Hi Hugh.
I searched for James' roots this morning, and I may have something to offer.
I saw that some other people had researched James at WorldConnect at http://tinyurl.com/6kdzg9. One person listed James' wife's, Rachel, parents as Hannah and Philander Stephens. In that same file, the children of James & Rachel were listed as Thomas, Hannah, Margaret, Janet, and Philander. When I removed the names Hannah and Philander, Thomas, Margaret and Janet were left.
Next, I searched through the Drouin Collection at Ancestry.ca for records of James. I didn't find anything new. I then went to ScotlandsPeople and searched for the birth or an early marriage of James with no success.
I went back to the Lachute Cemetery transcription, to review the burial entry for James. I remembered seeing an elderly Thomas Pollock buried near him. James, Rachel and their son Thomas were #289 in the index; James' sister Margaret was #288, and the elderly Thomas and his wife Margaret were #287.
The entry for Thomas and Margret in the Lachute transcription was worded as follows: 287. Thomas Pollock died December 28, 1886 or 1836 aged 71 years also his wife Margret RUSSEL died July 18, 1888 or 1838 Native of (----) Scotland.
I went back to ScotlandsPeople to look for the marriage of Thomas and Margret. They were married on June 13, 1795, in Paisley High Church, Renfrew County. That means that the above dates of death would have been in the 1830s. At the time of the marriage, Thomas was a grocer.
Next at ScotlandsPeople, I searched for children born to Thomas and Margret. I found one birth, for John, born on May 22, 1801. (He was baptized on May 26, 1901.) I searched for births from 1795 - 1820. I thought this would cover James' birth, which has been listed as 1802 or 1812.
In summary, I can't really say whether Thomas Pollock is the father of James. Several things point to that. If James is the son of Thomas and he is not the "John" on the 1801 birth record, he may have been born in Canada or on the way to Canada.
You might try posting to the Renfrew, Scotland, message board, to see if you can make any connections to relatives of the Pollock or RUSSEL families.
I noticed that there were Irish Pollocks in the Drouin Collection, so I'd be careful in sorting out the families.
If you find that Thomas and Margret are related to you, you may be able to find their birth records and parents' and siblings' names at ScotlandsPeople. You would begin your search in Renfew County.
Also, I checked Cyrus Thomas' _History of the Counties of Argenteuil, Quebec, and Prescott, Ontario_. There were brief mentions of the Pollocks on page 204, and of the Stephens on page 207.
I have copies of the indexes from ScotlandsPeople and the marriage record of Thomas & Margret and the birth record of John, if you would like them. You could email me at fearoffrying@yahoo.com.
I hope this information will move your research along.
