I am looking for a connection for My Anna Matilda Schermerhorn who we understand married a John Knapp in Kingston, Ontario, Dec. 18, 1844. They later moved to Minesing, Ontario. Is there anyone who could check cemetery records or death records for me. I would like to know sources as I have never found any written evidence of her being there, only word of mouth. Frustrated in Ottawa...Jean

Neelands / Thompson

I have come across the name Neelands in my family search regarding the Thompson family from Creemore, Nottawasaga Township, Simcoe County. The family I am searching is Joseph Thompson and his wife, Charlotte Manning (my great-great grandparents).

I have been searching the Mad River Star / Creemore Star for news articles (birth, death, marriages, happenings, etc.) and came across an item in the 1894 Mad River Star/Creemore Star:

"Misses Kate and Arrie Neelands, daughters of the late Hamilton Neelands, Detroit, and aforetime reeve of Nottawasaga, are visiting at their uncle's, Mr. Jos. Thomson, 4th line south."

I believe that the Thompson mentioned in this notation was my great-great grandfather as he lived on the 4th line south. I have no information regarding any siblings of Joseph Thompson and can only assume that these two ladies were perhaps Joseph’s sister’s children.

Joseph’s parents names were William Thompson and Eliza Jane Boddy.

I have found Hamilton Neelands as well as his wife, Arabella (possibly Joseph’s sister) buried at the Creemore Union cemetery along with Hamilton’s father, some other Neelands (James, Joseph and Beatrice).

I thought I would put this out there to see if anyone else is aware of any Neelands and their possible relation to my relatives the Thompsons.

Thanks, in advance, for any help.
Scobie Family buried in Collingwood Cemetery

I will be traveling to the area later in the month, I have a copy of where my Johnson ancestors are buried in the Trinity Cemetery in Collingwood. Would someone be able to tell me if there are any Scobie's buried in the cemetery as well. While I am there I would like to swing by and get some photos of the head stones. Unfortunately my time will be limited while I am there, so I won't be able to do as much research as I would like.

Thanks

Carl

Probably came from County Antrim, Ireland about 1853 to Flos Township, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada. Have no history beyond their arrival in Canada and would like to trace it back further. May have only been in Ireland a short time and possibly came from Dundee area in Scotland but that is only an old family rumour.

Some attended Presbyterian service others Anglican. Believe Neil and desendants lived in Tecumseth Twp for 150 years or more. Need any guidance or information you may wish to give.

My Great Grandfather was Frank Valentine HILLMAN.
He was born 14th Feb 1879 in Nuthurst, Sussex, England Lived with his wife and 5 children in Sussex as a farm labourer then Butcher. he moved to Canada in 1911 leaving his wife and children behind (intent on sending for them later) They had one letter from him and nothing more.
He has been traced to the an entry on the 1911 census in Canada. Frank Hillman living in Orillia , Ontario. He is identified as a 32 year old, English born, Episcopalian (Church of England), married man who is boarding with the Drew family. His birth date is shown as February 1879 on the index but the original census record indicates 1889. The record shows that he arrived in Canada in 1911. It appears the Drew family had five boarders but he is the only one listed as married. His occupation is blank while all others are entered we assume he has just arrived on the scene. He is the only Frank Hillman in Ontario .
I have been unable to find his death at all, is there anyone with access to Orillia records that can help me find out what happened to him.

Trevor

In 1901 William and Corsie were living in Port Elgin operating a hotel with children William Duncan Campbell B 1882, Maggie Campbell b 1885 and James Bowie Symes Campbell b 1887.

I am looking for any additional information on this family group and a confirmed death and burial date for this Duncan and Margaret - Based on age, I suspect they died and were buried in Kincardine between 1881 and 1901.

This Duncan would be the father of Peter "Black Pete" Mclean Campbell who was the captain of several ships on the Georgian Bay including the "Northern Belle", "Manitoulin", "Waubuno", "Majestic" and several others.
I'm looking for anyone doing research on the family of Peter McAllister and Margaret Campbell or their many descendants. They were married on February 9 1881 in Collingwood. They were living in Collingwood at time of the 1901 census, it shows 9 of their children living with them, but I know there were more. I have a photo of their grave stone in West Nottawasaga Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Peter is a brother to my great grandfather Robert McAllister. I have been given some old photos from this area, but they have not been named. I'm hoping to find some one else researching these brothers and their sibblings, so I can identify the photos. Sibblings of Peter and Robert are as follows: Godfrey C McAllister, Margaret McAllister, Janet (Beauprie) (Caddo) McAllister, Mary (Bowes) McAllister, Sarah (Gartlan) McAllister, Ann (?) McAllister, Charles McAllister. Their Parents were Charles McAllister and Mary Currie.

