STUTT
Trying to find death record for Edward Stutt (aka Royal Edward Stutt).
Edward Stutt b. 13 Dec. 1903, York County, married Gwendolyn Maud Mary Knott, 21 Jan 1924 in York County, divorced 1951 in York County.
Edward was alleged to have been in Toronto in 1951 and possibly up to 1956. No record has been found in Ontario death registrations for the name Edward Stutt.
Edward appears to have been the youngest child of Andrew Stutt and Jane Caroline Hunter. Edward had 12 siblings: Archibald, Margaret, William Andrew, Mary Jane, Charles, Ralph, Arabella, Elizabeth, John, Sarah A., Susan, Irwin. All the children appear to have been born in Canada and I assume Toronto, Ontario since Andrew & Jane Stutt were married in Toronto in 1882. Both parents, Andrew & Jane, died in Weston, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Regards,
Paul Caverly
I am atempting to track down the members of the following family. I have very little to go on. I have information on Minnie (also known as "Carrie") R. Hernden (the spelling may be different), born 1878-1881 in Toronto, Canada. She had a sister, Ida, who was born 1865 in Canada. Their parents may have been Reuben Hernden, born in New York, and Polly Jane Merrill, born in England.

I am looking for a starting point to figure out Minnie's family. She married Victor W. East in 1901 in Chicago.

Thank you for any help
C. East

I am searching for the Lord Photo (company) 386 1/2 Yonge Street Toronto. How long were they in business?? A series of unidentified black and white pictures of people wearing clothing that appears to be the era of the 1890's are the puzzle. A time line of this business may help to put the people in context.
Any information about the owner, the length of time the business operated or what might have happened to the negatives and business records would be sincerely appreciated. Since Street numbers in Toronto have changed from time to time, an advertisement or promotion of the company may be misleading as to the location of the studio.
I'm hoping something may turn up giving Yonge Street near ?
whatever the cross street would be. Thank you LH

This 6 month old little girl is buried in my family's plot in Prospect Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario. My family's story is that she and her parents were neighbours of my Great Grandparents and when Helen died they couldn't afford to bury her. That's how she ended up in the plot. At the time my Great Grandparents lived on Dovercourt Road in Toronto, Ontario. I thought if someone was looking for her they might not know where to look! I'd like for her family to know where she is.

Looking for any information on George Stewart who died in Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada on 8 February 1923 and was born possibly between the years 1850-1860 in Scotland or England-Parents might have been Joseph Stewart and Agnes McMillian (Spelling). I believe he's related to our Grandmother-Mary (Stewart) Young. The Young's came to Canada, New Brunswick-from Liverpool, England in the year 1902.
Ashcroft of Burtonwood area

Hello Brad, I dont know whether you have received my recent communication with regard to your request about " John Ashcroft" of Burtonwood.[7.06.08] I replied that I am the great great grand daughter of John Ashcroft who was a shoemaker from Burtonwood. He was born in 1799 and his wife was Margaret b 1806.One of their children was James b 1846, and 1881 rcords show that John was at that time living with James, his wife Mary, and their 4 chldren in Newton le Willows Lancashire He was then a widower. James had a son called Richard who married Lilian Mabel Partington [my Grandmother] They had 4 children, one of whom was my father Richard Stanley Ashcoft b 14/11/1911. I do know that the family had relatives in Canada and my Grandmother was in touch with them for years. I will try and locate one of the letters that she received which were passed on to my Father when she died in 1976, and which I inherited when he died in 1984. It would be great to find out if we are from the same branch of the "Ashcroft" clan. Pleas reply if you think that we are and I will let you have a lot more detail Thanks a lot Judith A Southern nee Ashcroft.

George Post and Elizabeth Donaldson

George was probably the son of Peter Post and Amelia Liddell, born 6 JUne 1857 in Ontario (exact place unknown), and Elizabeth was the daughter of John Donaldson and Agnes Thornton, born 25 April 1857 in Ontario, probably in Thurlow Township, Hastings County.

