Iam researching the family of Robert and Mary Jane Thompson who were living in Westmeath in 1881. They adopted or took in a child by the name of Margaret Louisa Morrow (or Moreau). She was the daughter of my great grandfather and his 1st wife. She died abt 2 weeks after the baby was born. Iam descented from the 2nd wife. What happened to the Thompson family did they adopt or take in any other children? Why did they take Margaret Louise in? Were they related at all to the Morrows?

My great grandfather Thomas Cook came from Scotland to Canada in 1868 with his wife Janet Hart and 3 living children (Thomas b.1859,Helen b.1861,and Samuel b.1865) and settled in Renfrew County, Ontario. His brother (Christian name unknown) also came on the same voyage and I believe the point of landing was Montreal. They separated in Montreal and never were in contact again.

If anyone has access to records for a Catholic Church in Pembroke, Renfrew County, would it be possible to check for a marriage record for Ferdinand Blais and Catherine Vallaley about 1870? I am trying to find out if Ferdinand had listed himself as a widower to varify family information as to his pedigree. If you could help or supply the name(s)of Catholic Church's in Renfrew for that time frame I would sincerely appreciate it. Thank you.

Still looking for historical information on Edward Papke(later Popkey) and Amalga Lenzer (Loenser??) Church records give Edward's father as David. Back in 1999, I felt Michael Papke was Edward's father. I have looked at Ewald Papke's family and feel he is Michael's son. Edward Papke's came to Eganville via Brockville & NY in 1872. Also looking for first wife of Herman Popp. Believe her name was Amalie or Emma or a combination. 2nd wife was Johana Rhode. Herman came to Eganville in 1874. His daughter, Ida Popp, (married to William H Papke)was my grandmother. Looking for Ida's mother. Does anyone know when William Popp married Johana/Hana Rhode? William died in 1914 but I don't know where he or Johanna are buried.

Legarde-Turcotte Family

Legarde-Turcotte Family
While census material consistently enumerates them as French, this family has always been considered Algonquin by members of the Bonnechere Algonquin Community.

Family history shows that the descendants of this family believed themselves to be Algonquin and suffered discrimination as aboriginal people. For example, according to stories passed on by Marie Alexina Turcotte (b. circa 1902) the white community isolated the aboriginal people and “treated them as underlings.” Other descendants indicated that they were treated like “drunken Indians living on welfare” which caused many to change their names and hide their aboriginal identity.

According to family information the oldest remembered ancestor of the Turcotte-Legarde family was Thomas Legarde who was born around 1800. One of his daughters, Sophie Legarde (dite St. Jean) was born around 1830 and died sometime after 1901. Sophie married Xavier Francis Turcotte at Ile du Grand Calumet in October 1849. The family history information indicates that Xavier Turcotte is the son of Joseph Turcotte (c. 1788) and Marguerite Desrochers (c. 1793).

The 1881 census shows three Turcotte households in Petawawa Township. The names of the parents have not been recorded, however, their three children John Turcotte (6), Henia (11) and a nine month-old girl Densasnas were all listed. One family was headed by Enevey Turcotte (30), Victoria (19) and their young children Enevey (3) and Emma (2). Their neighbours were Andrew Turcotte (28), his wife Elanor (22) and their son Andrew (5). All of these people were recorded as French, Enevey was a labourer and Andrew a shantyman. Their neighbour was Luke Clouthier (37). According to family history, Sophie Turcotte married Luke Clouthier around 1869.

The Turcotte families in Petawawa in1891 consisted of Xavier (78), Sophie (59), and Rose (7), who was likely a granddaughter. Xavier was listed as a shantyman. Joseph Turcotte (26) and his wife Esther (22) lived with their two sons Joseph (3) and John Tho. (1). According to family history, Joseph Turcotte’s wife was Esther Hurteau of Mattawa. They married in Pembroke in 1887. A third Turcotte family was made up of Gilbert (32), Mary (19) and their 11 month-old son Gilbert. Noe Traversy (25) and his wife Mathilda lived next door to the Turcotte families with their young sons Noe (2) and Xavier (11 months). According to family history, Mathilda Traversy was a Turcotte, the sister of Sophie and Joseph. All of these people are recorded as being French Canadian.

