Thanks for the reply. I'm tracing the Sloan family and I lose Elizabeth Aikman when she moves to Canada. So if you have any information about her, where she came from and what her life was like after she married Elijah Owen that would be great!

Thank you,
Sally

I was told my grand-father was an orphan all my life. When I started researching several years ago I found that he was born out of wedlock. His father was his uncle. Apparently his mother has an affair with her brother-in-law and hence my grandfather came into the world. He looked so much like his half-brother that they kept him away from his family. His mother died when he was 15 months old and he was shifted from foster homes to an orphanage. He ended up being sent to Canada as a British Home Child in 1899. He ended up in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He married my grand-mother and moved to Michigan. I have researched and found lots of information on his family in England and have made contact with distance relations. Quite a story! What I would suggest is writing to the city of Hamilton and asking about the orphanages in the Hamilton area and maybe even the local library could give you some information or the Archives of Canada. Don't give up he is out there in a record somewhere. I am still trying to locate my great-great grand-father and have come to a brick wall but I keep trying. Good luck. Susan

Hi Fred

Thanks for replying. Unfortunately I am in the process of moving and all my files are packed. I tried your email address but it didn't work. I learned about the First Incorporated Militia at the National Archives. What info I got was letters written by the officer re pay and equipment. In the first part Robert Elsie was shown as last name Elsey and about halfway through in was changed to Elsie. He marked his pay records with a X so I assume he could not read. This was around 1840. His company was sent to Niagria falls, Fort Erie and Port Colborne. There are a lot of Elsie's in these areas today. In the 1851 census for Hamilton there was a Elsey family just outside of Hamilton. Other than the pay records I haven't found any other records which when I saw you wrote about early militia units I thought I would give you a try to see if there was somewhere I could look., I understand that there is a museum in Hamilton with records for the various militia units in the area. I am in Ottawa but hopoe to get down to Hamilton to check this out.

Dave

Hello,
The older sister of my great great grandmother was Mary Davidson, she was married to James Goodale. Mary was born in Scotland and moved to Canada with the family.
I believe she is buried in the Waterdown Municipal Cemetery. I am wondering if anyone can provide me with any information on her. I believe she died around 1941-44. I do not have too much on her, yet.
Dave,

The 5th Lincoln and the 2nd York Militia were recruited from the Hamilton area. Some of these men joined the Incorporated Militia in 1813 and some joined Provincial Regiments. I have not heard of the 1st Canadian. Where did you find a reference to this regiment?

John Sutton (1773-1856) and Peter Sutton served in the 2nd York. A Peter Sutton also served in the 5th Lincoln.
Cemetery Look-ups

Hello Everyone

I see a lot of posts looking for information. One resource that I have found very informative is the Hamilton Genealogical Society website. They have c/d's for sale at very resonable prices (around $20) that show a lot of the Hamilton / Burlington and area cemetery headstone transcriptions. There are hand drawn maps and alphabetical lists which make finding the cemetery plots a lot easier, and I am sure they will appreciate the funding.

The other way I find things is to personally visit the Hamilton Cemetery Head Office on York Street (across from Dundurn Castle), they are only open during regular business hours which makes weekends problematic, if you have a name and are pretty sure of the cemetery they can usually point you right to the cemetery plot, this is especially helpful when the plot is unmarked as I have found in a few cases so far. If that is the case, the grounds crew are also usually helpful to point you in the right direction, I have never been disappointed yet.

Armed with both these sources of information you can usually find everyone that you look for.

Regards

Canon Henry (Harry) - After a brief illness, The Rev. Canon Henry (Harry) Morrow passed away peacefully on January 27th, 2012 at the Sault Area Hospital.

Born in Hamilton on April 16, 1916, he was predeceased by Edith, his wife of 54 years.

He is survived by a daughter Mary Nock (David) and son Kevin as well as numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.

Leaving school during the difficult years of the Great Depression he gained experience in a variety of manual jobs in order to help support his family.

These practical skills stood him in good stead leading him to a position teaching Manual Arts at the Shingwauk Residential School (Sault Ste. Marie) in the late 1940s.

There he met his wife, Edith Elford, (who had said she would never marry a priest!).

Married in 1950, Harry provided Edith with a major surprise when he informed her of his call to the Anglican Ministry several years later.

