John Island is an island located off the north shore of Lake Huron, Georgian Bay area. It is near the western most tip of Manitoulin Island. It accessed via a dock in Cutler on the Serpent River First Nation, which is between Espanola and Spanish, so somewhat west of Sudbury. There was once a sawmill there and evidence of it's existence is still there. Technically I think it is called Little John Island as there is also a larger John Island, but the sawmill and camp were on the smaller one. Currently John Island camp is run by the Sudbury YMCA, mostly as a kids camp (not just special needs), but they also do Family camp, retreats, and it can be rented privately. They have an Open House at the end of June every summer if you wanted to visit it ever. The YMCA may have some history of the island available. They are always interested in hearing about it's stories, you should contact them. They also have a Facebook page on which you could see some photos of it's use as a camp.
