I'm replying to a three year old post so I doubt I doubt I'll have any luck, but if it can be of any help...my grandfather was Lloyd, and he was the owner of the Chaples department store in thunder bay. He had three sons and one of them is my father Charles, who currently resides with me in Ottawa, Ontario.

The George you mentioned is my Uncle George Mutton who lived in Upsala, Ontario. He's the only one to move from Manitoba to Ontario

My aunt Eva died when was quite young (she had terrible asthma)and didn't have any children. Aunt Clara lived to a good age and died where she had taught for so many years, in Swan River Manitoba. Dad lived in Winnipeg and died of cancer there in 1980.

Good morning, all:

I have just started a new web page for history and genealogy in the 1800's in the Fort William and Port Arthur area.

If you have ancestors who were in this area before about 1910, or are interested in local historical subjects, feel free to submit material (including photographs) to the web site. You can have your own web page(s) to document your early family history, etc.

The site includes all of those persons enumerated in the 1881 census of Fort William and Port Arthur, for starters.

The address is www.bytown.net/fortwilliamcensus1881.htm .

Al Lewis

Your line has jumped a generation of mine. Martha was born 28 Jan 1865 and Mary Emily was born 23 Sep 1876. Martha was married in 1889 & Mary Emily was married in 1898. My mother, Elsie Gerdis was born in 1902.

I looked up the birth records at Ancestory.ca & found them all except one. The records were not complete but now I have figured out how to get the complete record & will go back & get them. Here are the dates, etc. They are not in order.

Vera born 1 Sep 1895 in Sombra Tp Lambton Co
Dewie born 6 May 1897 [didn't find birth record]but I have him born in Sombra Tp Bothwell Co.
My mom and dad (Alex McLeish) attended the funeral for my Grandmother Vera. Dad has passed away but Mom said that it was definitely in Fort William and was at a funeral home, not a church. I imagine Uncle Dewey would have been buried in Fort William too.

I have Gramma's place of birth as Lambton County in Southern Ontario, not in Dryden. I know she lived in Dryden because that's where my dad was born. I also have Fern and Martha being born in Lambton County, Jessie on Manitoulin Island, and Don in Parry Sound. I haven't found Aunt Eliza's place of birth but assume it could be Lambton.

Does any of this agree with what you have found?

So, your grandmother was the young sister of Martha Babcock, my great grandmother??

hello, i'm looking for anyone out there with the same surname as me. i'm told there are possibly some people living in thunder bay, canada. descendants of sarah hicketts, (not her maiden name), she lived in Eden Vale, Westbury, WILTS, England. i am told it is possible that one of her sons moved to canada by name of joe, i guess this would have been around the time of ww2.
if you have any information on any of my ancestors or are connected to my family i would be very pleased to hear from you via e-mail.

I am a grandson of Ethel's brother, Clarence Edmund Coombes. Ethel and Wilbert had no children. They ran a furniture store in Toronto for many years. Ethel had another brother, Nelson. I am presently assisting one of Nelson's granddaughters in putting together a family tree. She has been able to track the Coombes (some spell it Coombs) family back to the Isle of Wight. Ethel was a Coombes.

My source that knew the Salmon Arm Felix said that Felix came from Ontario and that he had worked in the woods there. As far as we know there were no other members of his family here.

Do you know from where in Finland the families originated? A search on Hiski could be made if we knew that location. Another possibility is obtaining a copy of his death certificate from B.C.Archives. There may be parents listed there and maybe a location of birth.

