother.

John Thompson
Birth Place: St. Andrews, Quebec, Canada
Residence: East Hawkesbury
Age: 28
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1836
Father Name: Joseph Thompson
Mother Name: Margaret Sims
Spouse Name: Elizabeth Leduc
Spouse's Age: 29
Spouse Birth Year: abt 1835
Spouse Birth Place: East Hawkesbury
Spouse Residence: East Hawkesbury
Spouse Father Name: John McDuff
Spouse Mother Name: Isabella McColum
Marriage Date: 10 Nov 1864
Marriage County or District: Prescott

A lot of the above names fit in with their children's names- Isabella, John, Marguerite, Joseph.
If they got married in 1864 perhaps the older children aren't Elizabeth's. It doesn't say whether either one of them is single or widowed on the original registration.

Mary McKeddie
Birth Place: Chatham Prv Quebec
Age: 20
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1869
Father Name: John McKeddie
Mother Name: Margaret McGregor
Spouse Name: Albert Thompson
Spouse's Age: 22
Spouse Birth Year: abt 1867
Spouse Birth Place: East Hawkesbury
Spouse Father Name: John Thompson
Spouse Mother Name: Lozzie McDuff
Marriage Date: 12 Sep 1889
Marriage County or District: Prescott

There was a female McMillan b 8 Sept 1888 in Prescot. This could be Catharine A on 1891 census.

I've tried every trick I know to find their marriage and baptism of son but no luck.
Sometimes on the children's birth registration it gives place and date of marriage of parents. This is in Ontario so if they had more children in North Dakota it may be worth looking for.

John and Elizabeth Thompson Family

We are trying to find information on what happened to Elizabeth/Isabella Thompson (Isabella 1871 census and Elizabeth 1881census) after the 1881 census. She is the daughter of the subject persons and was born abt 1863 in Ontario. Her parents, John and Elizabeth, were born (depending on the census) btwn 1834-1838 and 1833-1840, respectively. The Thompson's lived in Hawkesbury East, Prescott from at least 1871 through the 1911 census. We don't know what happened to any of the other family at this point. Daughter, Elizabeth/Isabella Thompson, maybe a g-grandmother.

As some background, we have been trying for a number of years to find our g-grandmother's Thompson family without any success whatsoever in the Ontario and Quebec area. Her name was Elizabeth (Eliza) Thompson and she married Hugh John McMillan. From census records, Elizabeth was born about Nov. 1868 in Ontario. Hugh (Ewen 1881 census and Huci 1891 census) and his family (parents John and Mary Ann) lived in the Hawkesbury, Lochiel, Finch, Longueuil area of Ontario. We believe that Eliza and Hugh met there somehow. Their first child, John Richard McMillan, was born 1887 in Montreal from most records. Hugh and Eliza and their family moved to North Dakota in 1897 where Elizabeth died in 1906 from tonsillitis. Even though the above Elizabeth/Isabella Thompson was born on an earlier date than the person we are looking for, she did live in the same area as Hugh and so we are down to researching anyone that might somewhat fit the profile.

There was an Elizabeth Thompson b. Nov 1869 in West Garafraxa, Ont. to Theodore Thompson and Mary Ann McGowen but that turned out to be a false lead.

Any tidbits of information (marriage, etc.) on Elizabeth/Isabella Thompson would be greatly appreciated.
Dan Harvey
Snohomish, WA
Could someone translate for me the french terms (occupation, etc.) in the 1891 census for the Elehu Marston and Huci (Hugh) McMillan families? They are shown living in Longeuil, Prescott, pages 33 and 34. For some reason Ancestry.com seems to connect the two families and I'm trying to determine if they are related, so understanding the terms might help.
Thank you,
Dan Harvey
Snohomish, Washington

Hi James. John also had a son by the name of John McDonald b. abt 1815 according to books and census. This John McDonald married Mary Ann Campbell on 04 Jan 1848, from records of the Church of Scotland at Cornwall The Minister was Hugh Urquhart who was the minister at St. Johns but was also a curcuit rider. John and Mary had a son Roderick who was my grandfather's father. Family stories say that the McDonald family were Presbyterian when they left Scotland and then the mother and most of the children claimed Roman Catholic as their religion. Which is why Nancy is buried at St. Columba. Her father was said to have been buried near her. Church records show that McDonald had two plots at St. Columba but only Nancy has a tomb stone. Mary is probably buried at St. Alexander in Glengarry. I have followed some of the children of Ewan and Randal. The Scots of 1802 is recorded in their own book. As for the families knowing each other it is hard to say but many of the Scots in Glengarry and Prescott knew of each other.

