Hello Andrew
It is difficult to prove native ancestry through church documentation as it was policy of the catholic church to extinguish native identies. My name is Michael and am a direct descendant of Charles Darabi/Daraby/Laraby/Guillaume.In Drouin on the side column is the variations of the names he went by including sanachaggia which is Mic-mac for Squinty eyed warrior. you will find that he fought in the war of 1812 and you can read about it in the canadian gazette or the american version of the story of Tecumseh. In the military records after the Battle of Thames he served in Kingston as a canon operator. As for Marie Blain she is the step-mother of Josephte Brunet/Brinet/Bisset whose mother was Marie Raphaelle Lauzon whose father was Michel Lauzon and mother Marie Anne Boileau Coitu. I spent many hours at National Archives in Ottawa checking documents besides church records and i can say that marriage records will rarely identify any first nations marriages especially if they are mixed blood. I have had DNA testing and can say that there is definitely native ancestry in the Larabie/Laraby/Daraby line but have fun trying to prove it the conventional way. The state (Canadian Government), the Church (RC) and cultural prejudices forced first nations people who did not want to live on reserves to hide their true heritage and become "French". As for Louis Alexis Guillaume ou Daraby, he married Marguerite Richer daughter of Jean Baptiste Richer dit Louveteau.Good Luck. Marie Blain is not her mother but her aunt or step-mother or aunt.
There is a possibility that marie rapheal lauzon whose grandmother was Marie Archambault. Many disagree about wether Jacques Archambault who married Francoise Toureault had wedded her in france or in new france. According to the
Jesuit relations Jacques may have been in the New World prior to the conventional arrival date most sites give. In the Jesuit Relations most of their childred were born and baptised in New France. The Garneau Metis Families History plays upon this discrempency and list Marie Archambault as
Metis.

Hi Jeff,

I believe your latching on to the wrong tree. The James Martin who married Louise-Emma Lemaire was b. 1832 in Ireland, so his parents are not James Martin and Brigette Brady, whose son James was born 1845 in Canada.

Sorry, I have only 1 George Gravell and he was the son of Napoleon Gravel and Rose Delima Labrosse. They lived in Ontario, Canada but he must have come to the US as he died in the war, some time between 1914 and 1918. He was born in 1899 so he would have only been between 15 and 19. His parents did not come to the US.

Sorry it has taken me a while to respond but I'll do the best I can.
OKA is a town.

Kanesatake is the Reserve the Mohawks live in beside Oka the town.

L'Annociate Parion? Do you mean La paroisse L'Annonciation de Bienheureuse Vierge Marie de Oka? That is the Roman Catholic Church in OKA.

I would say that OKA records also includes Kanesatake.

The Algonquin summered on the other side of OKA. Kanesatake was on the left side and the Algonquin were on the right side of OKA. The Algonquin referred to OKA as Deux Montaigne back then. Most Algonquin were Catholic and were baptized, married and interned in the Catholic Church.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe most of the Mohawk pulled away from the Catholic Church after a while.

I also know that some of the families in Trois Rivieres were Algonquin. They were brought to Trois Riviers by the priests but it was in the middle of winter and there was no food or shelter for them and they returned to their original area.

Marguerite Nipawikwe-Ounipaouikon married Pinessi (Pierre Louis Constant) He was Algonquin. Marguerite most likely took on Pineslikwe after her marriage to Pinessi. I think Winkaawikwe is close enough to be her. Spelling was given the way a person thought it was, depending on who spelled their names, priests, census takers, neighbors or relatives giving information to census takers.
Jean Baptiste Kikons was Pinessi and Marguerite's son. His wife was Anastasie Kikonsikwe. Their daughter Marguerite Kijiitinokwe.
Jean Baptiste had a brother named Simon Chawenasiketch who married Marie Angelique Ozabikwe. I don't know if the Simon in the 1852 Census is the same one.

Are you connected to this family?

