They were also Farming I in Cote du Midi and my greatgrandfather
married a Margaret Cameron and he may of purchased some land from a Cameron living in Cote du Midi. Do you have any information on a Margaret Cameron who married a John McLean or any information on a Mary Cameron who married a McLean?

Sarah Ann married Roderick Cameron in Grenville in 1867.

I have further references to the Fox's. I will be happy to send you what I have, if you to contact me at dingo_dog@sympatico.ca.

Hi Debbie

Jolys Farm was torn down about the time that the land was being taken for the Mirabel Airport. The manmade lake was across the river at Colford lodge.I remember those blood suckers well. We used to bring a salt shaker and pour salt on them so they would fall off.I never went to Joly's Farm but I grew up in the area.
There is a house on the site about where the old house was located.

Les

Hi Danny.

My copies of the transcriptions of St. Mungo's United Church Cemetery, St. Matthew's Anglican Church Cemetery, and the Scotch Road Cemetery came from the Ottawa Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society in 2004.
Hi Danny.

I didn't find the surname "Bailey" in the Avoca, Edendale, Lachute, Lost River, Ogdensburg, St. Mary's, or St. Mungo's cemetery transcriptions.

According to the St. Mungo's cemetery transcription, the earliest burial in the cemetery was 1800. I think that is a mistake. The church was erected in 1836. The woman who is listed as "died Apr. 1800, aged 88 yrs" is buried next to her husband who "died April, 1845, aged 84 yrs."

Is it possible that Charles married his first wife before he immigrated to Chatham? If they were Scotch, ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk is a good place to search.

Marlene Simmons has some records for Argenteuil county in her database. A searchable index to her database is online at http://simmons.b2b2c.ca/. There were many "hits" for "Bailey." I don't want to give you false hope. In addition to some records for Argenteuil County, the database contains records for the Eastern Townships and Vermont. Since you don't know Charles' wife's given name, Marlene would charge you a one-hour minimum research fee to see if she could match up any of those entries to your Charles.

Good luck with your search.

Bonnie

Hello to all

I am researching Charles Bailey widower, who married Lucinda Leavitt in 1830. Both were residents of Chatham Twp. What I am looking for is Charles' first wife. I found Charles in the 1825 census and married, so his first wife would have died between 1825 and 1830. He was presbyterian so I am assuming perhaps his first wife was also. Anybody have access to a transcription of the tonbstones at St-Mungo cemetery? Not even sure if it goes that far back in time. Am hoping for a transcription with a name, "beloved wife of Charles Bailey". Thanks

Danny

Hi Karen.

It has happened that the person of interest has, in fact, been buried in the Lachute Cemetery but did not appear in the transcription. The transcription was copyrighted in 1992.

I went back to the transcripton and looked under the names Emma Dixon and Emma Walker---just in case---but did not see a burial for Alma.

I looked at the census images for Alma Dixon in 1901 and 1911. They list her year of birth as 1898. She would have been 45 when Charles died. Do you know if she remarried?

I would have liked to have checked the Drouin Collection at Ancestry.com for a possible burial record, but the Drouin Collection has been taken off line---for how long I don't know.

The census records listed Alma's religion as Baptist. If she remained Baptist after she married, that is another avenue that you might pursue: Baptist church records.

Others who monitor this board live near the cemetery. One of them might take a look for you. I don't know anything about the Lachute Cemetery office, but perhaps you could call the office and ask if Alma is buried there.

Bonnie

Hi Karen.

I found these two entries in the Lachute Cemetery transcription:

667. John McQuat DREW M.D. February 27, 1879–September 13, 1938, and his wife Ruth Rae WALKER February 14, 1890–December 14, 1936 "Love understands love; it needs no talk"

The map of Lachute Cemetery shows Highway 158 facing south. The cemetery is divided into two sides. Grave 667 in on the right side (west) section, the section closest to the highway. The office is on the left side, farther south.

1790. WALKER Charles beloved husband of Alma DIXON October 11, 1885–May 27, 1943 "None knew thee but to love thee"

There are 3 sections heading south of Hwy. 158 on the right side of the cemetery. Charles is buried in the 3rd section, the southern-most section of the cemetery.

I didn't find a burial entry for Alma. In the index, under WALKER, I looked for first name Alma or first initial A, and middle name Alma or middle or subsequent initials A without success. I didn't find a listing for her under DIXON, either.

I hope this helps a little.