Luckily this turned out to be the beginning of a long and effective Team Ministry!

Harry was ordained Deacon in 1954 and Priest in 1955 by Archbishop W. L. Wright.

Thereafter, he served in various parishes including those in Garden River, the Manitoulin Island, Sudbury and surrounding region, Sault Ste. Marie, New Liskeard and Thunder Bay, where he ended his formal ministry.

He was made a Canon of the Cathedral before his retirement in 1983.

Supported by his wife, Edith, he was known for his inventive efforts to bring the Gospel message fully alive including the use of drama, mascots, expositions, humour and multicultural and multireligious appreciation.

Harry used his excellent artistic skills to good use in his photographic, painting and woodworking hobbies.

He was a fully engaged member of Kiwanis for over 40 years and supported a wide range of charities.

Active at St. Luke's Cathedral to the very end, (for many years the Bishop's Chaplain), he was dubbed 'the Good Canon'!

He leaves a legacy of strong faith enhanced by powerful efforts to bring the Gospel of Christ to others. He lives on in the thoughts and memory of his many friends and admirers who saw the 'Christ Light' shine clearly throughout his long life of 95 years.

Visitation at the Arthur Funeral Home between 6 and 9 pm on Monday, January 30th, 2012.

Funeral services will be held at St. Luke's Cathedral on Tuesday, January 31st at 1 pm with reception to follow.

Inurnment at St. Luke's Columbarium at a later date.

Memorial contributions to St. Luke's Cathedral or the Primate's World Relief and Development Fund would be appreciated by the family.

Expressions of sympathy may be offered here.

****************************

Re Annie and Henry Morrow.
I am not sure if the father of Harvey Nelson St. John was a sibling of Stephen St. John or not. The timing is right to be related.
This is a few years later but I am till searching for the burial place of Harvey St. John and Katy Rittenburg St. John. It should be in Wellington County. They lived in Saltfleet. I'll check the message boards...I've been concentrating on public trees so much that I've forgotten to check the message board. It would be great if someone else was also researching the same line. E.

Do you know if that Stephen was related to Nelson Harvey? I wonder what James's middle initial stands for ... Harvey?

As for Elizabeth Jane (Francis), I have seen her origin as US in most of the censuses. However, George St.John (Son) has her as Canadian, and father Francis as Connecticut on the 1900 Michigan census.

That Stephen St. John and his wife Elizabeth St. John are the Stephen St. John and Elizabeth Bellinger that I was mentioning. Stephen St. John must have died between 1852 and 1861 as he is not located in the 1861 Census. Elizabeth however died later when records became the norm
Ontario, Canada Deaths, 1869-1934 about Elizabeth St John
Name: Elizabeth St John
Death Date: 17 Jul 1875 Aged 87yrs 9mos
Death Location: Lincoln
Cause of Death: Old Age & debility (helpless 2yrs)
Gender: Female
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1788
Birth Location: PA
Source Citation: Roll: MS935_12.
****Note James H. St John of Grimsby was the informant of the death of Elizabeth St. John
================================

Incidentally the Bellinger family were Loyalists so perhaps that is why the story has been passed down that the St. John Family were of Loyalist stock. Descendants of Stephen St. John would be UE through his wife. I have not been able to connect which branch of the Bellinger family Elizabeth is a descendant of yet.

Donna WLHS

The suggestion that Elizabeth Jane could have been a St. John, before marrying Francis Perry St. John,is a good one, especially thinking about the times back then. Marrying a cousin was not unheard of. I have also thought this at times too. This is the fascination of ancestry...solving the mysteries!
Thank you...
Anne

I am beginning to think that Elizabeth Jane wife of Francis Perry St. John was a St. John before her marriage. Francis was born in USA about 1822 in USA. Elizabeth Jane was born in Ontario about 1830 according to the census records. There was a Stephen St. John born in USA married to an Elizabeth Bellinger also born in USA but they were living in Lincoln County having children in the 1820's. I have not found that Stephen St. John and Elizabeth Bellinger had a daughter named Elizabeth but they could have.
All of the marriages for the children of Francis Perry and Elizabeth Jane give the name Elizabeth St. John as the name of the mother and all of the death records give Elizabeth St. John as the name of the mother Perhaps they are right in naming the maiden name of the mother as Elizabeth St. John

Just maybe Francis St. John from USA came across the border and married a kin of sorts.