The children of john amikwabi, michaels son have lived at french river since the 1840 s, i live on the french river ir#13

I was wondering if there is native blood here? There's always speculation here... but this is especially difficult since there are edits made to the Drouin collection books - the original copies. In the Church record entry it says the original information, but it is edited in the Drouin Collection marriage lists in the copies at the local Genealogy Centre... Showing Charles' parents are Louis Alexis Daraby in both....but either Marguerite Pichet or Marie Marguerite Richer-Lou??? (hard to read in my photocopy here but can get it again from the original) ... And for the wife Marie Josephte Brunet's parents it has Charles in both, but her mother is listed as Marie Blain in the church record and the original entry for the Drouin book, but edited to Marie-Raphaelle Lauzon.... Any clarification would be much appreciated. Thanks.

here's a curious question is Kanesatake L'Annociate Parion in OKA, what history books I have read state Kanesatake was near OKA not part of. So do OKA records include Kanesatake?

I ask this cause between 1676 up to 1830 families were encourage to leave Trois Rivieres and settle around Pointe du Lac. The largest movement was noted around 1830, 14 family, numbering about 50 moved to Kanesatake. SO I have been digging in those areas not thinking it was part of OKA records.

also again I ask Marguerite native name on document was WiniKaawikwe can you be positive that is her. As you have her down as Marguerite Nipawikwe-Ounipaouikon? Even found as Marie Marguerite Pinesliikwe?..frustrating but funny at times.

Also I have recently stumbled upon by blind luck...ordering the wrong file, found records that fit as well for Jean Baptiste Kikons 59, Anastsie Kikonsikwe 56, Simon Nabanowechkam 30, Marguerite Kijiitinokwe 21
from 1852 Duex Montagnes (county) 521 Mission du Lac Annunciateion.

now would this be the other Simon Naabanowechkam who married Aug 21 1849 to Marie Anne Angligue Kijabanokwe

Bonjour Claire-Maude,

If you are still interested, I have more info here concerning Francois-Xavier Dumouchel and his family.

Francois-Xavier Dumouchel was born on 18 Dec 1803 in St-Benoit. He first married Sophie Brisebois in St-Benoit on 7 February 1825. Sophie Brisebois was born in Pierrefonds on 28 April 1805 and died on 25 August 1846. He then married a second time to Esther Morin-Laforet, widow of Paul Charbonneau, on 25 October 1847. He moved to Ontario between 1861 and 1871, since the first census to list him in Prescott is the latter one. He dies in Prescott on 25 June 1878. In the 1881 census, his widow, Esther, is still living in Prescott with the kids.

I don't have info about the Dumouchel children since I was mostly researching on Esther's previous marriage, but I hope this helps. All corresponding records can be found on my public tree "Gagnnon family tree".

Hope this helps,

Andrée
Her grandfather is Joseph Buckwheat and given the info you've provided, the same one you're inquiring about. If you know her that's great as it sounds like she's an aunt of yours...I'm trying to find out more info for her and might have some that could be useful to you. If you could email me at courtney.popenberg@yahoo.com that would be great! Thanks.

I haven't been into here since about 2004 or 2005. I was in the process of moving to another state and in the move I lost all information on my computer. I have gradually been piecing it back together again. A lot of it was no problem to replace but I didn't have any of the information from Canada saved. If there is anyone out there that is connected with my family, please respond. My line is as follows: Joseph Masse Gravel dit Brindlier married to Marguerite Tavernier, their son Pierre Gravel married to Madeliene Cloutier, their son Lt. Augustin Gravel married to Elizabeth Caron, their son Pierre Gravel married to Louise Genevieve Langelier, their son Francois Marie Gravel married to Louise Cecile Monette, their son Pierre Francois Gravel married to Catherine Rastoul, their son Cyrille Gravel married to Angelina Neveu, (all in Canada) their son Cyril Adelard Gravell married to Alice Larine Swaner 1895 in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA (My grandparents).

Re: Lascelle, Lacelle married to autochtone woman
Hello,
I spent some time yesterday researching your question concerning Joseph Lacelle, son of Benjamin Lacelle and Olive Demers. I was not able to find his marriage, but in the process of researching, I found quite a few other items that, if you have not already found them, might be of interest to you.

Benjamin Lacelle, son of Antoine Lacelle and Adelaide Lebrun, married Olive Demers on 31 Jul 1865 at St-Benoit. This was her second marriage - she was previously married to David Lacelle. David Lacelle, son of Luc Lacelle and Louise Locbrune married Olive Demers, daughter of Isidore Demers and Esther Prezeau on 19 May 1851, at St. Benoit.

