James and Emma (nee George) Dougherty

I am looking for information on what happened to James and Emma's children. In the 1901 census they are listed with four boys. Then in 1902 they had Mildred May Dougherty. Then in 1905 Emma died during child birth. Mildred was living with my great great grandparents (George Oscar and Jessie (nee Marsh)Sleeman). I searched the 1911 census and can not find these boys anywhere. I am curious to see if they all died in a fire or something as I have not been able to find them. In 1915 George Sleeman died and then Jessie Sleeman and James Dougherty married in 1920 in Rainy River. Jessie died in 1949 in Emo and James was still alive then (he would have been 84) and I can not find his obit anywhere either. Any info would be a great help.

Thanks
Tracy Jackson

According to a 1908 newspaper article celebrating the 50th wedding anniversary of Berthold and Sophia Menthe HOWE of Winona, MN their son R.O. HOWE was then living in Rainy River, Canada. The only information I have about this man is that he was born in Winona, MN about 1863.

I am new to Canadian genealogy and would appreicate some ideas. Can someone suggest sources for me to research?

Right now Mr. HOWE is my brick wall!

The OSTER family moved from the Bayfield & Goderich area of Huron County, Ont. to Stratton, Morely Township, Rainy River Dst. after 1895. From 1902-1940, John Joseph 'Joe' Oster ran the Stratton Post Office & Oster Brothers General Store. Joe was the son of Michael Thomas OSTER & Mary Elizabeth BANNON, who built their home on the shores of the Rainy River. In 1905, Joe Oster married Eliza Jane CRAIGEN, the daughter of Denis CRAIGEN (CREGAN) & Mary Ellen KENNELLY, both Irish immigrants. The CRAIGEN family moved to Stratton from the areas of Cloyne, Tweed & Kingston, all located in Lennox & Addington County, Ont.

I'm interested in exchanging information on any of the families of OSTER, CRAIGEN, BANNON, KENNELLY, MULVIHILL & McELROY as well as the collateral lines, ARMSTRONG, McMAHON, FLYNN, KAVANAUGH, RATHWELL, MURPHY, HUNT, BISHOP, & CULHANE, to name just a few.

Jo Mitchell
jmitchell@ameritech.net
Hi!

I am researching a family, who left Sweden for Rainy River about 1911. Maybe the father Axel David Andersson/Mellkvist left earlier. He was born 1877, his wife Hanna born Johansson 1887 left Sweden together with their son Stig born 1909, all in a parish called Vassanda-Naglum. All information about this family is interesting for me.
Harry Grigg moveed to Fort Frances from Winnipeg about 1931 with his 9-year old daughter Margaret Ellen Grigg. I believed he probably passed away in Fort Frances in the late 30' or early 40's. Harry was born in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba Aug. 16, 1884 and he served with the Canadian Forces in World War One. His daughter Margaret married Everett Doman in 1946. A Mr. and Mrs. Frank Willis seemed to be closely associated with Mr. Grigg and his daughter.
Any help you can give me in thei search would be very much appreciated.

Larry.

I have imorted it into a word document, and will do free look-ups.

If there is anyone that would like to contribute to the site, please let me know.

I am in the process of doing my Family tree, well more like a small bush. I have a very small family with several missing branches. I have the information on my Father, Patrick Milton Benjamin Fawcett He is still alive and was born in Fort Frances Ontario in 1936.

My GrandFather Benjamin Fawcett has been missing since 1954 after a family dispute. No one knows what has happened to him and I do not know his birthdate or birth place for him. No one in my Family seems to know anything about him.

I have found The death certificate of my Great Grand Father Benjamin Cooke Fawcett. He was in prison in Fort Frances Ontario in 1914. He died in prison 7 years later. I have never been able to find out any information on why he's was in prison and no record of a court case.

Is there any help or sugestions you can give me in my search I'm hitting bricks walls so hard my head is starting to hurt.