That is just an idea I have been floating around.

Donna

I am another arm of the St. John family. My grandmother was Emma St. John, daughter of Samuel Grant St. John, son of Francis Perry St. John. The Francis Perry name seems to be a tradition. My father (son of Emma) was named Perry Francis.
I have been trying for awhile to find the last name of Francis Perry's wife. Her first Names are Elizabeth Jane...but it is a dead end after that. Francis Perry and Elizabeth Jane were the parents of Samuel Grant, Benjamin...and many others. A lot of the family were RLDS ( reorganized latter day saints).
Anyway..if anyone knows Elizabeth Jane's last name...would be much appreciated if you could share.

The 5th Lincoln was recruited from Ancaster, Barton, Binbrook, Glanford, and Saltfleet Townships. I have recently transcribed the LAC online payroll and related documents. My transcripts are awaiting publication. From the transcriptions I have compiled service records. These service records are available, for specific men, upon request. They may indicate which men were at specific battles and other details of the men's service. I am now in the process of writing veteran biographies and collecting family histories. A number of men served in both the 5th Lincoln and 2nd York. Some of my older transcripts are online at http://www.ogs.on.ca/services/1812-militia.php. Enquiries, with the subject "5th Lincoln Militia", are welcome at fredblairorillia@hotmail.com.

Hamilton Foundling Home

My Great Grandfather was taken to the Hamilton Foundling Home (or Children's Home) in the late 1860s. It's believed his parents died. He shows up for the first time in the 1871 census as a "stray" living on the farm of Edwin & Margaret Gray. The only clue I have to his heritage is his marriage certificate which lists his parents as Mathew and Mary Heslop. His name was Wesley Henry Heslop. I have tons of information from 1871 onward but nothing of his mysterious parentage. He was born between 1859 & 1861 depending upon which census you believe and was Methodist. I have been searching for over 25 years to no avail. His name was Wesley Henry Heslop (Hislop/Hyslop) and sometimes was referred to as John Heslop. Anyone having any information on the Hamilton Foundling home, I would love to hear from you. By the way, the information in my tree shows a Mathew & Mary Heslop but I am not convinced they are the correct ones. Thank you.
marilyn B.

ALEXANDER THOMSON AND ISABELLA WILSON

Hi, am stuck! Trying to find death of Isabella (Wilson) married to Alex Thomson in 1868 in Fetteresso (Stonehaven) Scotland. Alexander was until 1920 Editor of Hamilton Times. Census records show him in Wentworth, a widow with daughters Jessie B and Isabella. Shown as widower. He died 14 September 1938 at the grand old age of 93. Address being 31 Mountain Park Avenue., Wentworth District. Hamilton.
Cannot trace Isabella , can anyone help. Isabella would have been alive in 1881 as one of daughters was 20 in 1901. (Her parents were William Wilson and Isabella Black) Any help would be appreciated - another missing link in my Wilson line. Thanks.

On his death registration it only says that he was buried in Hamilton. Informant was Jessie B Thomson 31 Mt Park Ave.
His address is the same.
Try this site
http://ocfa.islandnet.com//

I don't know any papers in Hamilton.
Wow, many thanks for that. The dates tie in both with the census returns 1901 and of course the use of the family names. James being also the father of Alexander. Now to be really cheeky, any clues as to cemetery or paper in which may find obituary. Found out that the paper folded in 1920 so presume wouldn't be there. Any clues to headstone/burial ground would be great. Know this is a big ask so oodles of thanks !! And again, manythanks for this.

1881 census Hamilton City
THOMSON
Alexr, 35, Scotland,
Isabella, 34, Scotland
James, 9,Scotland
Alexr, 7, Ont
Fred'k, 5, Ont
Jessie, 2, Ont
Isabelle, 8/12, b July

1901 census gives immigration date as 1873.

May or may not be your Isabelle

Isabella Thompson, 38, died 26 Nov 1884 of consumption.
Informant was Dr Geo Biggar of Hamilton.
That is the only Isabelle Thompson/Thomson on Ancestry.ca who died between 1881 and 1891 in Wentworth that I could find.

He must have had an obituary with information on it. They were likely buried together so headstone would say when she died.
