Thompsons of Danville, Que

I'm looking to find descendants of my great-great-uncle Charles Edwin Thompson. I have reason to believe he was an electrician in Danville for some years. My great-great grandfather, Robert Ernest Thompson, stayed with him I believe when he first came to Canada about 1900. They were orphaned at a young age when their mother, Hannah, died in 1885 (predeceased by their father, Thomas, in 1879). The family resided in Reading, Berkshire, England.
Thank you.
Liza Painter**
Kelowna, BC

William Riley McGoon (Magoon) married Catherine E. Donahue on May 02, 1864

My great grandfather William Riley McGoon (Magoon) married Catherine E. Donahue on May 02, 1864 at Wesleyan Methodist in Stanstead, Quebec. Catherine was born in September 1842 at Georgeville, Stanstead, Quebec, Canada. Her parents were John Donahue (1812-1869) from County Tyrone and Mary Donigan (1813-1871) from County Monoghan. William and Catherine had 3 children in Canada, Georgia Anne McGoon - 1864, John Elison McGoon – 1867 and Mary Eleanor McGoon – 1869, before immigrating to the States. They settled in Mt. Sterling Illinois where William J. McGoon-1872 and my grandmother, Kathrine L. McGoon – 1875, were born. The 1880 US Census lists Catherine McGoon as “Head of Household”. Catherine and her children are all buried at the Mt. Sterling Catholic Cemetery. No sign of the father, William Riley. I would like to know where and when William Riley McGoon died. I would also like to know who his parents were and where and when he was born. You can contact me at thenowlans@sbcglobal.net

Jean Baptiste & Marie-Louise (Maheu) Banlier dit LaPerle & family

I would appreciate any information at all regarding my 5th great-grandfather, Jean Baptiste Banlier dit LaPerle & his Wife Marie-Louise Maheu and their known sons Michel Banlier dit LaPerle and Pierre Banlier dit LaPerle (who was my 4th great grandfather).

Jean Baptiste was born August 02, 1711 in Varennes, Quebec, Canada and married Marie Louise Maheu February 08, 1740 at St. Trinite, Contrecoeur, Quebec, Canada. I know they had at least 2 sons - Pierre and Michel. Does anyone know the names of any of Jean Baptiste and Marie-Louise's other children, if any?

I don't know anything about their son, Michel. Any information on Michel would be appreciated.

Jean and Marie-Louise's son, Pierre (my 4th great-grandfather) was born December 06, 1743 at St. Denis-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada. Pierre married Victorie Gaudet January 18, 1768 at St. Antoine-de-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada.

Pierre and Victoria's son, Florentin Banlier dit LaPerle was my 3rd great-grandfather. Florentin was born "circa" 1795. Florentin married Marie-Louise Messier dit St. Francois, August 04, 1817 at St. Denis-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, Canada.

I have seen other messages that state they have seen no evidence of Marie-Louise Messier having a dit name. But her dit name of "St. Francois" shows up on the marriage record of their son, Francois (who is my 2nd great-grandfather).

Florentin and Marie-Louise had several children too. But I only know of Joseph and Francois. Does anyone know of any of the names of Florentin and Marie-Louise's other children?

Florentin's son, Joseph was a witness at the wedding of his brother Francois when he married Esther Levreau, which is how I know about him. But I would also appreciate any other data on Joseph.

Florentin and Marie-Louise's son, Francois was married to Marie Esther Levreau October 05, 1852 at St-Anne-de-Varennes, Varennes, Quebec, Canada.

Francois and Esther had exactly 8 children. This is verified by the 1900 US Federal Census, Plainfield, Windham, Connecticut, Roll: 151, Pg. 153, ED: 518, Sheet 11A, June 14, 1900, which states 4 of her 8 children living were still living at the time. During this census, Esther was widowed and living with her Son, Francis' wife (my great grandmother), who was also widowed at the time. But I only know of the following children of Francois and Esther:
1. Francis (my great grandfather)
2. Jean-Baptiste
3. Alphonse

Most, if not all, of Francois and Esther's children moved to Moosup, Fairfield, Windham Co., Connecticut
Esther emigrated there in 1888. Does anyone know the names of any of Franocis and Esther's other 5 children?

I would appreciate any information at all regarding all of the above listed individuals in my maternal family line.

