So nice have another person to share the search with. I'm hoping you wouldn't mind sharing your notes with me. I would love to see them. Please check out my tree "Johnson Hall Family tree". From what I can gather, you and your mother are descendants of William, John's oldest son. I have some interesting Correspondence regarding William that appears to have been written by John while William was in the US Army. Please let me know what you think and feel free to share anything you may think might help me in my search as well. Thanks! Patty Harrington

I too, am looking for information on John Gilwee of Quebec and Mary Magee could Mary be Margaret? From Sligo and to Quebec possibly early 1820s. My mom - Mary Katherine Gilwee(now passed) went to Sligo and did some hunting, I have her notes. Name possibly from Kilwee, Kilawee, Gilvey?

So far the best match for Casimir is the Casimir Denault that shows up in the Drouin Collection in St-Luc.

His siblings would be Paul Denault and Rosaline Denault. His parents are Paul Denault and Rose Brosseau.

This disagrees with all other Ancestry family trees I can find, but I can't find anyone with a citation for who they link as Casimir's parents.

The problem with this person is he's rather far east. I cannot find any reason why he should move west to Fort Coulonge.

But Wikipedia states that Fort Coulonge was resupplied from Montreal.

I'm rereading this thread and I'm wondering if this is the same child.

I have the name down as Moses Frost, born May 12, 1840, in Quebec. He's the son of Samuel Frost and Mary Hudson/Hodgson.

The birthdate is wrong, but not too far off, and I've seen birthdate discrepencies before that have survived later research.

Unfortunately, while everything matches up, there's no other children born at the same location and no further collaborating evidence. This appears to be a "maybe".

Hello,

I found Margaret Mary Joan Turner, sister of Henry Sidney Turner. Margaret born May 14, 1916, bap, in Grand-Mere April 4, 1917, Henry Sidney b. April 4, 1919, b: Sep 28, 1919.
They are children of Henry Turner & Annie Nelson: Annie died Sep 16, 1952 in Grand-Mere.
May be you could find out the tombstone in Grand Mere cemetery ?
Also I found the death of John Henry Turner, safety supervisor for the Consolidated Paper, in Grand-Mère who died at 63 years old, Jan 21, 1938. Could be related to Henry Turner & Margaret Joan Turner !!

Good luck in your research,
Thank-you, daciodan. I have heard of "dit" names, but this didn't say, "dit" so I didn't think of that. Thank-you very much. (After I posted this request, it occurred to me that it's an Ontario record, and I posted it in the Quebec area of posts; but it's a family from Quebec; and, as it happens, it is your knowledge of French culture that provided the answer, so I guess there was method to my madness. ;-) )

Sincerely,
Jean

Hi Cáit,

I tried to e-mail you but the message got returned. You can e-mail me at marc80@ely-harris.com

It was very nice to hear from you. I am Yvonne & Trevor’s 3rd son and George & Dorothy are my grandparents, my Mum also has a sister Jackie. I’ve been doing the family tree on both sides of the family for a while now so it’s really good to be able to chat with you. I am happy to share anything with you that I have.

I will speak to Mum and let her know that you have been in contact although I don’t know anything about the past so maybe you or her could fill me in?!! Grandad George passed away in October 1980 as you already know and now Nan is with him, she lived another 31 years after his death and passed away in December 2011 aged 94. My Dad, Trevor, passed away in March 2004 aged 51 from cancer. Mum doesn’t live in Salt Box Close anymore but doesn’t live far away and is married again. I have many happy memories of Barns Green and spent the first 19 years of my life there.

Would be great to hear back from you with some background information, are we related?

Thanks,

Marc
One surname is a "dit" of the other. Lapointe is a "dit" of Godard. "Dits" can be recorded interchangeably or on their own. The use of a "dit" in 1913 is curious, this practice was mostly abandoned in the later 19th Century.

In regard to how to record it, use the name the individual was known by, but you want notation of the both surnames, his ancestors used both, this will help you search the line back.

Turner (b. 4/7/1919) married Gilberte Quesnel (b. 12/12/1920) on 5/7/1949. Gilberte died 1/22/1975

Harry Turner (b. 4/7/1919) married Marie Paule Hould (b. 3/3/1926) on 10/1/1977.

Do a google search on Harry Turner Grand-Mere and you get an address in Quebec and some newspaper mentions.

Marrs or Mars or Le Mar or Les Mars, Samuel S., b. abt 1821 - parents/family in French-speaking area?

I am looking for a Marrs connection somewhere in Ontario or Quebec, to see if I can find some info on the family of Samuel S. Marrs, b. abt 1821, Ohio, d. between 1855-1860, unknown location. Perhaps he is buried with family Canada, or perhaps someone in Canada knows of his family. I can find no family info on him in the United States, and was told by a family member (word of mouth from someone else, I believe) that his last name might have been French. Since he was born in Ohio, I'm looking above that to Canada to the French-speaking area. It's just a long shot, but it's all I have. I can find no specific birth or death info on him, so what I do have (born in Ohio) could be wrong. Perhaps he was even born in Canada.

My grandfather was orphaned at the age of 4. Oral family history states that his only recollection was that he and his older brother went on a train to an orphanage in Canada. He was Catholic and was from Waterville, Maine. I can not find any record of he or his brother in Canada or the USA or any border crossing records until the 1920 US census in which they were 18 yrs old. Any advice as to how I can verify this story or find a record of an orphanage?

Hi, my family is in the same family line as yours. I've traced it back to France and have found no Indians in the lineage. i did see a reference to the first Rochereau (which was the spelling in France vs leau) that came to Canada and in August 18th 1652 was captured by 8 Iroquois. The trip was documented by a Jesuit priest and is in a book "The Jesuit Relations & Allied Documents on page 460. Here is the link to page 460 in that book. I had always heard there was an Indian in our lineage especially since my father had flat feet, but never found anything that confirmed it.

http://books.google.com/books?id=0mKKVnHcc8gC&pg=PA460&a...

Hope this helps with your search

Rich Rocheleau
email richrocky@comcast.net

I was poking around other family trees on Ancestry, and I found this:

http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...

That gives a Margaret Denault being born to Casimer Denault and Mary Pack near the right region.

Here's a bit of collaborating evidence for it being "Pack" and not "Paquin".

There's the 1891 Canadian census for Mary (DENAULT) FROST, the daughter of Mary Denault, where her mother's birthplace is listed as England. (Mary and her husband Moses were living in Rat Portage, Ontario at the time, the record is on ancestry). I want to say I have one other source that lists England as her mother's birthplace, but I can't find it at this time.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm thinking "Pack" is more likely than "Paquin" for an English name. But maybe French speakers would spell her surname as "Paquin" in census records?
