Family of Helene Ellen Martha O'Casey Casey

I am looking for information on my ggrandmother's family. Her name was Ellen (Helene') Martha O'Casey Casey. Her death certificate had her place of birth as Dixville, Coaticook, Quebec. She was born March 11, 1863. She married John McPherson. They had one son born in Canada, Albert J., born August 22, 1883, the census states he was born in New Brunswick. The couple and their son immigrated to the US by 1888, when the next son was born here in Minnesota. I could not find Dixville or Coaticook in the choices to post this. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Ginette,

Thank you for the lead. I followed up and they are the same persons that are on the 1891 Hatley census that I was quering. The female name is Napilona Patten, William and Mary are her parents as stated. I found out the Napilona died in Massawippi in 1892 and William Sr. went back to Vermont and died in 1901at the age of 69. I have not been able to locate William Jr. or the children listed on the 1891 Census Fredrick age 8 and female child age 3. On the same 1891 census (page 2) there is a Ham Family and my Grandmother was a domestic servant for them and appears on the 1901 census and again on the 1911 census where it states "adopted". My grandmother never used the Ham name. My grandmother also had a brother named Fred. Thanks again, I really appreciste the information. Best regards, Debby

Mary Frances Hewes

I am looking for any information regarding my Grandmother Mary Frances Hewes born April 14, 1892 in Massawippi, Quebec, Mary was a domestic servant for the Hamm Family (Henry & Delia) on the 1901 canadian census Stanstead # 195 hatley F-2 PAGE 1. I have located a Hewes (Hewer transcription error) Family in the 1891 Census located in Stanstead # 190 Hatley District. I am interested in this Hewes (Hewer) family because after the 1891 Census the Family's trail goes cold, also the Hamm family that my Grandmother was domestic servant for is on the same census page in 1891 as the Hewes (Hewer) family, on the 1891 Census page their is a son named Frederich aged 8 and my Grandmother had a brother named Frederick. On the census their is a female age 3 but the name is illegable. Lastly Mr. W.R. Hewes died Sept. 22, 1896, the year my Grandmother was supposed to have been "adopted" out to the Hamm Family. Any information or leads on the Hewes (Hewer) or Hamm family would be greatly appreciated. My grandmother Mary Frances Hewes married Harold Arthur Yetter in New Port, Vermont 1915. Thank you, Debby McGuire

Wondered if you might be able to point me in a useful direction -
My great-grandfather Harley Holbrook was a widower (in his late 70s) from Beebe Plains and married Cora Sullivan from Coaticook in 1945. I have no idea where or when he died, and would appreciate any leads.
Thanks!
Lee Whitcomb

Hi Darlene,
Glad you could use that info. I got it from Drouin. There is likely more in there that I can find, too. If you are researching in Quebec, the fee to use Drouin is very worthwhile. You use it through the Ancestry site, and I no longer remember how I paid for it or what the cost was. It contains birth, marriage and death records from churches of all denominations throughout Quebec. Of course, there are missing years in some churches, but the amount of information it contains is astounding. I will attach the files for Bristol here. You can see his signature and so forth, since these are the actual church records. Let me know if you do not receive them and I will try some other way.

I found a little something about Bristol. His name was Bristol Brown Smith (makes him easier to find, doesn't it). He was married twice - first to Margaret Burton Miller, in Quebec City on November 2, 1921. He was a bachelor of major age and a telegraph operator. Margaret was the daughter of William Robert Miller of Kilmarnock, Scotland. Margaret died "at her home in Coaticook" on June 24, 1924, and is buried in Mount Forest Cemetery. Then, on June 22, 1927, to Dorothy Iola Dougherty. He was the son of William Smith and Etta Victoria Brown, and he was, at the time of his marriage to Dorothy, a widower of major age and a Customs officer. All three are buried in Mount Forest Cemetery:
http://www.interment.net/data/canada/qc/stanstead/mtforest/f...

Hi M. Horne......

Your reply to my msg. has GREAT timing as I've been in touch with a desc. from William bro. Bryant side. As from my previous msg., you'll know I'm a desc. from Richard Greenleaf's side (other bro. to William).

We've been trying to figure out who some of our unknown pictures are of & put names, if we can, on them.

I would really like hearing from you again & was wondering if you wouldn't mind e-mailing me at dwnautomation@on.aibn.com

Also, I want to thank you so much for the info you gave me.

In your msg., I noticed you had William's middle initial H. Do you know what that stands for? I didn't know whether if his middle name initial was an 'H' or an 'F'!

Hope you can e-mail me. I'll be looking forward to hearing from you.

