Sally Ann Campbell

My mother's father's parents were Peter Chesley Pitts and Sally Ann Campbell, married in Osnabruck Township on October 18, 1854. While some say they were married in a Lutheran Church, my searches find that they were married by Rev.John Howes at the Wesleyan Methodist Church and the witnesses were Robert Morgan and John W. Campbell. The latter may have been the husband of the groom's older sister, Julianne Pitts. I am guessing that he may have been a relative of the bride, too. Sally Ann Campbell was born on December 20, 1832 and died in 1912, according to info on her gravestone. My question is, who were her parents, brothers and sisters, grandparents, etc? Any information or clues would be much appreciated.

Need information on Eliza Ann Runions, born 30 Dec 1822, in Ontario , according to her B.C. death certificate, of 1918. I know she married William Marriott in about 1837, possibly in N.Y., but have been unable to confirm that. The people that have posted that do not know where the info. originated. Thought maybe she was from the Stormont area, as there are so many Runions there. I also know they lived in Stephen, Huron, Ontario, as that is where my ggrandfather was born in 1859. Help would be appreciated.

Are any of the following couples related somehow?

John McIntosh (1747-1827) & Catherine McPhail (had at least 6 daughters, ? sons)
Donald McIntosh & Mary Stuart (m.1829)
John McIntosh & Anna McPhail (m. 1829)
John McIntosh (son of John) & Mary McGillis (m. 1806)
John McIntosh & Mary McDonald
Angus McIntosh & Catherine McTavish
Angus McIntosh (blacksmith) & Mary McAuley
Donald McIntosh & (1) Catherine McDonald (2) Janet Fraser (m. 1826)
Alexander McIntosh & Catherine McDonald

I suspect I am somehow descended from the first couple and that some of the other couples are also descended (sons or grandsons) of the same.
Frances MacDonald (LaChapelle) death 1917

I posted the following in the Simcoe county forum to try and find out more information about my husband's grandmother Frances MacDonald of Avonmore. Thought I would repost in this forum as this is the county she resided in. So far I have looked through ancestry.ca records and LDS index microfilm and cannot find any record of Frances's death. Does anyone in this forum have any suggestions. I've thought about seeing if the Ontario Archives will lend the Red Deer, Alberta library microfilm of the Cornwall paper for 1917. Do you know if obituaries were commonly written and included in papers of that era? Again thanks for reading this and any suggestions as to how I should proceed are greatly appreciated.

When did the custom of burying women under their maiden names stop?

Debbie

I am trying to find out more information on my husband's grandmother who died 1917 and is buried under her maiden name, E.P. Frances LaChapelle Paul's Hill Cemetery

She married Simon John MacDonald Nov 28, 1910 in York. On the marriage certificate her parents are given as Edward LaChapell and Louise or Louisa Rawn. Her name is given as Procelia(or perhaps Priscilla) Frances. I still don't know what the E. stands for. Her age at marriage is given as 24 so her birth year should be 1886.

I can not find a birth or death record for Frances. She had a brother Garfield. I can find a record of his birth to Edward Chappell, mother Louisa Rawn. There is also a birth and death record for Norman Chapelle with the mother as Leviza Rawn. The residence of the Chapelle's is given as Tiny Township Simcoe.

I can find the family on the 1901 census in Tiny, Simcoe East District 113, subdistrict n-3.
Edward Chapelle, Leviza Chapelle, Frances b. 1883, Elizabeth b. 1886, Garfield b. 1890. I believe this is the family of the E.P. Frances LaChapell that married Simon John but it is hard to prove it.

I cannot find any record of Louisa Rawn, birth, death or marriage. There is a connection to Andrew Rawn, Levissa Crosson, and William Rawn and Eva Hilts of Sunnidale. We have pictures of Garfield at graves in New Lowell. The stone reads Eva Hilts 1873 - 1933 Beloved wife of William M. Rawn. The other gravestone reads Andrew Rawn 1826 - 1914 and Levissa Crosson (her first name was Caroline) 1857 - 1925.