Richard

He is listed in the 1911 census in Port Arthur.
What I am looking for is where he went from here. I am wondering if he is a brother to my Grandfather George Kotchan and his brother Johan Kotchan. Both brothers worked in Fort William, which I believe is around the same area.
Hi,

I live in Thunder Bay & my mother's maiden name was Hicketts. There is a Joseph Hicketts born about 1793 in our family tree. He was married to a Sarah Cliff. They had a son Joseph, born about 1826. Joseph, born in 1793 had a brother Matthew who would have been my great, great, great grandfather. I have a Kay Hicketts listed in my family tree who is or was married to John Hyde. Would that be you? I don't have any dates for Kay. If we are related I would love to correspond & be able to trade family tree information with you.
Dave
Thanks for that. I wonder if the headstone guy got paid? Jobez Coombs & Elizabeth Maude Coombs (Taylor) were my great grandparents. Isaac, I believe was a brother and Charles may have been a son. I have a birth record for Charles but had always wondered what happened to him. I never met, and my grandfather never spoke of a brother Charles.
Thanks again

John Robinson of Fort William

Hello;

I am looking for any information on a John Robinson who was an engineer for the railroad living in Fort William around 1906. He was actually born John Hicks between 1850-1860 in or around Oshawa to parents, Eliza Burr and Richard Hicks. When Richard died John was adopted by a Robinson family and that's all the information I have, other than he may have had a son named Frank. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Laura in BC

Thankyou very much for your reply, I appreciate it! Unfortunatly I don't think those could be right. John Robinson's birth mother remarried in November of 1861 to Joseph Leaman (Lemming) and of the three children her and Richard Hicks had, I've found William Henry lving with his Grandparents James and Hannah Burr in East Whitby twp on the 1861 census (Family lore says William Henry went to live with his grandparents for awhile after his father Richard Hicks died), so with that in mind John Robinson would have been at least concieved before August 1861. I can't find Eliza and Elizabeth Ann on the 1861 census' anywhere but most likely they would have been in the Oshawa area and John would have been taken in by the Robinsons by then (or not yet quite born). By 1871 William Henry and Elizabeth Ann were with their Mother and her new Husband in Cartwright, Durham West. I have been unable to locate Richard and Eliza Hicks on the 1851 census (they married in 1850) but they very likely could have been living in Oshawa town and the census for 1851 is missing for Oshawa. William Henry was born in Oshawa 3 Feb 1856, Elizabeth Ann about 1857 but since I haven't be able to find birth records for the kids I don't know if John was older or younger than his birth siblings. Any suggestions on where I might go from here to unravel this mystery?

Laura in BC

Hi;

I don't think the following one could be the right family, I believe I found them on a later census so I've ruled them out:

HICKS 1851 census @ca.on.244 page 299 line 19
@ca.on.ontario_county. whitby_township film C11742 lds0349229
19 HICKS Richard m 30 Eng Bible_Christian labourer married
20 HICKS {?} Eliza f 20 Ont Bible_Christian married
21 HICKS Margaret f 6 Ont Bible_Christian
22 HICKS Thomas m 5 Ont Bible_Christian
23 HOSKINS Susana f 16 Eng Bible_Christian servant
Whitby in OGSPI by ogs Durham Region Branch
Margaret & Thomas may not have belonged to Eliza. She would only have been 14 when Margaret was born.

The others are all for sure the correct people. It looks like I'll just have to leave poor ole John Robinson to himself. He would be my ggrandfather's brother so it would have been nice to be able to track him, but I just haven't got enough information...yet. I'm still looking for birth records of some sort for all three kids, so there's still hope!

Thanks ever so much for your help!
Laura in BC
Thanks Bev, glad the site was useful for you. We have about 20 volunteers working hard finishing up the obituaries for the FW DTJ 1930-39 (will be online in April 2009) and have started the 1940s. Since we are just indexing the basic information, the newspaper notices on microfilm might provide more information for your family history.
It is sometimes easier to find information over 100 years old, which is one of the reasons why I wanted to see the index online. I wish other communities would do similiar projects (hint, hint).

Regards,

Dave Nicholson
Thunder Bay, ON
http://my.tbaytel.net/pafwinfo
You might want to contact the Brodie Library via their reference questions or by phone (contact info at www.tbpl.ca) as she might be listed in their local history index with a possible reference to a newspaper article in the Fort William Times-Journal.

Or contact the Thunder Bay Museum at info@thunderbaymuseum.com
(site: www.thunderbaymuseum.com) as they have many clipping files that are not listed on their web site.

Regards,

Dave Nicholson
Thunder Bay, ON
http://my.tbaytel.net/pafwinfo