Darlene

Bristol Brown Smith was the younger brother of my grandfather Merritt Homer Smith. They had an older brother named Charles. All 3 boys were the children of William H. Smith and his wife Etta Victoria (Brown) Smith. Their father William H. was the brother of Richard Greenleaf Smith. Bristol's first wife died in childbirth (along with the baby) and I don't know what her name was. His second wife's first name was Dorothy, but her last name is unknown. His marriage to Dorothy is most likely what the 1926 record refers to. Bristol never had any other children than the one that died at birth. Charles was married and had one son named Frank; no one knows the name of his wife. She abandoned both Charles and Frank shortly after Frank was born. Charles was killed in a hunting accident about 1918 when Frank was still an infant and Frank was raised by his grandmother Etta Victoria Smith.
Merritt left Coaticook as a young man for health reasons. He suffered from TB and was told he would die unless he moved to a drier climate. He settled in Alberta, Canada after WWI and married Lillian Lane in 1921. They had 3 children -- Stanley Merritt, Marion Lauretta, and Norma Lillian. My mother, Marion L., is the last surviving great grandchild of William and Etta Smith.

M.
Hi - I was wondering if you had any information on Henry Douglas McLevin born 17 Sep 1890 East Zorra to John Clarkson McLevin, (son of Donald McLevin and Margaret Hoodless)and Mary Smith and died 3 Apr 1917 of TB. Douglas was the brother of William Robert McLevin who married Jesse Catherine MacDonald and had three sons John Douglas, Bruce and Malcolm Finley McLevin. He married Etta Pearl Smith from Coaticook Quebec. Douglas is buried in Coaticook next to his wife (who died 3 months later of TB also). I have been able to obtain a copy of Pearl's death record (Drouin) but not their marriage record or Douglas' death record. I would like a photo of Douglas to compare with some photos I have to confirm identity. K.M. Smith
I tried some searches and lots of items came up but had no luck in actually bringing up a page with information on person. Maybe some day when I can devote hours and hours of my time I will figure out how this site works. Very complex. I am in the middle of another research project now.

I found quite a few patents on the site for my great grandfather FRANK H. SLEEPER there but couldn't figure out how to access them. No matter, I already have all his Canadian patents that I obtained from the Canadian patent office back in 2002. I just thought I would use him to experiment with the site.

Thanks again for thinking of me, I have become a collector of data and this was certainly of interest because it explained what LEWIS SLEEPER was up to before the Acton Mine.

Best regards,
Jacki Russell

Jacqueline Sleeper Russell
Website: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SRCH&amp...

Good day Jacqueline

Was browsing for Rev.March in the townships and saw the Sleeper name. Of course I tought of you. I then search for your posts and saw the details of the life of Lewis and the reference to the Geological Survey which is the text I was reading on ECO website. Here it is, another bit of the Townships history.

http://www.canadiana.org/ECO/PageView/8_05122_29/0049?id=ac4...

Enjoy

Ginette

Hi.....

Are you on the Ancestry site which now has the Quebec vitals? If so, it may take some searching as the records are not indexed yet, you may be able to find some info on their marriage & deaths.

I have checked the cemetery records on-line, as you probably have, but haven't seen them mentioned.

I'll keep my opens open for any info I come across on this couple.

Darlene

Basically anything I can find. I have the same death date for Amplius Bliss although I haven't found his burial site. I have no information on Lavina except that she was the daughter of Rev. John Gilson and his wife Mary and was born about 1805 in Comptom.

Hi.....

I noticed that Lavina is widowed by 1881 census & having with probably her son & his family in Compton Twp., Compton Co., Quebec.

On LDS, it says that Lavina's husb. d. 1879. I don't know yet where he is buried but must be around Compton somewhere.

What info are you missing or looking for on the family?

Darlene

As far as I know they lived in this area (Compton, Barnston, and Moe's River) and did not move to the US down to my grandfather who moved to the Derby Vermont area in 1923. Amplius Bliss would have been his great-grandfather.

Hi Beverly......

Sorry Bev, I don't have any other info other than Lovina m. Amplius Bliss.

They are listed in the c1851 Compton Twp., Sherbrooke Co., Quebec but after that I don't have any info but then I must admit I haven't had time to do any searching.

I'm only connected to this family through family members & marriage :-)

I've pretty well figured out that my connection is through Samuel Gilson who m. Jerusha (Gilson) who had a son John who m. Sophia (Chesley). I'm connected through a sister of Sophia's.

Do you know if they lived in this area for some time or did they move to the US at some point?

Darlene

I do not have any information on Philanda Lovell, but I've been hunting for information on the Rev. John Gilson for several years and haven't found much. I am a direct descendant of his daughter, Lovina. Do you by any chance have any more information?

Beverly Bliss Smith

I would very much like to learn more about Mrs Hanks. She is listed in the 1881 census as a widow, living in Coaticook with her daughter Etta, aged 14, and Lee Bailey, a labourer, aged 21. I am especially interested in Lee Bailey and what became of him. I suspect he may be the brother of my great-grandfather. If you are connected with the Hanks family or Lee Bailey, I would love to hear from you.