Levissa and Andrew are parents of William M. Rawn. These families seemed to reside in and around Sunnidale. The caption on the back of the picture of the Eva Hilts grave site reads "Garfield at the grave of his mother in New Lowell". Don't think it was his mother - are we missing another grave site photo?

Garfield married under Lachapelle 22 Jan 1912 in York. He married Jennie Sloan and his parents were given as Louisa Rawn and Edward Lachapelle. The spelling of this name constantly changes.

I can find a marriage for Elizabeth Eva Chapelle in Sunnidale to John Saundns Crosson 21 March 1906 with her parents given as Edward Chapelle and Levisa Rawn.

I can find Garfield Chappell on the 1911 census in Toronto rooming with David and Ida Crosson - children of Daniel and Rosina Crosson of Sherborne and McClintock Victoria North on the 1901 Census.

The only other piece of information I have on the LaChapelle's is a picture of Garfield and Charmaine - cousin to my husband's father, standing in front of a land office C. Anthony Real Estate L.O. 1647 and a dry cleaners beside it LL 7284

I think that Louisa Rawn was daughter to Levissa Crosson and Andrew Rawn and sister to William Rawn but so far have no evidence to back this up. Does anyone have any suggestions - any pieces of information relating to any of these people.

Thanks for reading this.
Debbie
Cline / Myers / Alguire / Gallinger / Snetsinger / Eastman (and others!) of Cornwall, Ontario, CANADA & NY state: Family Photos

My mom (Lois Barron, nee EASTMAN) inherited a family photo album from her grandmother, Rebecca Catherine Eastman (nee Cline) of Cornwall, Ontario, CANADA. There are very old photos in this fragile album including some tin-type and others, mostly taken a photo studio in Goveneur, New York. Most of these people in the photos are 'mystery ancestors' (we have no idea who they are, other than a few with various things written on the backs such as "M/Nellie & Grace Meyers" on one, "to aunt Beckey with love from Thompey" (I'm assuming 'Beckey' was Rebecca) on another, "Grandma Dearest from Harold" on a third, and "Emerson and May" on a fourth. I have scanned all these photos (as well as known photos of my ancestors) and posted them on webshots:http://community.webshots.com/album/220883556qyPqQY/0
If you have any clue as to who any of the people in these pictures are, please let me know!!!
My mother's grandmother, Rebecca Catherine Eastman (nee Cline) was born in Cornwall, Ontario, CANADA abt 1878 and married Alva Solomon EASTMAN. She was the daughter of Samuel & Harriet CLINE (nee HAMILTON) of Cornwall. Samuel Cline was was the son of Michael CLINE (b.1789 in Cornwall) & Mary GALLINGER of Cornwall. Michael Sr.'s parents were Michael CLINE (b.1746 in GERMANY) and Catherine VICK who were Loyalists living in New York state who came to Cornwall, Ontario, CANADA during/after the American Revolution. Mary Gallinger’s parents were (Johann) Michael GALLINGER & Agatha Alida ADY/ADE, they were loyalists as well.
My email address' are rothycat@hotmail.com and maggie.barron@elections.ca <mailto:maggie.barron@elections.ca>

I am looking for the families that might be willing to share information on the sons and daughters of Lucinda Smith Antoine. She had 13 sons and 5 daughters. Sons names were Alex, Sam, Will, Eckhorn, Stanley, Frank, John, Harry, Linn and Jim. I think that Frank Antoine lived in Waddington at one time. The three daughters that I have names of are Mrs. Andrew O'Reilly of Watertown, New York, Mrs. Edgar Fetterly of Barnhart Island and Mrs. Henry Layo of Massena. I am the grand daughter in law of Delilah (Henry) Layo and have a lot of information to share. But I would like to hear from some of the rest of the family. Margaret Disotell of Massena is the granddaughter of Mrs Fetterly and hope she will be willing to share the information she has on her Mom and their family. Also does anyone know the name of Mr. Antoine. I have Antoine Langais Pet (Tete) from some news that I have been able to find. Mrs. Antoine was burined in Moulinettte Methodist Church Cemetery. Any help I can get to look up this information myself I would appreciate. I am located just across the river from Morrisburg Ontario so a trip to Canada is no problem.