I find this family on the 1881 Census in the Wentworth-Montcalm district of Argenteuil: Benjamin Lacell, age 46
Olive Lacell, 46
Perpetué, age 15
Melina, age 12
Selena, age 9 (Marie Célina, born 24 Dec 1871, St-Benoit.)
Joseph, age 5
"Olglantine", age 3

Perpetué Lacelle (daughter of Benjamin Lacelle and Olive Demers) married Léon Auger on 19 May 1884 at Basilique Notre-Dame, Montéal. Léon was the son of Léon Auger and Marie Paquet.

Emelina Lacelle (daughter of Benjamin Lacelle and Olive Demers) married Pierre-Zotique Tassé, son of Theodore Tassé and Mathilde Rochon, on 25 Jul 1887 at Notre-Dame-des-Nations, Montfort, Argenteuil.

Eglantine Lacelle (daughter of Benjamin Lacelle and Olive Demers) married Martial Lauzon (son of Joseph Lauzon and Adelaide Laroche) on 27 Aug 1900 at St-Philippe-d'Argenteuil. Eglantine is listed as the daughter of Benjamin Lacelle and the late Olive Demers of St-Michel parish.

In 1901, Joseph Lacelle is still living with his father Benjamin in Wentworth, Argenteuil. Benjamin is listed as born in Jun 1835 and Joseph on 19 Aug 1876. As you know, of course, Joseph was really born 11 Aug 1875 and baptized on 12 Aug 1875 at St-Benoit.

If Joseph Lacelle happened to have been married at St-Michel-de-Wentworth, that marriage won't be listed on Ancestry because the listing of vital records for St-Michel-de-Wentworth skips from the year 1892 to the year 1913.

Do you know whether Joseph Lacelle and his wife moved to Ontario, as did Cyrille Patrie and his wife Celina Lacelle? Do you know when/where Joseph Lacelle died?

I can research a bit more if you can provide any other clues.

Margaret

You have gotten my attention and I am egar to find the missing link to this puzzle.

""BUT"" I figured that you were from Deux Montanges (Two Mountains) area. I have checked the Quebec Marriage name index which I have at home and did not see any marriages of a Thomas or Lloyd. I did see a Thomas Strasbourg who married Aug 21 1954 in the Rouyn area of Quebec. I have a Thomas Francis Lallemand buried at Cote des Neiges Cemetery Montreal section 01063 on Aug 26 1912.

1) Is or was your familly from the province of Quebec or Ontario. Were your parents and grandparents married in Quebec?
2) Seeing that your grandfather is still living can you get his parents (your Ggt Grandperants)names and which area were they married, died or were born?
Again if you want this information only between us you can use my e-mail davider89@yahoo.com
Egar to explore this family connection.
Thanks Davide

Alexis:
My french written is terrible but I can read and speak very well in french, my mother tongue is english.
My great great grandmother is Mary Louise Strasbourg from Lochiel Ont near Alexandria. But her roots are the Strasbourg from Pierrefonds QUE. 99% of the Strasbourg are related and 70% of the Lallemands are of the same tree (L'Allmand) means "the German" and a lot of Strasbourg were changed to Lallmand, Lallement etc.
I have been working for 12 years now putting all the Strasbourg/Lallmand of Eastern Ontario and Quebec together and have (estimate) a 1,000 or more with marriage certificates, Church registers obituaries etc.
If you want I can may be help you as I do this because I enjoy doing this and ""not"" for a fee (yes for free) so as others may enjoy the familly tree.
All you have to do is let me kown and if I get your fathers and granfathers I could see where you are in the familly tree.
Davide

Hi, looking for info about Joseph Lascelle/Lacelle born 1860(son of Benjamin Lascelle/Lacelle & Olive Demers from St-Benoit) He had 2 sisters Eglantine and Celina.(Celina Lacelle married to Cyril Patry + Wilfrid Monette)

The family lived around St-Benoit, Lachute, St-Michel des Saint, Pine Hill, Lac Noir etc.

Joseph(unless he had a other firstname that I do not know) married a autochtone woman.
The only info that I have, about his wife, is from my mom , who said that her mother (Alexina patry/thibault born in Chatham) used to call her "tante Marie" and she was the wife of her mother's brother
If someone can help it would be really appreciated

Where are the parish records for Oka prior to 1786? Ancestry has them from 1786 up. I would need to access the records prior to 1786. Were those registers not microfilmed by Drouin? And if they were, under what parish would they be? Thanks
