UPTHEGROVE surname in Niagara in late 1700s

Nancy Ann UPTHEGROVE born in Ontario circa 1805 married (1837) Dennis KELLEY (or O'Kelley) also born in Ontario circa 1805. According to RootsWeb's WorldConnect the couple had five children, at least one of whom, their daughter Amanda, is known to have been born in Ontario (in Wainfleet Township in 1845). Nancy and Dennis at some point moved their family to Wisconsin where Dennis died in 1850 and Nancy remarried.

Looking especially for information on the parents of Nancy and Dennis. I have found a John UPTHEGROVE and Ann OBAM UPTHEGROVE living in the Niagara area in the late 1700s. They are said to have come over the border from the USA during or immediately after the Revolution. Ann is thought to have some blood relationship to Seneca Chief Cornplanter. From various online sources I found the names of three sons born in Niagara: Abram (born 1776) Peter (born 1779), and Benjamin (born 1785).

Trying to see if there is any tie-in for Nancy to this family...a daughter???

Any information would be most appreciated.

The Welland Library online genealogy page has index: Horsley, daughter, Welland, People's Press, page 5, 10/02/1914, B.
This appears to be a birth. It's available for view at their main branch, 50 The Boardwalk, but I am not physically able to attend. This is apparently on a microfilm, 071.1338 Wel Tri. The date appears to read as 10th February 1914. The library web info doesn't seem to encourage queries from elsewhere. Will someone be kind enough to look this up and post copy as reply? Am interested to learn name of child and confirm supposed parents William and Minetta. Thank you.
R. Coleman
I am looking for my great, great, grandfather's grave, John Bouck. He was born in 1812 (I think), married a Martha Merrithew and had at least one son John born in 1852. I believe they lived in the Pelham / Fonthill area as my Father spoke of visiting family there. Fonthill Cemetery was kindly checked by Sharon Kirk as I live in Scotland and can't make local searches myself.

If we are talking about the same person,Harmonius Zimmerman was born in Rockland twp.Berks County,Penna. His parents were Hermannus and Susanna(Borneman)Zimmerman.Harmonius left for Canada some time after 1797.His father landed at Philadelphia in 1753 aboard the ship Rowand and appears in the tax records for Berks County from the 1770's until 1797 when the property was sold by Harmonius to Adam Ruppert and his wife who was a sister to Harmonius. If you are interested in this line I had tracked them years ago but no longer have much interest in pursuing them since I have been unable to establish a connection to them.At the time that Herman sr. arrived in Philadelphia he was accompanied by a Mathias Zimmerman who was from Bolsberg,Germany;there is a possibility that they may have been brothers. There are other researchers here in the states who have worked on Harmonius and I believe that I have his wife's name and their offspring some where but will have to dig to find this info.Bob Zimmerman e-mail:zim65riv@hazleton.net

Looking for any family of "Mrs" Miriam Stevens of Thorold Ont. Her Natural birth mother Miriam may not have been aware was actually Mary Jane (Griffiths)b. 1879 Ardwick Manchester Lancashire. Miriam may have also had a daughter by the name of Margaret Stevens and other children too. They had a relative living in Toronto Area until 1985 Called Vera (Dawson) Burton who passed away at that time.

Apparently a lady by the name of Mrs Emery played an important role in both Miriam and Margaret's life. Perhaps as a foster mother after Miriam's mother died when she was young.

Please contact me at gdgriffiths@shaw.ca if this sounds familiar at all. We are looking for our relatives..

Geo. & Donna Griffiths

Please contact me if anyone reading this has any information regarding this family at all.

We are related to Miriam Stevens and only just found out about it. I realize she may have passed on but I understand she may have had children. We received this information from a newly found relative in England.

It appears our grandfather John Alfred Griffiths b. 1885 Openshaw Manchester England and Miriam's first immgrating relative Mary Jane Griffiths b. 1879 were brother & sister. He never shared information about his family it seems.

Mary Jane died as I understand it, rather early in her twenties, after going to Canada so I am not sure how much information you have about her. I have some photos of family some of which note a Mrs. Emery, Margret Stevens (daughter?), and of course Mary Jane with her siblings and mother.

It was my understanding that over the years they may have lived in the Peterborough and Niagra areas too.

Thank you for reading this...
Jody & Donna Griffiths
I have one birth record for a child of Jan (John) Stobnicki and Anna Surman from Port Colborne and am trying to find the same for three other children. I know that Frank Stobnicki (Ancestry has it Stoberick) was born on 24 January 1888.

I have the following information:
Mary born Oct 1885 Canada (from 1900 US Census);
Joseph Born Dec 1886 Canada (from 1900 US Census) or 2 Dec 1885 (from WWI Draft registration);
Carolina/Karolina about 25 Mar 1888 (from death record St. Stanislaus Church Buffalo NY).

Some of these dates must be incorrect as the children would have been born too close together.

Does anyone have access to LDS Film 1309901? The family were Polish Catholics, and I was told they probably would have been baptized in St. Patricks.

Thank you in advance

William Atkinson - Pelham Friends Cemetery lookup?

