born 1866 in Pembroke, son of CORNELIUS C GILLIS and MARY A MC NEIL who married in same area @ 1865 -Both Roman Catholic.
Hello,

I have found two marriage records recently that give the location of the marriage as St. John the Baptist Church, Brougham Township, Renfrew County.

Does anyone know where this church is/was? The marriages occurred in 1915 & 1916, and the parties were Catholic.

Thanks!

Elizabeth George

Looking for any information on the first wife of James Roberts of Horton Twp. She was born about 1832 and died about 1853, possibly in confinement. She had three daughters, Martha Ann, born Jan 23, 1849, Rebecca, born about 1852, and Elizabeth, born about 1853.
Martha Ann Roberts married William Burwell Eady on Jan 1, 1864 when she was just three weeks shy of her 15th birthday.
Elizabeth Roberts married Robert Airth Jamieson on May 19, 1871. She died in Grattan Twp on Oct 26, 1879 and on Apr 11, 1884 Jamieson took her younger sister, Rebecca Roberts for his second wife.
The marriage records of Martha Ann and Elizabeth identify their mother as Elizabeth George. The marriage record for Rebecca Roberts identifies her mother simply as Elizabeth Roberts.
Following the death of Elizabeth George, James Roberts married Hannah Knight, daughter of Thomas Knight and Mary Saunders of Horton. They remained on Horton Twp for a time, but later moved to the Haliburton area.
I am looking for the identity of Elizabeth George's parents, also where were James and Elizabeth at the time of the 1851/52 census.

Don McLaughlin
I located this information from to the Ontario Canada Deaths 1869-1938 Renfrew Division of South Algona.

I hope to find more family information from the article. I am searching for the family roots of Thomas Doolan b. abt 1833 in ? Ireland not sure when he entered Ontario Canada. I believe his mother was Mary Ryan and possibly his wife was Catherine.

I appreciate any suggestion and help with the Doolan family.

Thank you
Deb

Hi,

The census records are only as good as the person who answered the door that day. You will find a lot of incorrect birth dates, also, surnames and given names misspelled.

I will hunt around and see if I can find an obit for you. I didn't find one on ancestry.ca. You may have to email the library or genealogy society in that area.

Will get back to you.
Jane

Jane Thank you very much for your time, this family has been so confusing, the last names have been spelled different which I understand then I find different birth years with the parents first name to be correct but then the last name is missed spelled.

Do know of where I can search for obits on these family members that might lead to more family information and for the immigration year of 1836.

I do not reside in Canada so I am searching the computer.

Thank you so much

Hi! I don't know much about the Aubrys of NB but I am sure there would some connection between the families of NB and the families of Renfrew County. My history is basically about my mother and our family connections with the O'Breys /Aubrys of Renfrew County. I Have a copy of an Aubry Family history that covers a wider territory put together by a Raymond Aubry of Montreal, Quebec. It is quite thorough. It goes back to the marriage of Tec. Cornelius Aubrennan and Jean Chartier in the Quebec Cathedral in 1670. That's ten generations or more. I can be reached at 86 Heber St. Trenton,On. K8V 1N3 or 1-613-392-5978

Hi! Damas Paris and Laura Aubry and Jospeh Aubry and Linda Aubry of Douglas. Yes, your family would be related to my mother's side of the family. My mother came out of a family of O'Breys who settled in Admaston Twp. around 1851. The name was spelled differently because it became anglosized. A Louis Aubry/O'Brey and Rose Cousineau were the forebears coming out of St. Martin Quebec. The family really goes back ten generations to Quebec 1660-70s.to Tec. Cornelius Aubrennan and Jean Chartier who were married in 1870 Que. Cathedral. Our mother married Andrew Gilchrist in 1929 -her name was Mary O'Brey/Aubry, born 1904 to Louis O'Brey and Ellen Bradley of the Renfrew area.
Can someone from Renfrew Ontario tell me how to locate an immigration year for Patrick Doolan wife Mary Ryan who were from Tipperary Ireland.

I am guessing the year of immigration. Patrick Doolan and Mary Ryan had two children that were born in Tipperary Irland
Thomas Doolan b. 1833 Tipperary
Anne b. 1835 Tipperary

Patrick B. 1839 Fitzroy
Denis b. 1841 Fitzory
Catherine b. 1846 Fitzory
Francis b. 1850 Fitzory
I believe there was a John b. 1850

Because two of the children were born in Tiperary Ireland and their third chld being born 1839 in Fitzory I am guessing that Patrick and Mary with their two oldest children came to Canada about 1838.

Thank you
D

William and Nancy are buried in the Calvin United & Presbyterian cemetery in Pembroke, Ontario. I found their oldest son in the 1850 census with Nancy's parents. Next they are in Carleton, Ontario in 1861.
Great to hear from you. I remember Matthew as a baby. Gail was so excited she had to introduce him to everyone...it was really special. I live in Calgary and have been here since 1990. I guess it's home now.