The O'Reilly Family.

(I am going to paste an email I've sent to so many people. All the information I'm looking for is there.)

Hello, my name is Sara Lauzon. I am 21 years old, and I am living in a small town known as Cornwall, in Ontario, Canada.

The reason I am emailing you is because I am hoping to locate some information regarding two O'Reilly's. I am currently writing a book about a very wonderful man, who served as a judge in our town for nearly 30 years.

I am looking for an information regarding his father (James O'Reilly) and his grandfather (Peter O'Reilly).

From what little information I do have about them and their coming to Canada, I can tell you this:

James was born in Westport, County Mayo, Ireland on September 16th 1823.
They came to Upper Canada in 1832.

James married Rose Mary Bermingham.
They had a son (I don't know if they had any other children) Judge James Redmond O'Reilly. This is whom I am writing a book about.
He was born on Feburary 14th 1862, and he died on April 23rd 1929.
He was born in Kingston Ontario, died in Cornwall Ontario.

I am trying my best to create a family tree, and get dates and such organized in a way that I'll be able to tell people their family history through story.
However, this is easier said then done.

I would sincerely appreciate any information you could provide me regarding either Peter or James.. Any pictures, any information, help me get into contact with direct family members, a family that always kept close to the O'Reilly's.. Anything of this regards would be a dream come true. This has been a mission now for 4 years, I am determined to write this book to honour this man.

I thank you so much for taking the time to read this email, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sara.

My great grandmother was Priscilla Mayhew (or Laviere) on some documents. She was the daughter of William Mayhew or Laviere; he was the son of Joshua or John Laviere who was a son of Daniel Mayhew or Laviere.

Priscilla married John Wilson Baldwin-son of Daniel and Ellen (Wilson) Baldwin in Ontario (around Dundas).

I have her siblings as Eliza Mayhew, Sarah Anne Levere, Mary Jane Mayhew, and Catherine Mayhew but with the hodge podge of last names I am not sure this is correct!

John Wilson and Priscilla Adeline had 10 (I think)children, most born in Ontario; they moved to Brandon Manitoba when most of the children were young, and then eventually moved to Woodlands/Warren Manitoba area to farm.

Some of their children still live in this area.

Thanks! happy searching!
I am researching a McDonald family that came from Scotland 1817. They stopped in Lancaster and then Alexandria Glengarry county. John McDonald petitioned for land in Caledonia Township. They farmed the gores on the 7th and 8th concession. I have land records, township records and census' to verify the families that eventually led to my grandfather Donald James McDonald b. 11 Mar 1888. The information I have seems to indicate that the family came from Glencoe, Scotland. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Rod Jackson. Burlington, ON, Canada

Thank you so much for this help! I would hug you if i met you!! We have been searching for this record forever literally. My great grandfather started looking in the 1960s. So this is ONE mystery solved. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

NOW I have another query:

YOU have now confirmed that the record you located cannot be the same person named "Jos.Liversant" who died in Bay City Michigan at aged 42 on August 5, 1892.

THUS, I have another query. This is the info that i have:
I have a handwritten letter from St. Mary's Rectory of Bay City Michigan USA which clearly states that

"Jos. Liversant date of death August 5th, 1892, date of burial August 6th 1892, age 42 yrs. Priest: Jos.Schrembs and cemetery: St. Joseph"

The letter explained that Jos. Liversant's remains were moved to Calvary Cemetery outside of Bay City in the 1950s as St Joseph's cemetery was transformed into a parking lot.

This Jos. Liversant was married to Albina Robillard on 24 February 1873 St Louis-de-Gonzague, Beauharnois, QC and Albina was forced to put 4 of her 8 kids into an orphanage in 1894.

Do you have any idea how I would locate birth/baptismal record for "Jos. Liversant" born ABT 1850. It is possible that he was an illegitimate child in my opinion.

Any assistance would be AWESOMELY appreciated.