Thank you.
My Great Grandfather Burnett

His name is: Robert Burnett.
The information I have found is:
marriage to Mary Jane Cairns (aka:Kearns) in Cowansville,Quebec 1893 Anglican Trinity Church.
Residence: 9 Island Str.Sherbrooke District
Found his 4 children. Lawrence Robert James,Elsie,Mildred Emily,Hazel Louise.
He is buried in Lennoxville Quebec. Malvern Cemetery.
I know that he met Mary Jane Cairns after he arrived in Quebec. What I have found is that he immigrated in the year of approx.1884 and was born in England, birth date is 03 AUG 1870 although some reports I viewed show possibly 1871 and/or 1877. (conflicting information from census reports, and canadian expeditionary force attestation paper) Given the date of birth and the date of his immigration, he would have been young when he arrived to the area and I think he may have arrived without parents(?) What I am trying to discover is 'that' particular time of his life, who he was with, or where he stayed or worked or schooled ?? assuming that those younger years where spent in the Eastern Townships.
Can anyone shed some light on my research? Any assistance on this would be appreciated. Thanks from Jo-Ann.

Patrick Slattery, Catherine Pollard

Hello,
Recently while searching the family trees on Roots Web, I found a tree with people exactly like 4x great grandparents my own "McKearney Tree". They are Patrick Slattery and his wife Catherine Pollard. They were born in Ireland in 1787 and 1790.

Well, while I was searching the trees, 2 other family trees had these same people. One tree in particular had Patrick and Catherine living in Pontbriand, but living in Cap Sante, Quebec in the 1840 Quebec census. Is there a 1840 census and where could I find it? I emailed the owners of the trees, but have not heard from them and now they have taken their trees offline. Please feel free to look at my tree.

My goal is to learn where they came from in Ireland.

Thank you.
Regards, Liz

I have not been able to find her siblings.

Ausith and Francois Smart had 9 children who all lived in the Clinton County, New York area. Mainly Saranac and Plattsburgh.

Nelson
Joseph
Alfred
Rose
Julia
Amelia
Harriet
Henry
Josephine

Nelson was married to Louisa Coloumbe who was from Canada. I am interested in her connection to the Boudreau-Coloumbe line, but have been unsuccessful in finding it.

Please contact me if anything looks familiar.

Melissa
The family was french, Freeman was Catholic and a farmer and his wife Amelie and children were Baptist.
The census information that I have only gives the place of census as Hatley,Stanstead,Québec, district 56,household number is 206. Would there be any land records on file that would tell me where they lived? They settled in this area sometime around 1877 after returning from Vermont.
I am living in the townships and would love to be able to see where they lived.
Any information and advise would be appreciated.
Thank you.
Sandy
I am looking for descendants of Silas Fuller and Bill (William) Fuller both of Hereford (or any relatives). Both took the Oath of Allegiance in 1795. Silas settled in Caldwell's Manor and Bill Settled in Christie's Seig. They were both listed as coming from Hereford. I believe that they are ancestors but have not been able to find information about their descendants. I believe that my 5th G grandfather William Fuller born Circa 1795 was a descendant. he settled in London Twp, Middlesex County, Ontario on a land grant and is listed as coming from Quebec. I would appreciate any help or links to look for information.

Can anyone offer any advice please. My father in law Henry Hart was working for Lawrence Smith in September 1932. Previous to this he worked for Earl Ring in Brigham. He came to Canada in 1930 with the British Immigration Colonisation Association. We know he worked in Quebec as a lumberjack after 1932 but don't know where. I am trying to track his movements before he came back to England in about 1935.

We think he may have married in Quebec, but I'm having problems trying to check for this marriage. Would any employment records be available for checking? Or perhaps tax records or something like that? Many thanks.

1802 Grantee List for lands in Sutton Township, Brome Co

The work "Sesquicentennial of Sutton, 1802-1952," by Dyer and Eastman, contributes much to our understanding of the township. William MARSH, Jr. (born 1754) had explored the township in the fall of 1783 and submitted a detailed report to Captain MATHEWS in Quebec. Beginning as early as 1792, some people had taken up residence in Sutton Twp, but between then and 1802, none of these people owned the land on which they resided. According to Dyer and Eastman, "In August 1802, Robert Short Milnes granted lands to 170 Loyalists. As an aid to researchers who are interested in these original Grantees, I have transcribed the lists of names exactly as they appear in "Sesquicentennial." Both lists apparently contain errors and omissions. Comparing the lists side by side, however, improves our ability to identify the list of Grantees. "Discrepant" indicates that the names are spelled differently or that the name is missing altogether from one or other of the versions.