The software automatically denotes any living person as private which is a little annoying. I have all of the family tree work that Sheila did in the 70's and have to enter it all in. I was incredibly naive when I started this 10 years ago...it was only going to take me a year to do.....right. A decade later and I'm still slogging away. Oh well, it keeps me busy! Thanks for getting in touch and I'll try to get moving on this. Say hi to everyone

Maretta. Mmchugh1010@gmail.com

I am a decendant of John Maloney (b. 1819, Ennis, County Clare, Ireland) married to Deborah Moriarty, (b. 1826 Limerick, County, Ireland). John and Deborah were married on May 9, 1847 in Mount St. Patrick. John died in 1905 and is apparently buried in MSP. Deborah went to Alberta and was buried in 1914 in Okotoks.

John arried in Canada in the mid 1840s.

I have had an interest in the family, but admitedly have not had much of an opportunity to delve into it nor do I have any knowledge of how to.

My grandmother Debora Annie Boudreau (nee Maloney) was born in 1880 and was buried n MST in 1948.) My father was John F. Boudreau.

Perhaps we might exchange information.

My address is as follows:

Faye Grutzmacher
137 Soudan Avenue
Toronto, Ontario
M4S 1V5

Emily Farrell is my maternal grandfather's sister, also my sister's Godmother. Her husbands name was Ellard. I dont know either are still alive, and the last time my sister saw them was in 1974 in Ottawa.

My grandfather's name was Reginald John Andrews, he died in 1993. He had a brother named Adam like his father. Adam senior died in an explosion in 1937. He was a tinsmith and plumber and also lived in Arnprior. Edith would have been his second marriage, his first wife died at age 40 in about 1924.

I was wondering if my grandfather was mentioned in the obituary.

John Williams

According to notes I have from my grandmother (Vera McEwen, nee Weston):

Sarah Howard married George Tucker and had children Joseph and Phoebe.

George Washington Tucker was Joseph and Phoebe Howard's great-grandfather. He was the first settler in the Westmeath area and came from Augusta, Maine. He was a United Empire Loyalist and built on the Ottawa river. He later gave land for the first school. His daughter-in-law, Rachel Stone (spouse of Rex) was the first school teacher.

Westmeath was settled before Pembroke and the people of Pembroke came to church in Westmeath. Georege Tucker (son of Rex) was very prominent in the community church and school.

I corresponded a few years ago with the wife of one of your Gordon cousins. As both are still living (and hopefully for many years) I won't mention names on the board, but she also told me that she could not get her husband's aunts to discuss the issue.
It is amazing the lengths to which people would go to avoid the issue of illegitimacy. Although Sam's birth was registered at the time as Samuel Watt Jeffrey, it seems that when he needed proof of his age many years later he did not ask the Department of Vital Statistics to search the records under that name. Instead, On April 2, 1934 his aunt, Margaret (Jeffrey) Olmstead declared before a Notary Public at Benito, Manitoba that Samuel Gordon was born in Ross Twp. on January 10, 1871, that the father was Hugh Gordon and the mother was Mary Jeffrey, and that she was present when the child was delivered by Mrs Gilbert Edmunds.
Of course it is always possible that he knew of the earlier registration, but that it was not acceptable for whatever purpose he needed it because the name did not match the name by which he was then known. I expect that his adoption by Hugh Gordon was a de facto adoption and that there was no documentary evidence to support the change of name from Samuel Watt Jeffrey to Samuel J. Gordon. Since by 1934 both Hugh and Mary had already died, this little white lie may have been seen as the only way to resolve the matter.

Don
Rosemary McCormick

I'm looking for information on my Great Aunt Rosemary McCormick (b. around 1912). I believe she died after 2006. Her father was John James McCormick a Mining Prospector (b. 1884 in Sudbury, Ontario to Joseph McCormick and Mary Rathwell), and her mother was Mary Ellen Gillies,My Great Grand Aunt, a Nurse (b. 1874 in Renfrew, Ontario to Patrick Gillies and Mary Alice McCrea).

We had regular contact with Rosemary McCormick who never married, until my Fathers passing in 2005. Apparently she was stricken with sudden Alzheimers and the Catholic Church in Toronto completely took over her affairs. My mother was in contact with the home she was placed in, and the Church, but they have never contacted us about her passing. She was going to pass all the family records on to us but never got around to it.

It appears all of her records of birth, baptism etc...are not on ancestry. She was a devote Catholic and would always send notices to my parents of prayer requests.

Any help is appreciated. We would love to know what has happened to Rosemary McCormick.

JoMckay

My name is Douglas Gordon and Sam Gordon was my grandfather. Sam's youngest son Garry (Colin Garfield Gordon) was my father. He was the youngest of 11 children.
Same died when Garry was only 17 years old and Garry died when I was only 11 years old. Because of this there is a lot of years gone buy and I never got to speak about my father's history with him.
I really enjoyed your input as it fills in a lot of holes. Some of what you covered was known or rumoured by my family but never spoken of. We had heard Watt or White and that his name was Samuel J. Gordon never Samuel Watt Jeffrey.
My mother Edythe Gordon passed away only a few years back (weeks short of her 90th birthday) and when she was asked about this she would say "leave the past in the past." Sam's wife Wilena Mcfadyen was also born out of wedlock. I guess things have not changed much over the years, they just didn't talk about it.
I have one photo of Hugh and Mary Jeffery and I also have several photos of Sam in his latter days with Wilena and the family as well as the charcoal photo you speak of.
Doug