Bonnie

My gg grandparents were William Fox and Christian "Kate" McPhail. The only info I have is that he was born in England ab 1812 and d in Grenville, QC Aug 9 1899. For my gg grandmother, I have that she was born about 1820 in Scotland and died before 1881. They had 9 children, Thomas, Sarah Ann, Mary, William, Donald, Martha, John "Jack", Christiana and Elizabeth. I am looking for any information regarding when they arrived in Canada and if possible, exactly where they came from. Their son Thomas was born in 1840 in Quebec so they had to be here by then.

I realize it's a stretch asking for this kind of info but all one can do is ask.

Thanks

Hello Bonnie

Yes I have looked for deaths of Robert, Duncan and Elizabeth Faser in Scotland, but nothing. I have no proof that those three did emigrate to Canada (or elsewhere), but with the brothers in Canada it is possible. Killin is very bad for records, no cemetery transcriptions and I did visit the old kirk yard 3 years ago, in a disgrceful condition with many gravestone fallen down and many ilegible.

Many thanks for your advice and links. Unfortunately I haven't managed much family history research of late due to family health commitments and also my daighter's marriage last Friday, we have just returned from several days "up north" where the marriage took place in Aberdeenshire. Hopefully I will get bak to it soon, I am missing it so much, and will try all your suggestions. Your help is appreciated.

I hvaen't had much luck with RootsWeb but have never tried GenForum so will look into that.

Thanks again

Liz

FJohn

Apparently there were several Fraser families in St Andrews East, Argenteuil. My blacksmith great-great-grand-uncle John Fraser (b 1810, Killin, Perthshire) married an Anne (Nancy) Fraser born 1811 St Andrews East. I think her family originated from Inverness-shire, Scotland. Their four children were born in St Andrews East 1834-1839 and Nancy died there in 1892. Burial site unknown.

Date and cause of John Fraser's death unknown, His youngest child was born 4 February 1839 so he was obviously alive in 1838. After that....

I cannot get further back with my Frasers from Killin, Perthshire than 1783. For reasons unknown there are no Killin Parih records of marriages between 1717 and November 1782. A great disappointment. Nor did Killin Parish ever keep pre-1855 death records. But it is very probable that my Killin Fraser roots go back in time to further north than Perthshire, many Frasers in Inverness-shire in particular as well as elswhere. Many who supported and fought for the Jacobite cause in 1715 and particularly 1745 fled further south, emigrated.

Liz in Scotland
I'm descended from a William Fraser, born in 1818 in Keith, Banffshire, husband of Elizabeth Wardrope Young, (b. 1823) of Stirling. I'm not sure of the year they moved to Argenteuil, Qc, or even if they were married there, but all of their children were born there, beginning in 1843. I have a family portrait of the Wm. Frasers taken in Lachute in about 1887, posted on my Ancestry.com tree, named "JG". I hadn't realized that there were Argenteuil Frasers that were originally from Perthshire, rather than Banffshire.
My ancestor William was son of a John Fraser, born 1794, also in Banffshire. John and (I believe) most of his descendants settled around the Lachute area of Quebec in the early to mid 1800s.

I think it was transcribed in 1980. Anyway, Kate and here husband were nowhere to be found in the list. It makes me wonder how mucg I should trust some of those lists. :-(
Her Name then became Adelaide Meade.

Eventually she married Timothy Pilon and Moved to Quebec Canada.

If anyone knows who her birth parents were please let me know. I seem to have hit a dead end and any hints would be appreciated.
Researching John HAMMOND who married Mary Ann BEATTIE/Beaty/Beatty on December 24, 1835 in Lachute, Quebec. Who were John Hammond's parents and who were Mary Ann's parents? I have the names and dates for births of ten of their children. There were two John Hammonds in the Gore at this time. One married Mary Ann Beattie and the other married Dinah Perry. One was the son of Matthew Hammond and Jane Madill. Am anxious to find which John Hammond was Matthew's son and then to find the parentage of the other John Hammond.
Hammond researchers seem divided on this question.

Nice researching, Colleen.

I wonder if Hugh CAMERON, farmer, born Scotland, age 35, and Jane MCVANE, born Scotland, age 25, in the 1851 census of Canada, sheet 2, stamped page 3, in St. André, Deux Montagnes, are the parents of the children you listed. If so, Jane must have been pregnant at the time the census was enumerated, 12 January 1852.

Further down the list of Camerons on sheet 2, there is a Hugh CAMERON, age 65, born Scotland, and his wife Elizabeth MCKINNON. More children follow their names, so I doubt this Hugh is he father of the above Hugh, even considering a 2nd marriage for the senior Hugh, but they could be related.