Thanks
Lee Werth
Rainy River District Cemeteries

There used to be a site, I think by, G.W. WOOD, that had transcriptions for 20 Rural Cemeteries, in the Rainy River District. I can find many sites that list this site, but it seems like the site has gone off the internet.
Did anyone, download or print this site?? If so, could you do a lookup for me. Cemeteries included Chapple (Barwick) and Emo.
Lynne

Wood Flannigan

Hello. My grandfathers life is a mystery.
I'm looking for any information or family members I can find. He was born Ernest Henry Wood Apr 1901 or 03, not sure. He died in 1977. He was the son of Gertrude (Kelly?) and Henry (WM.?) Wood. His father died when he was young and his mother remarried a Flannigan.
He left home young. He had a brother Frank Wood, wifes name Mildred. Frank brought their mother Gertrude to South Dakota in the 1940's to see Ernest and his family. I have a photo. Frank had 2 sons, Frances and Jack. I received a letter from her in the late 1970's. I was trying to find family info back then. Still have the letter she wrote me. She lived at 411 Crowe Ave. Fort Frances, Ont. She told me that his brother Harry was passed away but he had lived at 207 3rd St also of Fort Frances, Ont. I would love to hear from anyone with any information on my family. Thank you. Debbie Wood Tuck

Peterborough to Rainy River - What was the connection?

I have been researching my family, the Shairps, from Peterborough County, but every time I run into what seems to be a dead end, I discover the person, whether it be family members, in-laws, neighbours, etc. have moved to the Rainy River District from northern Peterborough County. I also saw reference on the R & G Woods site where various Ontario cemeteries were transcribed, that many persons buried in the Rainy River and Kenora areas were from Peterborough.
What was the connection? Can anyone help?
A family member did a lot of research on the direct Oster clan - Thunder Bay, Fort Frances and nearby but only with dates of b, d, m, no places but am willing to share what I have. Through Message bd and researach I have been able to do quite a bit for my aunt. I have been trying to establish how Oster got their Irish lineage and have seen through BANNON and some CREGAN. - the Irish lines. Looking forward to hearing from you - you may email me direct. I'm unsure of the last name as Mainville.
Their children:
James Laramie, 1912
Eliza Laramie 1918
Andrew Laramie
Loti Laramie
Georgina Lottie Laramie 17 Mar 1923--my great grandma.
Any info on these ancestors or their families is much appreciated.
Mindy. mindy_chad_mclane@yahoo.com

I just found my great aunt's obituary and it tells me my cousin, Edith Newman (nee Scott) was living with her husband Leroy in Fort Frances in 1981. And! big surprise, that there were children; Paul, Susan, Lynn, Jamie and Wendy. Do these names resonate? Anyone in Fort Frances remember Newmans from the 50's or 60's?

Searching Larocque from Pinewood, Ont

Can anyone help me find the dates of birth and deaths of my maternal grandparents? Their names are Ernest Larocque and his spouse Jeanne Legros. They lived in Pinewood, Ontario. I think Pepere Larocque died in 1957 because I was then 3 years old. I remember the house beside the bridge near the river.
I would to find all the siblings of Ernest and his parents; the same for my Memere (Jeanne died in 1972). Also i would like all the ascendants as far as possible so that I can complete my family tree. Again thanks.
Nicole Descottes (nee Fouillard) daughter of:
Alexandre and Claire Emerisa Fouillard (nee Larocque)

Is someone able to do a look-up for me, either in the Rainy River Record, or Fort Frances Times, or perhaps the records of "Our Lady of the Way Parish" R.C. Church in Pinewood.
The family lived in Worthington Twp., Sleeman, Ont. along the banks of the Rainy River about the turn of the century.

In particular, I'm hoping to find an informative obituary for Annie (Bridget) KEARNEY who died "at a young age" on Dec. 6, 1883. Would like to know where she is buried!

Her death registration is #001063, Rat Portage, (now Kenora)dated 1884, which I've not yet seen.

I'm wondering if maybe she died in the Rainy River district though????? Can't locate any info about her in Kenora! Any help would be appreciated!!
Karen (KEARNEY)