Sesquicentennial of Sutton 1802-1952
Dyer, George C. and Eastman, Phyllis, images 15 & 17
Grantee list Grantee list
(French version) (English version)
1	John Allen John Allen
2	Peter Allan Peter Allan
3	Jabez Bronson Jabez Bronson
4	Christopher Babaty Christopher Babaty
5	Garret Burghedt Garret Burghedt
6	Job Babcock Job Babcock
7	John Bochus discrepant
8	Jehabad Babcock discrepant
9	Robert Bisbaib Robert Bishaib	discrepant
10	John Both discrepant
11	Samuel Brown discrepant
12	Conrad Burghedt discrepant
13	Jacob Bear discrepant
14	Herman Best discrepant
15	Wm Ball discrepant
16	Jacob Ball discrepant
17	John Brown	John Brown
18 Samuel Brown	discrepant
19	Daniel Beagle	Daniel Beagle
20	Patrick Conroy	Patrick Conroy
21	Philip Cook Jr.	Philip Cook Jr.
22	Geo.
Joseph Perkins, Shipton, 1800s

Dear Friends, I am trying to document Joseph Perkins, d. Shipton 30 Jan 1846, and his wife, Sarah Fowler, d. 24 Jun 1841, for a DAR application. I have a copy of Joseph's RW pension papers so I can prove his service, but I need as much info as I can put together for the application, esp. his death, burial, and child Pauline/Polly who was born in Shipton 11 Apr 1804 or 1805.
I do not have any experience with this areaof research although I've be working on my roots for 20 years, so would appreciate suggestions, information, etc. I am perfectly willing to pay a researcher for this, so if you can recommend someone, I would greatly appreciate that. It would be very difficult to travel to Shipton to do it myself.
Thanks so much, Karen Sullivan
A few days ago I posted on this subject to the Eastern Townships mailing list. I had some enquiries asking for more details. At the suggestion from Jacki Russell, I am posting more detailed instructions here. As these instructions are fairly large I am posting them as replies to this topic.

Birth/Baptismal records for 1840's in St. Georges, PQ

Can anyone tell me where I might find an 1844 birth or baptismal record from St. Georges? My gggrandfather Israel Etienne Myers (real last name Brockmeyer) was born in St. Georges in 1844. Am trying to confirm parents' names. Allegedly, father's name was Jean Baptiste Myers (Brockmeyer), and mother's maiden name was Duma (Dumas?). On his marriage info in Rutland Co. Vermont, he lists his birthplace as St. Georges. Any ideas?

I am searching for burial information on Louis Frappier dit Beaunoyer who died 29 Feb 1896 in St-Paul-Chester, Arthabaska County. After his death, his wife Angele Fontaine, daughter of Phillippe Fontaine and Victoire Lambert, moved to Lowell, MA where she died and was buried.
Louis Frappier born 1817, was the son of Charles Frappier dit Beaunoyer and Marie Archange Chastenay. I don't know where or when Charles or Marie Archange died or were buried.
I was also wondering about the cemetery in St-Paul-Chester. Is it an active cemetery? If so could anyone give me an address for the cemetery so I could write to them?
Any help on the above families would be very much appreciated.

I have done extensive research on my family but am having difficulty with finding anything that can document this part of my lineage (church records, census, etc..)

I found much of the early Avery records in Abbotsford (Protestant) and later at Notre-Dame Granby from the Drouin Collection but unable to find many records from 1800-1860's.

Does anyone have access to any of the records for this time period (particularly the census records from this period).

William Avery & Martha Stewart

1.
Seeking Info on PLANT family in Eaton, Sherbrooke County before 1851

I am trying to locate parents for my Gx3 Grandfather, Stephen Plant. He was born about 1821 in Quebec according to the 1851 census. He married Eliza Drowns, born about 1820 (her birthplace differs from census to census). They moved to Grafton county New Hampshire sometime before 1870. According to family sources, there is a possibility the name Plant may have been changed at some point from Plante, or possibly LaPlante.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hello! I an using this general board as I don't see Lotbiniere county listed. I have significant records copied from the archives of Laval University in Quebec that show my ancestors and their wives families lived on Craig Road West in Lotbiniere county. I think this county should be part of the site. I will share all information I have. I suggest that the resource "St. Sylvestre se raconte, 1828-1978" by Le comite des recherches historiques sous la direction de Julien Bilodeau, historien be included in the resource list. Sorry if it is there and I missed it. This book lists many, many English settlers who came to Canada for the very reasons you have stated, including my ancestor Nicholas Carpenter, his wife, his father in law, Josiah King. See page 74-81 and the pull out maps in the book referenced above.

Thanks for taking a look at this change to the excellent web page.