Happy Searching
Roberta

Thomas McDowell, 1st Mayor of Palmerston, from Tecumseh

I'm interested in finding info on
Thomas McDowell, b. abt 1827-1828 in Ireland; d. sometime after 1907 when he was living with his daughter, Mrs. W.C. Frost (Isabella H. McDowell); m. Sarah Thompson.

He came to Canada at age 14, settling in Tecumseh/Tecumseth Township, Simcoe County, with his parents (father was Charles McDowell). He and his wife purchased Crown lots in Wallace Township, Perth County, in 1852, which later became the town of Palmerston, founded in 1874, where he was the first mayor. Palmerston was transferred from Perth to Wellington County in about 1881, I think. It built up around the Wellington, Grey, and Bruce Railroad station and yard.

There is a Thomas McDowell buried in Beeton United cemetery in Tecumseh, Simcoe County, but I don't know if it's the same one I'm after, (possibly buried with his parent?). Is there an online listing somewhere?

I'm interested in finding his tombstone (which is not in the Palmerston cemetery) to determine if it notes his native county in Ireland; Also, I would like to know if any other descendents exist.

Their 10 children:
- Isabella H., b. 1853, m. 1857 to R.H. Robinson
- William James, b. 1855, d. abt. 1880-1882 (my gggrandfather), m. in 1880 to Elizabeth Adams, b. 1859, Fergus, Wellington County, ON
- Mary Ann (or ?Margaret), b. 1857, m. 1878 to Wm. Christopher Frost/Forst/or Forest
- Sarah Jane, b.1858, m. 1878 to Alex Henry Hairell
- Samuel J., b.1860
- Charles J., b. 1862, d. March 1873 (I have a grisly account of his death at age 10 after getting caught in a belt in a stave factory)
- George A., b. 1864
- Allice, b. 1866
- Ruth, b. 1868
- Eliza, b. 1870
Benjamin Legate & Dorothy Delaney were both born in Ireland about 1825. It's likely they married there. They came to Canada in the late 1840's, early 1850's and settled in Mulmur (which has been either Simcoe or Dufferin Co) near the Rosemont area. They had a bunch of children including Robert, Mary Jane, Catherine, Thomas, Benjamin, William and Annie Victoria.

Benjamin died in a rather horrible accident Dec 1876.

Dorothy and the children left at home moved to Grey County. Dorothy died there. Both Dorothy and Benjamine were buried in Perm Methodist Cemetery in Mulmur.

These people may or may not belong to my tree. Anyone else know anything about them?

Hi, having a hard time finding out any information on this family.

John G Butterfield
Born 1911 in Orillia
Married Minnie Scales around 1930 (Prob. Toronto but could be Orillia)
They had 2 daughters, whom I believe were born in Orillia:
Marjorie Eleanor Butterfield, born February 18, 1932
Joan Margaret Butterfield, born December 18, 1933

Sometime around 1939/1940 John Butterfield moved to Toronto and raised his 2 daughters with the help of his unmarried sister. Apparently he was from a well-to-do family who could easily support him. The trail ends there.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Frances MacDonald born Lachapell related to Rawns and Crossons??

I am trying to find out more information on my husband's grandmother who died 1917 and is buried under her maiden name, E.P. Frances LaChapell, around Avonmore, Ontario.

She married Simon John MacDonald Nov 28, 1910 in York. On the marriage certificate her parents are given as Edward LaChapell and Louise or Louisa Rawn. Her name is given as Procelia(or perhaps Priscilla) Frances. I still don't know what the E. stands for. Her age at marriage is given as 24 so her birth year should be 1886.

I can not find a birth or death record for Frances. She had a brother Garfield. I can find a record of his birth to Edward Chappell, mother Louisa Rawn. There is also a birth and death record for Norman Chapelle with the mother as Leviza Rawn. The residence of the Chapelle's is given as Tiny Township Simcoe.

I can find the family on the 1901 census in Tiny, Simcoe East District 113, subdistrict n-3.
Edward Chapelle, Leviza Chapelle, Frances b. 1883, Elizabeth b. 1886, Garfield b. 1890. I believe this is the family of the E.P. Frances LaChapell that married Simon John but it is hard to prove it.

