I looked up the 1881 census: wife Kate, son Benjamin, 10 born in the U.S., son Wilton,4 born Ont, and Valerie, 2 born in Ont.

So, if this is the family, they would have been living in the U.S. in 1871.

I searched familysearch.org. In 1870 census I found a George Hayward(born Ontario), teamster, living in Michigan at a boarding house. He was single and 25yrs (which I know doesn't add up to the birth year but still might be him)
