I think it's much more likely Catherine was the daughter of Malcolm & Catherine McEwen because this info was probably provided by the bride when she married. Info on the death reg'n would have been given by someone who might not know the truth, and who was probably in a a state of grief when they provided it.
Here's the reference to request a lookup of the 1871 census, which should include Catherine, seeing as she didn't marry until 1875.