They were married in 1885 (exact date and place unknown) and are reported to have had three children; Agnes Amelia, born 1886 (exact date and place unknown) and died 15 April 1893 in Toronto; James (birth and death date unknown); Frances, born 31 December 1896 (place unknown), married George Bennett (date, place offspring and death details all unknown) and died in 1985 (place and exact date unknown).

I have George and Elizabeth separately in the 1881 and together in the 1901 and 1911 Census, with Frances in the 1901 and 1911 census.

Elizabeth died in Toronto on 5 December 1915 and George died, also in Toronto, on 24 March 1916.

1. How would I get the 1891 census record?

2. How might I get birth certificates for Agnes Amelia, James and Frances?

3. When and where did James die?

4. Does anyone know anything more about the Poste and Bennett families? (I have plenty of information about the Donaldsons.)

WEBB - Searching for any Canadian or USA records for Joseph charles Webb - born Risbridge, Suffolk ,England, UK in 1869.

Searching desperately for any Canadian or USA records for Joseph charles Webb - born Risbridge, Suffolk ,England, UK in 1869.

father was Nathan Webb ,mother was Jemmima Hinds of suffolk ,UK.

Siblings were :
Arthur Webb born 1859
Emma Webb born 1862
susan Webb born 1864
Harry Webb born 1867
Alfred F Webb born 1876

He was located on the 1891 census in Suffolk, England UK.

We know sometime after 1891 he emigrated to Canada ,we think to Toronto ,where he married and had children. He then returned back to the UK some years later leaving his children and wife in Canada. He started a new family in the UK and had more children. His first child born here in the UK after his return was in 1919. His wife in canada died some years later and two of his children ( females) from Canada came to the UK to notify Joseph of her death & to tell him he was free to marry again.

So any marriage or children born in Canada would be somewhere between 1891 & 1919

Going by dates any children of Joseph in canada are probably deceased. We would be glad of any information on any desendants of those children or relatives.

Henry G. Rutledge - Missing family member?

Recent research has pointed to the existence of a Henry G. Rutledge as a sibling of my great-grandfather, Marvin Rutledge. But I can't confirm this. His marriage record lists William and Eliza Rutledge as his parents which coincides with my g-g-grandparents. Would have been born about 1840 in Co. Tyrone Ireland. Married Louisa James in 1865. City directories from the 1870's list him as a "clerk" and as a "hardware merchant." If anyone can shed light on a possible connection, I'd love to hear.

My great grandmother Amelia Larbalestier emigrated in 1914 to St John N.B. with her daughter Laura Lilian Fox and grandson Stanley Fox born c 1911. All were born in St Helier, Channel Islands. They lived in Toronto. Laura worked as a saleslady at Eatons Department Store. She died in May 1917 and was buried in Prospect Cemetery. Her mother, Amelia, died July 1920. Therefore, Stanley's mother died when he was 6 and his grandmother when he was 9. I have no knowledge of his father other than he was George Stanley Fox born c 1887 at St Ouen Channel Islands. Any descendants or knowledge of Stanley Fox would be appreciated.

lawyer Andrew Steele please

Hello, I am looking for some information on a gentleman named Andrew Mcpherson Chessman Steele who died in 1893 somewhere in Toronto at the age of 41. It states on his death reg. that he was a lawyer. Does anyone know if there would be a record of his legal degree? Perhaps Osgoode Hall? I get the feeling he may have been a man of some stature in the area. His wife, Ida May Jerome, would remarry only 6 months later in Toronto to Charles James Bowell, a customs officer, and son of Sir Mackenzie Bowell, former PM. Andrew is buried somewhere in Toronto but I'me not sure where. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Tom

Is it possible for someone to take a trip to the Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery to take a photo of a grave stone, maybe two.

I am interested in a James McKenzie who died on 26th July 1957. I have his obit which states it was Trull Funeral Home who were dealing with the burial at the Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.

The other stone is in plot 323 A2 and A3 and the name is Jenny and Jack Lindfield. They are in the Garden of the Last Supper. Jenny died on 28th February 1994 and Jack on 29th March 1981.

I am hoping that all the graves may be together.

Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Regards

Keith

On a document I found one daughter was born in Hamburg Avenue, York County. Their parents were George Stephenson (sometimes under Tinson - I don't know why?) and his wife was Margaret Jessie. Does anyone have any records or could point me in the right direction of where to look on web etc?? Many thanks.

Also a professonal gambler and really apparently had a very nice personality. Well John apparently had the OBrien and or the Zeagman family album. This will be Toronto Canada mostly

Photographers in the Toronto area

I have two photos that I believe are my great great great grandparents, Mathew and Hana (Butts) Forster. They were mailed to their daughter in Iowa. Unfortunately there is no postmark on them but the name, I L Cady is on the back of each of them. I'm assuming that this is the photographer's name.

Mathew was born in 1809, I'm not sure when he died. Hanah was born in 1818 and died in 1883. Based on that, my guess is the photos were taken in the 1870s as they both look quite old. To see copies of them, go to http://www.copelan.net/familytree/persons/180.html

If anyone can confirm that a Cady was a photographer in the Toronto area around that time, it would be greatly appreciated.

Lyle

His grave was paid for as a single grave. I have now been told that a Sarah Oldham is buried in the same grave. She may well be the person that my father went to live with.
Hi,
I hope someone can help me. I have a cousin who is coming to Ontario in August. She wants to visit the Mattice Burying Ground. All I can find on it is this (this is from the Ontario Archives site)

Mattice Family Burying Ground, Con. B, Lot 22 Ontario Hospital Cemetery (Mimico), Broken Front, Lots 5 / 6

It is a little confusing as I am not sure if the burying ground is on the site of the Ontario Hospital Cemetery or at this Con B. Lot 22 and where is the world is that by today’s standards? It seems that it is quite an old cemetery.
I want to be able to tell her or take her there. Can anyone help me with this?
Thank you.

I have a picture taken at a photo studio in Ontario about 1910 of my mother and a woman friend dressed in mens' clothing. I would love to know the story surrounding this picture. Was there a "women's movement" of some sort then--was there a trend to be photographed clowning around? My parents, married in 1906, lived in St. Thomas from about 1910 to 1926. Is there a historian on this list who could enlighten me. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. --Helen

While in Canada he was here without his family (wife and kids).
At this time he would be 60 - 65 years of age, 5'8 -5'10.
There is a possibility that he may have lived on either Grace or Shaw street in Toronto.
William Lee Johnson and Elizabeth Mary Johnson

My name is John D Johnson and I am writing from Anglesey, N. Wales GB. I am looking for any information on William Lee Johnson (born 1st May 1882, in Leigh Lancashire, England) and his wife Elizabeth Mary Johnson (all details of this lady are unknown to me). William was my Great Grandfather he left the UK in or around 1910 and lived in the Troronto City area, the addresses I have to date are 42, St Clarens Ave in 1915, I think he and his wife where in digs at that time, and Pape Ave, Toronoto City, Ward 4. I have found out that William Lee died on the 8th August 1952 in Sunnybrook Hospital, of Cancer and is buried in Mt. Hope RC Cemetery, Toronto. Elizabeth is believed to have stayed on Pape Ave,(exact address unknown to me) but for how long I do not know, where she is buried I cannot find out, did they have any offspring and are any of their family living today. Can anyone in the Gerrard part of the City of Toronto remember these people or give me any leads. If you can help please email me at Hapsbergjohn@aol.com. Thank you very much for reading this. John J Ynys Mon.

