Thanks for your response. I didn't know that Hicks was widespread in Canada. My mom always wondered why her French Canadian ancestors had Hicks as a last name, it doesn't seem French. I looked up the origin and found an article that said that Hicks derives from "X", which was the appellation given to the illegitimate children of King Richard. That, of course, doesn't really help me place my GG Grandparents.
Further complicating matters, I have some tin types of this branch of the Hicks family, and they look like they could be First Nation. That means the marriages and births may not be recorded in Parish registries. Sigh. ~
