I am curious to learn about any local information regarding the failed Norwegian settlement at Gaspe - Coin du Banc, during 1860-62. I was recently in Coin du Banc and didn't meet anyone with any memory of the settlement, except for one man that remembered a road/trail from Douglastown into the forest nicknamed "the Norwegian road". The Canadian Government arranged for a group of more than 100 settlers to buy land in the forest. However the conditions were very difficult and promises were not kept, as the story goes, so "all" of the families apparently left in 1862. My ancestors were part of the Brandt and Brun families that attempted to settle with this group. They ended up in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