I'll include the Camerons from sheet 2 below.

Line 11	Hugh Cameron	Farmer	SCT	35	Married
12	Jane McVane SCT	25	Married
13	Mary Cameron CAN	20
14	Duncan Cameron	Laborer	CAN	24
15	John Cameron	Laborer	CAN	22
16	Laughlin CameronFarmer CAN	20
17	John Cameron	Farmer	SCT	30	Married
18	Jane Graham CAN	31	Married
19	Laughlin CameronLaborer	CAN	14
20	Walter Cameron CAN	12
21	Mary Cameron CAN	10
22	John Cameron CAN 8
23	Jane Cameron CAN 6
24	Archibald Cameron	CAN 4
25	Nancy Cameron CAN 2
26	Jeannet Cameron CAN 1
27	Hugh Cameron	Farmer	SCT	65	Married
28	Elizabeth McKinnen	SCT	46	Married
29	Ewen Cameron	Laborer	CAN	23
30	Donald Cameron	Laborer	CAN	18
31	John Cameron	Laborer	CAN	16
32	Alexander CameronLaborerCAN	14
33	Henry Cameron CAN 5
34	Mary Cameron CAN	25
35	Christian Cameron	CAN	21
36	Sarah Cameron CAN 8
37	Elisabeth Cameron	CAN 6
38	Catherine Cameron	CAN 2

Once this family gets sorted out, it would be nice to have it on WorldConnect.

Best regards,

Bonnie
Hi Donna and Colleen.

I was Googling around and found Cecil McPhee's story, _The Wreck Of the Brig Earl Of Dalhousie_ online at http://tinyurl.com/mms9zz. (I believe the story is posted at the Scotch Road Cemetery Website.) In the story, Cecil documents the drama surrounding his McPhee ancestor's journey from Scotland to Argenteuil County. He mentions the Camerons and shows them on a passenger list. I don't know if the Camerons documented by Cecil are related to your line of Camerons, but it might be something to consider as you get further into your research.

Best regards,

Bonnie

Hi Colleen.

If you would like to give me the time frame for Margaret Cameron's birth, I could check to see if one of the Margaret Camerons in Lloyd MacRae's GEDCOM from a while back has a fit.

The St. Matthew's Anglican Church Cemetery transcription has a paragraph on the Presbyterian Church. It mentions Rev. Mair. You probably already do this: I go to the first page of the church register, where the minister is listed, to get the spelling of the minister's name. I save a copy of the first page as proof of the year of the register and for the name of the church and of the minister.

Bonnie

Hi Louise.

If there's a chance that Addie was born in New York City, you could try requesting her birth record from http://www.health.state.ny.us/vital_records/genealogy.htm.

Again, if you think that she was placed in an orphanage in NYC, you could try Googling "New York City Orphanage," and see if you can find any lists of the residents for the time you are interested in. You might try Google Books, as well.

You might also try the USGenWeb for New York and see if they have any databases for orphanages or records for the surname Laight.

It wouldn't hurt to post messages to the Laight surname message boards at RootsWeb and GenForum. I didn't check to see if there was a message board for "Laight" on GenForum, but there is one on RootsWeb.

I looked at the New York City death index at ItalianGen.org, but I didn't see anyone in the database that might have been of age to be Addie's parents. I checked the bride and groom index there, too, but didn't see anything. You could double check that database. I didn't have luck at FamilySearch or at the FamilySearch Record Search Pilot site.

Since it appears that her parents were born in Ireland, perhaps you could check the immigration and passenger lists at Ancestry for immigrants with the surname "Laight." You could check the 1880 census on the chance that her father was in the U.S. by 1880. There is also the chance that her mother was a single mother. In that case, you'd be looking for a female with the surname Laight.

Have you traced Mrs. Meade's whereabouts before she adopted Addie? That might lead to clues about Addie's mother.

I hope this helps a little.

Bonnie

Hi.

You might have some luck with researching each of William and Kate's children. Perhaps someone who has researched the family through one of the children has that information. For example, daughter Sarah Ann married Roderick Cameron (Drouin Collection database at Ancestry.ca). Maybe a Cameron family researcher could help.

You could check at RootsWeb's WorldConnect free database of family trees at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi to see if you can find someone who has researched an associated family.

If you haven't already tried FamilySearch.org, you might try there.