I cannot find any record of Louisa Rawn, birth, death or marriage. There is a connection to Andrew Rawn, Levissa Crosson, and William Rawn and Eva Hilts of Sunnidale. We have pictures of Garfield at graves in New Lowell. The stone reads Eva Hilts 1873 - 1933 Beloved wife of William M. Rawn. The other gravestone reads Andrew Rawn 1826 - 1914 and Levissa Crosson (her first name was Caroline) 1857 - 1925.

Levissa and Andrew are parents of William M. Rawn. These families seemed to reside in and around Sunnidale. The caption on the back of the picture of the Eva Hilts grave site reads "Garfield at the grave of his mother in New Lowell". Don't think it was his mother - are we missing another grave site photo?

Garfield married under Lachapelle 22 Jan 1912 in York. He married Jennie Sloan and his parents were given as Louisa Rawn and Edward Lachapelle. The spelling of this name constantly changes.

I can find a marriage for Elizabeth Eva Chapelle in Sunnidale to John Saundns Crosson 21 March 1906 with her parents given as Edward Chapelle and Levisa Rawn.

I can find Garfield Chappell on the 1911 census in Toronto rooming with David and Ida Crosson - children of Daniel and Rosina Crosson of Sherborne and McClintock Victoria North on the 1901 Census.

The only other piece of information I have on the LaChapelle's is a picture of Garfield and Charmaine - cousin to my husband's father, standing in front of a land office C. Anthony Real Estate L.O. 1647 and a dry cleaners beside it LL 7284

I think that Louisa Rawn was daughter to Levissa Crosson and Andrew Rawn and sister to William Rawn but so far have no evidence to back this up. Does anyone have any suggestions - any pieces of information relating to any of these people.

Thanks for reading this.
Debbie
newspapers for Mulmer/Mono in the 1870s

I am hoping that folks would know of any newspapers that would have covered the Mulmer area in the 1860s and 1870s. We are hoping to order microfilms and look for local information on the family of Thomas and Deborah Ann Pentland who lived there for about twenty years before going to Michigan.

Three of their children were baptized in the Wesleyan Methodist Church in 1871,in Kinloss. On the record, they are listed as being born in Mulmer.

His daughter Margaret married Thomas McCutcheon in 1878.

"Thomas McCutcheon, 24, farmer, Mono, Kinloss, s/o Henry & Sarah, married Margaret Jane Pentland, 17, Mono, Kinloss, d/o Thomas & Deborah Ann, witn: Isaac Pentland & Sarah Gillies, both of Kinloss, 12 July (1878) at Teeswater." Simco, 1878.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Roxanna

I see there is a William and a Margaret Hatton buried in the Alliston Union Cemetary. Is there a way to find out who these people were? Particularly Margaret. I want to know who her parents were and her dates of birth and death. I can't seem to locate these people in any census records. Some family history that I have says that Margaret was the daughter of William and Mary Beard (Beaird/Baird/Bard) of Tecumseth township but I can't locate anything anywhere that confirms that.

I am interested in the family of John Bacon and his wife Matilda Ashenhurst who appear in the 1881 census (indexed as Baken) in Flos, Simcoe COunty. Their children were Joshua b abt 1863, Margaret b abt 1867, RObert b about 1869, Sarah Jane b abt 1871, John b abt 1873, and Matilda b abt 1875.

John Sr was born in Uxbridge Township, Ontario County about 1837. His parents were Joshua Bacon and Margaret Mc Cauley.

He is in the Uxbridge census 1851 - 1871. The OGSPI shows John and Matilda in Medonte in 1891 census. I cannot find their death registrations on Ancestry.

I know that their son John remained in SImcoe and married Annie Bell and the family is in Midland in 1911. There is a JOhn mentioned in the Lakeview Cemetery Midland index.

I can't find the other children in the census or marriages for the daughters. DOes anyone have info on this family?

Joanna Waugh
I'm looking for a way to access census data between the above dates, to find out more about my grandfather's whereabouts after he appeared on the 1881 census as Tracy Gilbert, apparently adopted by the Thomas Walker family then living at Stanton in Mulmur twp. He shows up on the 1901 census as Tracey Walker, a domestic in the John Ewing family, also near Stanton. I can find no birth record for him, though I have confirmed that his birth father was Hezekiah Gilbert, birth mother Mary Anne McLean Beatty, daughter of Nancy Walker (Thomas Walker's sister)and William Hamilton Beatty.