Sorry for the double entry. I hit the wrong key. My GGG-Grandfather, James RUNNIONS was the son of Henry & Elizabeth YOUNG RUNNIONS. Elizabeth RUNNIONS, daughter of James Young according to land grant has O.C. and U.E.L. dates that are the same in different publications. What if difference is there between O. C. and U.E.L. designations? In "The Loyalists of Ontario" by William D. Reid his entry for James YOUNG including "Elizabeth, OC 13 Mar 1812, m. Henry RUNNIONS of Cornwall. O.C. 19 December 1833." Does the second date of 19 Dec 1833 refer to Henry or Elizabeth? Thank you!

Further, the Johnstone family which settled within the vicinity of Crysler, Ontario, migrated from Ireland, although the family probably originated in Dumfriesshire.

My great grandfather, Christopher Johnstone, d. 1911, who settled east of Ormond, Ontario, was not related to the Johnstone family which settled at Crysler(clerks often 'dropped' the 'e'), or to many of the 'other' Irish Johnstons who settled in Dundas County.. My gt grandfather was the nephew of Dr. William Johnstone(buried North Lunenburg)brother to James Johnstone(buried Hoddam graveyard Ecclefechan, my gtgt)both being born at Axeltreewell Farm, Dumfriesshire(Ecclefechan), sons of George Johnstone(Dec. 23, 1737-d May 17 1817==Will) and his third wife, Grizel Irving(b 1749-d 1800)buried Hoddam graveyard(Ecclefechan).Dumfriesshire.. George was the son of John Johnstone(at one time a provost) of the town of Annan, buried in old Annan Cemetery. My gtgt grandfather, James Johnstone, was married to Mary Irving(b 1796) dau. of John Irving.(Hoddam)

These Johnstone families very often had similar 'first' names...

Margaret Cameron
Long Sault, Ontario

Any and all information about her family would be helpful, because I have none !!!! She married Harvey Shuttle in St. Albans, Vermont in 1900. The Shuttles are another brick wall I have hit. He came from Quebec where his grandfather's name was Shettle on the 1851 census. Thanks for your time.

Researching the family of Donald Grant b. abt. 1794 Scotland and Mary McMillan, b. abt. 1805 Ontario daughter of John McMillan (Roman John) and Catherine McMillan (Callich). I've found this couple in the '51 census (Stormont) with nine children (based on age gaps there were likely more). Donald was enumerated as Church of Scotland, Mary was RC but the children were enumerated (and possibly raised) as Church of Scotland. I've also found Mary in the '81 census (Roxborough, Stormont, Ontario) as a widow living with her daughter Ann who married a Martin Sargeant (b. abt 1850, USA).

If any one has compiled descendant information for Donald and Mary, I would be interested in hearing from you.

ranaldthecalf@comcast.net

Roach(Roche)family Cornwall area

My name is Philip Roach jr.and I grew up in Brasher Falls,New York across the border from Cornwall,Ontario.I am researching my family history in the Cornwall area and it goes like this.My original Roche that came to the area was John Roche my ggg grandfather from Ireland. He married Elizabeth Taillon on 1/7/1834 in ST.Andrews near Cornwall the church was ST.Andrews parish. They had eleven children,Sarah,Mary,Francis,Thomas,Eliza,Elizabeth,John jr.,Alexander,Joseph,Katherine and William my gg grandfather.William married twice the first wife was Ann MCdonald and they had two girls Elizabeth and Ann.Ann MCdonald I believe then died and William remarried to Eliza ann Smith and they had nine more children William jr.,John,Herbert,Charles,Bessie,Michael,George,Jerry and my g grandmother Matilda.Sometime around 1880 William and Eliza ann and all their children moved to the Brasher Falls,New York area where there is still Roach families living today. If any of this looks familier please write back to me,I know that the many Roach families living in the Cornwall area today have to be from the same line.Thank You Philip Roach jr.