Looking for info regarding William Atkinson born 1778. We believe he was married to a Morningstar, and that he fathered Thomas (b.1810 m. Clarissa Ellsworth), Anne (b.1811), and Robert (b.1819 m. Mary Long). He was living in Woodhouse in 1812 and was a member of the Norfolk Militia. We believe he died sometime between 1814 and the 1861 census when his wife is living alone with son Robert and family.
There is a William Atkinson listed as being buried at the Pelham Evangelical Friends Cemetery. As I am living in Connecticut, I was wondering if there was someone in the area who has easy access to this cemetery and who wouldn't mind checking out this tombstone to find out if this is "our" ggggrandfather. Thanks!

I'm looking for James Keating who lived in Clifton. He was
born in 1863 in Ontario. Moved with his mother Annie Keating and this father Patrick Keating to Utica N.Y. Then he returned at the age of 17 to Clifton and lived with Phillip
Keating born in Ireland in 1822. I found that Phillip died in
1885 and James in 1904. If anyone has any information on these 2 please e-mail me. James would have been my great uncle and I am not sure about Phillip.

Stamford Township - Welland County- 1806 Birth Records

I am searching for the BIRTH RECORD of a SAMUEL (first name) born in APRIL of 1806 in STAMFORD TOWNSHIP in WELLAND COUNTY. Names of mother and father are unknown. This Samuel came to be the eldest and adopted son of my 3rd Great Grandfather, Abraham Cowell, who I suspect married Samuel's mother (most probably also in Welland County around 1811 but exact year unknown) either after Samuel's father abandoned him and his mother, or he died. Any help with this birth record for Welland County or any marriage records for an Abraham Cowell in either Welland, Haldimand, or Norfolk Counties, would be gratefully appreciated... Thank You Martha Cowell-Calloway http://mysite.verizon.net/kingrex/thecharlesandrewcowellfami...
He died 26Jul1879 in Pepin Wisconsin. He married a woman named Sarah Jane Lafferty and had three children, George P, Louis LL, and Nora Nell Cook. Nora Nell is my grand-mother. I am not sure if he was born in Ontario, New Brunswick or Quebec. I would bet on Quebec because family history claims or family was part french on my Grandmothers side.

I would appreciate any assistance any could give me.

Shari G

Help with a 1912 Welland Marriage Affidavit

I recently found my great grandparents’ wedding affidavit in Welland. Hoping to find where my great grandfather was born, the ink on the affidavit apparently dissolved on that location revealing only a “G______ia.” See attached.

Since both were Roman Catholics, I’m thinking they were married in a Catholic Church in Welland, and it might be possible that another register exists in the church records that could provide another clue. My first question is does this affidavit represent that only a civil ceremony took place, and does anyone know what Catholic church was available in Welland that may have been frequented by people from Poland?

Thanks

I'm trying to find information about John Dilts parents.

All I know about John is that he was born in Welland or Wellandport. He married Ellen Game also known as Nellie. They had 2 children both born in Ontario. Their daughter Jessie Edna was born in 1897 and she married John Daniel Marlatt. I found John and his family in the New York state census of 1910.I then found his application for Alberta Homestead application in 1914. In 1918 his son Arthur Alfred lists his next of kin as John from Welland on his WW1 attestation paper.

1910 NY census his year of birth as 1861
1914 Alberta homestead application lists his age as 56 this would make him born abt 1858.

If anyone knows this John Dilts, I would greatly appreciate any information.

Thank you

Upper Family Cemetery

The Uper Family Cemetery is located in Allanburg, Ontario, in the Township of Thorold, in Welland County. It is located within walking distance of the Welland Canal ( which was built long after the cemetery was established. The family lived in Thorold Township, in the village of Allanburg, Beaverdams, and Thorld itself. One of the oldest plots is of a Lt. Anthony Upper who fought with the Butler's Rangers.

The Upper homestead was used as a Military post during the war of 1812. The Niagara Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society published the transcriptions of the family burying ground. Family can also be found in St. Catahrines in Lincoln Co., and Fonthill Municipal Cemetery in Pelham Twp. My 2nd Great Grand Aunt was married to a William Upper opf that family. They lived in Beaverdams, then moved to Michigan between 1892 and 1912. They returned to Beaverdams, and were buried in Allanburg.
Some of teh family members ran a tavern in Allanburg.

A. Riddell

Frederick was born 1863 & married in Ontario, but I can't find him in any census but 1901, in Bridgeburg, Welland. He was a teacher in the Niagara area (Queenston) until 1906 when he moved to Dalston, Ont. Then in 1908 to East Hill, Saskatchewan. I would like to find his family, he was the youngest of 13 all born in Ont. He married Mary Ellen Reid in 1885/6 & they had 7 children, one of whom was my father-in-law's (age 84) mother Edna Louise. Any ideas, directions, or info out there? Thanks MJ

1. I found under Social & Personal St.Catharines Standard 19 Jun 1937 "The marriage of Miss Ethel WALKER of Stamford, & Mr. Edward ELLIOTT, of St.Catharines, takes place in St.John's Church, Stamford, at 2:30 this afternoon". There was no article on the marriage in the standard, could someone look in the Niagara Falls paper and let me know the details?
2. My greatgrandfather Job ELLIOTT was fatally injured while working on the Hydro development job at Niagara Falls.
St.Catharines Standard had a story in 15 May 1919 stating it had happened a week prior. He was employed as a trackman, slid down a small embankment under a train of work cars, the wheels of the work cars passing over him cutting off both his legs and causing severe scalp injuries. I'm sure there must b more in the Niagara papers but am not able 2 get to Niagara Falls. Could someone please look to see if there r any articles on this fatal accident. Thanks in advance Elena