Harry and Llyod Benson born Winnipeg to Gertrude and William

Hi, I'm trying to find relatives/descendants of Harry and Lloyd Benson born in Winnipeg to Gertrude Churchill Benson and her 2nd or 3rd cousin William Benson. Gertrude was the daughter of Tryphena Benson (nee Churchill) daughter of Ezra Churchill of Portugal Cove, Newfoundland, my step-ggrandfather. Tryphena died in 1929, Winnipeg. She m. Eli Benson originally from Grates Cove, Nfld. and they had four children, the last child was William Curtis Benson who was born after his father's death in 1899, Eli was 36 years of age and is buried in the General Protestant Cemetary in St. John's, Newfoundland. Gertrude and William had two sons Harry and Lloyd Benson, born in Manitoba, and after Gertrude's death in Manitoba, William moved back to Nfld., I believe he remarried there and died in 1964, going with the Evening Telegram newspaper account in Nfld. Gertrude's mother, Tryphena Churchill, born in Portugal Cove, had 4 sisters, Amelia, Mary Ann (Annie) of Philadelphia, Lydia, Matilda (she m. a Hector Curtis in Nfld. and after Hector's death Matilda moved to Philly to live with her sister Mary Ann or Annie Paul, wife of William D. Paul of Philly. I believe Harry Benson and Lloyd both moved to Ontario and one was a doctor. Their grandmother Tryphena was my grandfather's step-sisters. Ezra Churchill of Portugal Cove m. an Unknown Picco lady and after her death he remarried to my ggrandmother Sarah Ann Moulton. She was m. firstly to a James Gillett of Exploits, Notre Dame Bay, and had my grandfather, James Gillett, born Dec. 23rd, 1868, then she m. Ezra Churchill, merchant of Portugal Cove. I have managed to find 4 of Ezra's children by his first marriage, but I would like to find Lydia, as when my grandfather, James Gillett/Gillott m. in Toronto in 1892 one of the witnesses is a Lydia Churchill, so I'm guessing that was his step-sister. Any help would be greatly appreciated, sincerely Denise MacDonald, Williams Lake, B.C.

I am looking for the death information about the wife of George Power Wood named Elizabeth Meyer nee DUNLOP. She was born in Simcoe county in November of 1846. She and George were married on 27 Nov 1862 in Simcoe County and they had their children in that area. Maria Elizabeth (Minnie), Georgina Jane, Beatrice, Florence May, Henry George, Alice Maud and Katie Teressa. Elizabeth WOOD is mentioned in her brother's obituary in 1921 as living in Toronto at that time. I have found a potential death registration for her on the Ontario death index for 25 May 1925 in Guelph, but the image of the certificate is missing on ancestry. If anyone has any information about this famiy please contact me at gwenny@snet.net
Gwen Cunningham

Doyle in the Toronto area

Looking for information on Thomas and Mary Alice Doyle and family. Believed to have moved to the Toronto area from Perth County, early 1900's or late 1800's. I believe Thomas Doyle and his wife Mary Alice (Haney) Doyle are buried in the Toronto area. They were Roman Catholic.
Thomas and Mary Alice had 6 children:
William b. 1883 married to Mamie Claridge
James Lawrence b. 1890
Alice b. 1888
Thomas b. 1885 m. Emily Myrtle Adair (they met in Toronto)
Jack (John)
Lawrence (Tony) m. Ethel Adair (she was born in Toronto, they both died in Toronto, she in 1987, he an unknown date)

I know that some of the Doyle children and spouses are buried in York County.
Any information on the Doyle, Adair or Claridge families of York County is much appreciated.

Hello,

I am searching for any information on Albert Leo Stringer. He married Ann Mable Smith and together they had 5 children: Alfred, James, Orval, Audrey and Madeline.

From what I've been told, Alfred Stringer Sr. led a double life, eventually leaving his family for one he started somewhere in the U.S. (Ohio I believe). He apparently used some of the first names of the children from his first marriage on children from his affair.

It has been very difficult for me to track down information on this side of the family. Any help you can provide me with would be greatly appreciated. I am really curious to know more about his double life.

Thank you for your time.

Hello: The Widow of John Wilson (b 1812 - d 8 May 1870) is still living at their King Street East home in the 1871 City Directory for Toronto. The house is at or near the corner of Sumach Street and I think on the north side of King Street. In one year their house was numbered as 437 and then for a couple of years 439, not sure if houses were renumbered again or not.

Could someone please check the 1871 census for Mrs. Wilson and give me her details. I don't know her given name, her age or where she was born. Are there others with her, any children?

She is the second wife of John Wilson and I hope that tracing her will give us more info about him also. An infant of John Wilson and the second Mrs. Wilson is buried at St James Cemetery Jun 1858.

Thank you for anything that anyone can help with. Cherie Lynn