Jerry Carpenter
Supposedly he owned a hotel in Sherbrooke for these years, arrived from London with horses and groomsmen and governess. He then moved on to Ohio about 1862.

I am attaching a photo taken at St James the Less Anglican church, Compton. I believe it to date from about 1900, give or take a few years. My mother's uncle, John Richard Johnson, is third from the top on the right. Can anyone identify the others? Is Charlie Hyatt there? I believe the priest might be George H Parker, who was in Compton about this time. Can anyone confirm?

I'm looking for the parents of Sally SHorey (1828-1909), who married Charles Walker Humphrey at the Baptist-Calvinist Church in Barnston, Stanstead County, Quebec, on January 1, 1850. They had quite a few children: Verta, Clarinda, Sarah, Mary Alice, Lillian, Jessie, Cora and Frederick. I may have missed one or two. Sally died in 1909 and was buried in Barnston. I can't seem to find any Shoreys living in Barnston yet. I'd appreciate it if anyone has any info on Sally.

Angeline BARBEAU b 1823-1826 Quebec; who were her people?

Angeline BARBEAU b 1823-1826 Quebec; who were her people?

Searching for Angeline BARBEAU b 1823-1826 Quebec; who were her parents & siblings?

I know Harry CARPENTER b abt 1803 m/2 Angeline BARBEAU in 1847 in Canada, Quebec, Bedford District, which is documented. A lot of researchers know about Harry and his two marriages, but I'm interested in Angeline's family per se. Angeline was my 2nd ggrandmother. Family tale says that Angeline was at least part American Indian/Native American.

I know about Harry's 1st marriage to Esther Ester WRIGHT. Harry had a whole second family with Angeline, having at least seven kids born between 1849 and 1866. Harry and Angeline appear to have crossed the border to US about 1865.

1870 New York, Clinton County, Peru lists five of Angeline's and Harry's kids, with a sixth child (eldest daughter) Diana having just married the February before and in new household with hubbie Nelson ROCK, New York, Clinton County, Peru.

Harry appears to have died in the 1870s, leaving Angeline a widow by 1880. In 1880 New York, Clinton County, Peru census, she shows up (with son William and niece Ada) as a servant in household of Daniel NELSON.

Angeline's daughter Susan's husband Robert JARRARD was a canalers (whole canaling families lived out long and thin roving "houseboats") on Lake Champlain, St. Lawrence River, Hudson River down to New York City, New Jersey, Delaware & Hudson Canal (Ulster County, Kingston, Rondout), and some Erie Canal, so I wouldn't be surprised if Angeline's ancestors were spread out along the St. Lawrence River or waterways leading to/fro Lake Champlain. I know: that helps a lot, since most Quebec-ians were located in the vicinity of St. Lawrence River ANYWAY.

Who were Angeline's people (parents, siblings, extended family)? Where does she fit in with other of Quebec's BARBEAUs? Any BARBEAU genealogists out there?

keyword angelina

Page, Semca)Wilkinson, born Jan 1873. I am stuck on my research. The last name in this line is Simon Wilkinson, born 1839, fater of semca Wilkinson. Mother was named Amata, born 1840. Senecal was married to an Almira (Elmira) Jacob, Born March 1879.
It seems to be a dead end when it comes to both the Wilkinson line and the Jacob line. Does anyone have these people in their family history? Any helpful suggestions would be VERY happily recieved!!!!

1825 Census for Grande Ligne area

I'm a seasoned genealogist, but I have never researched in Canada and I'm hopelessly lost. I contacted a wonderful woman who has transcribed many of the church records for the area, and she found the family name, but these entries were too late. The church was the Baptist Church at La Grande Ligne de l'Acadie. I notice those records only begin in 1838. The Lore/Lord records in those records reflect a family born in the very early 1800s who are probably siblings of my ancestor, which of course would indicate that their parents were living there in the early 1800s. My Anthony Lore was born in Canada in 1806 near the Vermont border, and the name Anthony (Antonio) and Solomon is repeated in this family in various generations. Anthony named his son Solomon.

Now I'm lost. Where do I search next. I tried to google and I think that the county name was Saint Jean, but when looking at another site relevant to the counties of that area, I don't find a county by that name, let along the 1825 census information.

Can anyone tell me if Saint John is a historical county name and the county is by another name today? I understand the census wasn't taken by county but by district. How do I determine which district Grand Ligne was located in for 1825? Are those records transcribed and available someplace?

I'm really sorry to have such basic questions, but I have no idea whatsoever where to find the answers or how to pursue this family further. They seem just within reach...but just outside as well.

