Toronto Star's Archives don't begin until 1894. The Globe & Mail's Archives do start earlier (1844), but unless he was a prominent individual, most people did not have the money to place an obituary.
George Wilton Hayward died 23 October 1889, aged 72 years, born Toronto, a builder by trade. The informant of the death was the doctor, so no relationship there.
I did check the Globe & Mail around that time period and found no reference to his death.
