Josie this may help you. I hope so. Go to OGS page and find the 1861 Simcoe census page. Mush easier to work with if you actually bring up the page on McEwen on your computer. The records were prepared by the Simcoe Library.
http://www.ogs.on.ca/
Click onto the yellow box Ontario Genealogical Provincial Records Inex: This will take you top the census page.
Click onto the 1861 census which will take you to the OGSPI 1861 Census Menu and then click onto Mc under line #2 for
Algoma Renfrew "Simcoe'" then locate the page at:
Once you locate the page and bring up all the McEwen's they will be in columns in alphabetical order. Then by using the source column and the page # column you can actually put the entire families together. It appears to me that there is both a Malcolm and a Niel McEwen but your Catherine born 1848 will end up associated with Neil McEwen as her father.
If you find the page you will see what I mean.
I see the familes as such from the page: I will cut/paste the columns although you won't see them in column form.

MALCOLM MC EWEN daughter was born ij 1857!
You will also find a third MC EWEN FAMILY listed on page 36 of the 1861 census.
How you determine who is who relationship wise is more difficult. Maybe if you call the Simcoe Libray they can send you actual copies of the 1861 census.
Neil, Malcolm and John may be BROTHERS!