Any help or suggestions are most gratefully accepted.

Roberta Estes

I have found family born in Megantic County.
-John Turner from Ireland married Emily Hughes from England on Sept 9th, 1857. In Census records there are strong ties to a Robert Turner(43 in 1861 Census) who marries Eliza Arnold Nov 9th, 1853. Are they brothers?
-My William Jamieson married Elizabeth Bracken January 8th, 1861. I think he is the same William Jamieson born to Robert and Eliza Mcginnis Jamieson March 22nd, 1834 in St. Gilles or Leeds. There are so many Williams!
-My Elizabeth Bracken was born July 7th, 1840 to John and Jane Grady Bracken, both from Ireland.
-My Emily Hughes is of Leeds when she marries John Turner, but Census say of England every year I find her. There are other Hughes in the area, but no clear ties. She died Oct 23rd, 1890 at the age of 70 which would make her birth year 1820ish but the Census of 1861 approximated her age at 25! I'm struggling.
I can't get back to Ireland. I would love to find out more of how they lived and where they were from. I have studied the census records, and have found many names extracted by the local historical societies, to document my information which originally came from my grandfather who died in 1950. I have been to Salt Lake and to the Canadian National Archives in British Columbia to hunt through the many wonderful Quebec records, but we were protestant, and apparently did not enter any vital information even in the mandated Provincial records. Thanks for any help.

My name is Marge Howe. I have an eleven generation genealogy of Digory Sargent in the works, spanning a period of the 1600's to the 1900's. His descendants Roswell, Luther and others removed from America to the Eastern Townships of Quebec after the Revolutionary War.
Also, his son Daniel Sargent was captured by indians, taken to Quebec, baptised at age 7 as a Catholic with the name Louis-Philippi Serien dit Langlais and thus his descendants go by the name Langlais. I speak only English. If you feel you have some connection to this family and would like to be included or wish to ask any questions about this family please either mail to this board or privately to Marge at jmhowe@sover.net....Williamsville, Windham Co., VT

Actually found his parents (Fransis and Sophah Shettle in Dunham, Que.) in a 1851 Census. Then, I was stuck. It was a virtual dead-end. Shettles were no where to be found! Then, a couple of months ago, I discovered by looking (page by page!!!) thru the Drouin Index, a Francois and Sophie Dagle (Daigle) in Durham, Que. Since then, I have found 4 of their children's baptisms -- all in different churches!!! in the Drouin index. The puzzle is still building. I have not yet found Moses ( but have found Francois, Sophie, Mary (Marie) and Nazer. I still have more records to go thru. All of the children so far have different godfathers and godmothers listed. If anyone has records of Francois and Sophie, I would appreciate any information !! Thanks
Shawna in Vermont

Michel Potvin & Mary/Philense/Philinese Cushing/Courchesne

Hoping some one can help me, I have a Arthur/Andrew Potvin from Vermont, whom on his death and 2nd marriage record states that his parents were Thomas Potvin and Mary/Philense/Philinse Cushing/Courchesne. I recently came up with a 1901 census of Granby Quebec of a Michel and Philinise Potvin. I was wondering if anyone would know for sure if this couple could be the parents of Arthur/Andrew. We have a birth of Feb 13 1879 Granby Quebec that was seen on Arthur's death record. His 2nd marriage as well as death record said he was born in Granby.

I also have seen in Ancestry a Lora Potvin b Mar 18 1875 whom was a daughter of Michel Potvin and Marie Courchesne, she could be their oldest child not included in the 1901 census of Granby Village Quebec.

This Arthur/Andrew married Julia Menard in Canada, This was her second marriage with at least 5 Cote/Cota Children from her first marriage (3 Cote children were included in Vermont 1910 census listed as stepchildren to Arthur) and Arthur and Julia having two children: Antoine Potvin b Jan 2 1901 Canada and Rodolphe Potvin b Mar 8 1903 Granby.

On the 1901 Granby Villiage Census of Michel Potvin, his birth was not included but was age 46, and Philinise was listed as born Apr 28, 1856 age 44. So Michel should be born abt 1854. Included in household are children:

Moise Potvin: b June 20 1880 age 20
Clara Potvin b July 9 1885 age 15
Willie Potvin b May 9 1890 age 10
Heline Potvin b July 28 1893 age 7
Rose Potvin b Aug 19 1894 age 6

If anything here sound familar or if some one could verify that This same Michel Potvin and Philinese are the parents of Arthur/Andrew Potvin b. Feb 13 1879 Granby. Your help will be much appreciated.

Barb