Ten years later the Turcotte families were still in Petawawa when the 1901 census was taken. Sophie now 70 was living with her son John Turcotte (26) and his wife Victoria (16). A domestic Rosa Demers (18) lived with them. John Turcotte is likely the John enumerated at six years old in Petawawa in 1881. Xavier was not listed and had probably died prior to the 1901 census. The other Turcotte families were Joseph Turcotte (31) now shown with a wife named Mary (25), living with a daughter (3) and Bruno (1). The family of Gilbert Turcotte (40), Mary (28), their son Gilbert (11) and daughter Anna L. (9) were also enumerated. Two additional Turcotte families were that of Andrew and Mary Turcotte and the family of Thomas and Mary Turcotte.. Andrew (47) and Mary (26) were recorded with their children: Andrew (22), Zealdoh (18), Delphine (14), and Siriarie (7). Andrew Turcotte is likely the same man enumerated in 1881 with his first wife and their son Andrew, then 5 years old. Thomas (45) and Mary (46) had ten children: Delmes (29), Thomas (18), Alex (16), Albert (14), Rose (12), William (10), Camilia (9), Lily (6), Alphonso (3), and George (1). All of these people are recorded as being French Canadian.

According to family history, Sam Turcotte, a brother of Marie Alexina Turcotte,

...had his trap line in what is now called Algonquin Park. While checking his traps one day, he broke through the ice but continued to check his trap line and wound up with pneumonia and died.
Photos taken in Renfrew, Pembroke, Calgary and Winnipeg

I've recently acquired a number of old pictures but do not know who the people are. The photographers marks are: Thom, Winnipeg; A.L. Handford, Renfrew; Edwards & Harrison, Pembroke; Steele Co. Ltd, Winnipeg & Calgary. I'd love to put names to the faces. The pictures came from the home of L.Gordon Brisco and Margaret Atkinson (my paternal grandparents)of Admaston, Renfrew Co., Ontario. Only a few of the faces were known to my father. The photos are all mounted on cardboard and most are in excellent condition. There is also one tintype - again the person is unknown to me.

I believe the family names could be Atkinson, Brisco, Briscoe, Wright, Mayhew, Kosmack, McLean, Plaunt.

I need help in trying to identify these people.

I also have a card: In Loving Remberance of J. Leslie Howard, died April 3, 1904, aged 15 years 3 mon 10 days. If this person belongs in your family tree let me know and I'll send you a scanned image of the card.

My great grandparents, Martin Quinn (son of Robert Quinn and Mary Whelan, County Waterford, Ireland) and Ellen (Helene) Quinn of Lanark, Ontario, (daughter of Patrick Quinn and Mary Whelan of County Waterford ) were married on Aug. 25, 1845, at St. John the Baptist Church in Perth, Drummond Township in Lanark, Ontario.
I was told Martin Quinn died in Cormac, Ontario, about 1902, and Ellen Quinn died in Cormac, Ontario about 1903. Would anyone know how I might be able to find where they are buried in the Cormac area or any other info? I am also very interested in finding out what town in County Waterford, Ireland, Martin Quinn was born in. On the 1871 Canadian census it lists his birthday as Nov. 11, 1818, in Ireland.

Thanks so much for any help.
Irish Families in Renfrew County

I am doing research on a large group of Irish ancesters in Renfrew County. Most settled in the Eganville - Lake Dore - Opeongo areas. Some came to Canada as early as 1805, but most settled here after the 1840's.

My Bradley, Curry, Rowan, McDonough, McKelvie, Russell, Condon and Grogan ancestors were all Roman Catholic. The other family names I have listed were Protestant.

I have all the Founding Family series of books and other research material as well. I am looking now to expand my information on these families in Ireland and to make connections with other descendants of these families to continue building my tree.

I would love to hear from other descendants of these families. I am especially interested at the present time in putting together a family tree for our next Bradley - Curry family reunion however I enjoy digging up all my roots at any time!

R.C.O.C. picnic, Petawawa 1934

I have 2 old photos of the above picnic. One is a group shot of 50-100 people posed for a photograph. There looks to be a set of bleachers that some of the people are sitting on. The other is of people gathering for lunch - probably taken from a hill. There is an old truck with the letters RCS on the door and a pitched tent as well as people gathered around picnic tables.

I have no idea who is in the photo and why it was in the Darby family home in Massey Ontario. The families that I am researching in that area are Cadotte, Darby and Flockhart. I know that some of the Darby family were in Renfrew county at one time.

I don't know what the initials mean and hopefully someone will recognize them. Also is there a museum in the area that I could scan this in and forward it to. The photo is not much good to me unless I can identify someone.

I would be pleased to forward but I am in a rural area with no access to high speed internet so sending photos takes me ages.

Gail Darby

Hello. Am hoping I may be able to connect with some distant relatives this way. My Great Great Grandfather was George Livingston(e) born 10/9/1834 in Lanark County. The family settled in Renfrew County. George was married 3 times. First wife was Jean Bremner. Second Wife was Louisa Naismith and his 3rd wife was Jane Carswell. My great grandfather was James Livingston(e) from his second marriage. An only child of that marriage.

