I am researching the family of James Roberts (b: Aug 16, 1822) married to (1st) Elizabeth George and (2nd) Hannah Knight. James parents are thought to be William Roberts and Rebecca or Johanna Armstrong.
Information received from a family member states "that the first Roberts is said to have been a Captain in the British army and sent to Canada to "guard the mica mines/quarries in Quebec around the turn of the century". It is not sure if he came from Wales to Ireland to Canada, or from England to Ireland to Canada. The story continues that his wife (name unknown) either had a child on the boat on the way to Canada or that she had the child shortly after arriving in Canada. One of their children is said to be William Roberts who was married to either Rebecca or Johanna Armstrong".
James Roberts first marriage to Elizabeth George produced three children as follows:
Martha Ann Roberts b: Jan 23, 1849 Merrickville, Ontario - married to William Burwell Eady
Rebecca Roberts b: June 12, 1851 Mud Lake, Ontario - married to Robert Airth Jamieson
Elizabeth Roberts b: abt 1853 Horton, Ontario - married to Robert Airth Jamieson (It is believed that Elizabeth George died during the birth of Elizabeth)
In the 1861 Algona Census Elizabeth Roberts was living with her grandparents? William Roberts and Rebecca Armstrong.
James Roberts after the death of his first wife married Hannah Knight, in the fall of 1868 James, Hannah and their children from his second marriage moved to Harburn, Ontario, - 1881, 1891 and 1901 census they lived in Harcourt, Dysart, Peterborough, Ontario.
Any information on the above Roberts, Armstrong and George families would be appreciated.