If Ancestry.ca still offers a free, two-week trial, you could look through their database for more information on the children. In addition to birth, marriage and death information, there are some family trees posted there that might offer some clues or connections. It's a good idea to make sure you have plenty of time and have your information fairly well organized before beginning the free trial so you can make the most of it. Be sure to cancel the trial offer by the cancellation date or your charge card will be charged.

Your library may have the free library edition of Ancestry.ca or Ancestry.com.

One last thought is whether anything about William or Kate's place of origin was written on their tombstones. In looking through the cemetery transciptions for the area, I didn't come across entries for either of them. Their stones could have fallen or disintegrated. If there was something written on them, perhaps someone researching one of the childen made mention of it.

I hope these ideas will help you find the information.

Bonnie

Hi Liz.

Have you checked the cemetery records in Killin for the missing family members? I don't doubt that they immigrated to Canada, but you could rule out their deaths in Scotland while you are waiting for something to turn up. I was disappointed to see that the LDS library catalog didn't have any films of cemetery transcriptions in Killin.

You could try to check for their burials in Montreal at the Mount Royal Cemetery. Currently, it looks as if you can only inquire about one burial at a time for free. This is their Web address http://www.mountroyalcem.com/products_services/genealogy/ind....

You could also try the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid at http://www.islandnet.com/ocfa/homepage.html.

For a fee, the Quebec Family History Society could do a search for you.
Hi.

To cast a wider net, I wonder if you have also posted similar queries to each of the surnames boards for all of the surnames involved in your search at RootsWeb and to the place name and surname boards at GenForum. The place name boards should include the county of origin in Ireland, if you know it. There is also the Surname List at RootsWeb at http://rsl.rootsweb.ancestry.com/. You may know that you can search the previous posts to the surname and place name boards, as well.

Have you already checked to see what research has been posted at WorldConnect at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/? I note there is a family tree there for John Hammond married to Dinah. The owner of the tree is Velma.

When you are researching that far back, it would be great if one of the descendants had recorded the names you seek. You have probably already looked into that possibility.

I wish you luck with your research.

Bonnie

I am not sure at this time if I am related or not. My greatgrandfather John McLean married a Margaret Cameron in St. Andrews East so I am still trying to figure it all out.

I have found the following marriage entry for Ewan Cameron and Jane McVean. They were married in Chatham, Ottawa River East on 22 April 1851 and the minister was William Mair or it could me Muir its hard to read the signature.

Hi Donna,
I have found three more children of Ewan and Jane Cameron they are Alexander Cameron born 6 July 1859, also John Cameron date of birth unknow around 1856 and Jane Cameron birth unknown born around 1867. I don't know if you have the census for the Argenteuil area but in the 1871 census our families are living two farms over from each other in the Cote du Midi area I know my ggrandfather bought his land from a Cameron. If you would like information from the census let me know.

I have just started to do my ancestry and just saw your name asking for McMartin and McEwen.

My Great Grandfather was Donald McEwen who was born in St Andrews, Argentieul in 1821. He married Elizabeth McMartin In Argenteuil in 1891. Donald took over the family farm on River Rouge. If this is who you are looking for I have quite a bit of information on the McEwens and am willing to share anything I have. Joyce

I'm looking for info on Joly's Farm, located near St. Scholastic near Lachute, Quebec. My mom spent her summers there as a young girl in the 1950's. I don't think it exists anymore. Any info on the family, or farm would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Debbie Keillar

No they weren't related. My mom just went their with her parents when she was a young girl in the 1950s.
It was near St. Canut (now Mirabel),not far from Lachute.

Actually, we were in the area today and were able to locate where the farm had been situated. There had been a restaurant/lodge across from the farm, and it (Colford Lodge) is still there. The owner remembered the Joly farm. It closed in 1969. The gov't expropriated the land for Mirabel airport. The farm was apparently burned down, not sure if by government or the family.

The Joly Farm housed about 20 rooms that could be rented out by families. My mom remembers a dining room, swimming in the river (or manmade lake) and going horseback riding from the Colford Lodge.

The land now houses a private residence and its businesses.

I don't remember her name, but it did start with D, so was either Diane or Denise. I believe she was the wife of the owner who had passed away. She had white hair. Hair was combed up and back, may have been curly in back, but I didn't notice. She was kind enough to bring out some books with photographs of the area, including the farm, and another with the Joly family. One of those commemorative type books for a town. It was either for St. Canut or St. Columban, and covered 1887 - 1987.

Leeches - yucck! I'll have to ask my mom if she remembers them. She does remember taking riding lessons. During one, a jeep spooked the horse and she was thrown. She was okay and my grandfather put her back in the saddle.