It's my understanding that James had 10 half siblings between his father's other two marriages. I've also seen where there is a cemetery in Admaston Twp that has several ancestors including Louisa Naismith and several Livingston's

We're trying to trace our family tree and am hoping by making contact with other distant family members maybe someone has the information we're looking for. I have my great great great grandfathers's name as William Livingston (George's father), he was born in Port on Monteith Scotland and came over to Canada in 1821 with his wife. George had 5 siblings

I think the name of William's father was Niel and his mother was Margaret Woodhouse. I have a date of birth for Margaret but only the year for Niel of 1769. I would really like to see if I can get the month or even date of birth and location of Niel

I've tried the Scottish online records but can't what I'm looking for.

Any assistance especially from any distant Livingston(e) relatives is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Suzanne Livingstone (Kent, WA)

I am searching for the church to contact if they list their religion as Church of Scotland. Also would like to know where I can get an obituary for William who died in 1901 and Mary(Busby) who died apx. 1871? Church records hopefully would relate babtism information for their 8 children: Mary Jane, James, William, Abraham, Robert, Elizebeth, and Hugh. Abraham married Jane Kinder and Mary Jane married Richard James of the Brudenell area.

Hello. Not sure if this is quite the right place but am trying to find out if I can obtain a copy of possible two books that are on the founding families of Renfrew County

One book is called A record of six Renfrew Families: Bremner Livingston(e) McFarlane, etc. by Linda Horyn

The second book I'm not sure which one I need because its a series of books but one of them is called "founding families of Admaston, Horton & Renfrew" by Carol Bennet

My family originally settled in Lanark County before moving into Grattan Twp (which shows in the 1851 census) but most are buried in the Admaston Protestant Cemetery, so I'm not sure if they would be in the book on Admaston, Horton & Renfrew or the book on Grattan which is also available

I've tried the following website but the email link doesnt work apparently
http://www3.sympatico.ca/juniper2/order.html

I'm hoping to obtain copies of one or both to find additional historical information about those who came before me

Thanks, Suzanne Livingstone

I have recently released a book titled-THE RASSLER FROM RENFREW-which deals with members of the Kasaboski Family from Horton Township. The book traces the arrival of Simon Kasaboski in Renfrew Ontario in 1882 and his subsequent marriage to Anastasia Cobus. Among their ten children were two who became professional wrestlers and while the book primarily traces the careers of Larry and Alex Kasaboski, it also looks at life in Renfrew County. The book may be of some value to historians and those interested in the Polish community in Renfrew County.More info can by obtained by e-mail-garyhoward77@hotmail.com

Looking for ancestors of subject. Horace R Macdonald emigrated to Michigan, U.S. at the age of about 7. Being a minor he was, presumably, accompanied by parents or guardians and perhaps siblings. Horace R. was reportedly an iligitimate child and it is unknown if the sumane Macdonald(note the small "d") was his mother's maiden name or his father's name. U.S. census information indicates that his mother was "Scotch" and his father was English. Perhaps, hence the surname Macdonald was his mothers name. The family still carries the name Macdonald and presumes to be Scotish.

He was reportedly born in Westmeath or environs of Renfrew County, Ontario. b. 1878, emigrated 1885, became a naturalized citizen at the age of 21 (Courthouse, Paw Paw, Van Buren, MI (Sep 29, 1899)Still seeking citizenship papers. Don't know what port of entry was used during immigration. Horace lived in MI suring entire balance of life, was twice married to Mary Morrison (4 issue)& Portia C. C. Unknown.

Acheson family of Westmeath Village, Refrew Co.

I am helping a friend research her Acheson family. Archibald Acheson operated a hotel in Westmeath from approximately 1870 to his death in either 1893 or 1894 (one date from the death record, the other from his tombstone in Westmeath United Church cemetery) The illustrated Atlas of Lanark and Renfrew counties 1880 said he was born in 1825 in Ireland and came to the area in 1846. He had sons Ira Mason, George, Alexander Morgan and Archibald Lloyd.
Would like to find out where he was born in Ireland (any references I have found just gave Ireland) and are there any pictures of his hotel which may have been called the Acheson House? Have not been able to find an obituary. The Pembroke paper for 1893 is missing and the date after his possible death date May 19, 1894 is missing.
Does anyone have access to listings of this cemetery?? I have found 2 listings for John Ledgerwood on the OFCA for this cemetery and am trying to determine (from a distance!) if either or both of these is an ancestor I am looking for. If anyone can let me know what is on the gravestones for these two listings I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
