I suspect it was in the village of St-Anicet, but was it in front of the old school?
I recognize a couple of people, i.e., Simone Chrétien, her brother Guy, and her father Omer. Not sure about a couple more. Did not recognize any of your family in there, like you grandfather Laurent, etc.
Simone Chrétien was one of my teachers in school, so was Yvette and Lucille Carriere--are they in the pic?

Claudette Maither

Do you have an Archibald Shearer (1797-1867) married to Agnes Blackstock? Archibald and about a half dozen of his siblings immigrated from Lanark, Scotland to Peterborough County, Ontario, Canada about 1820, with one brother, James, going to Kansas. They were a very prolific family. If so, I'd be very interested in hearing from you. I have quite a bit of information on the family too.

William Gibson b. abt. 1795 in County Derry, IRE, m. Hulda Brayton (b. 1804 Hinchenbrook). Does anyone have info on William's natal family members in Huntingdon?

Also: Paletiah Brown and Margaret Gibson married at Caldwell Manor, 16 Feb 1812. No idea whether Margaret is related to William, but another possible lead.

My 2nd great grandfather's name is Richard Gibson Brown. After 20+ years we're still trying to find his ancestry. 1)There is a long history of connections between the Brown and Brayton families.
2)Richard's middle name could be his mother's maiden name.

So I'm hoping to find a connection here in Huntingdon.

Thanks!
Beth

Dave - thanks so much! I thought it might read Scotland since there are Scottish thistles depicted near the top of the stone. There is conflicting information on the census's I have found. Some list Scotland, some list Ireland as the land of birth....knowing what the headstone reads makes it much more likely that Scotland is their homeland. Time to delve into the Scottish records. :D
Karen

Glad to help, and I sympathize. I have an identical situation with another headstone in that cemetery. Going to the cemetery didn't help -- "my" inscription is weathered past the point of legibility.

Thanks for the kind research offer. I think I have a pretty good handle on the family -- I was just curious if we possibly shared a family connection.
smithd214 and jl350 - thank you for your responses.

Both links have been very helpful. Having found the gravestone I was looking for, I find I can't read the entire inscription on one of the stones! It's the stone for William Moore and Elizabeth(Boyd) Moore.

I believe the last sentence reads "Natives of ......", but the last word is unreadable. I'd love to know if the last word is, perhaps, Scotland or Ireland? Wondering what you think it might read. I've hit a brickwall with William and knowing what that word reads might open a new lead to pursue. Anyway, thanks for your help.

jl350 - I don't have any Shearer connections, but I do live close to Edmonton, if there is any research I can do for you there, just let me know. :D

Harvey, McKenzie & Cameron>St. Anicet, Huntingdon

I am researching the family of Roderick McKenzie and Lilly Cameron of Ormstown, Godmanchester and St. Anicet (on record between 1845-1861). Several HARVEY family members played a prominent role in the lives of the McKenzie children and I am exploring if they might have been related.

As such, I have reviewed the following records and placed them in chronological order:

In 1849, Donald Cameron MCKENZIE, son of Roderick MCKENZIE and Lily CAMERON, was baptized in Dundee. One DAVID HARVEY was a witness.

In 1850, Alexander MCKENZIE, another son of Roderick McKenzie and Lily CAMERON was baptized in Dundee and a DAVID HARVEY was a witness.

The David Harvey of these first two records, I believe, was married to Catherine CLARK, daughter of Samuel CLARK & Jane MILLAR.

In the 1851 Agricultural Schedule for St. Anicet, Roderick MCKENZIE and Lily CAMERON were enumerated 2 households away from a JOHN HARVEY (b. 1781) and 9 households away from a DAVID HARVEY (All living on Range 2, Part 1). In the regular census for 1851, Roderick McKenzie is listed as Robert McIntire, but this was an error by the census taker. It is actually Roderick McKenzie and family. (I can not read a surname for John Harvey's wife, but The Gleaner Extracts of 1875 lists a JANET ORR, wife of John Harvey, who died that year at La Guerre).

By 1861, Lilly and Roderick are not to be found in St. Anicet. Lilly Cameron is presumed dead. Her husband, Roderick McKenzie, was either deceased or perhaps had to work and therefore farmed the children out to relatives or neighboring families.

In that census year, two of the McKenzie children, Catherine and John, were found living with the family of ROBERT HARVEY & wife, ISABELLA MCDONALD. Robert may be the son of JOHN HARVEY & Janet, who were listed next door.

In the same year, a third child of Roderick McKenzie and Lily Cameron, DONALD/DANIEL "Dan" MCKENZIE, was living with ALEXANDER MCDONALD and his wife, AGNES HARVEY. (MY LINE).

These three McKenzie children appeared to be living in 1861 with various members of the John Harvey and Janet Orr family, presuming that I have identified David, Agnes and Robert Harvey correctly as children of this family.

Also, I do not recall the date, but Roderick McKenzie additionally witnessed the baptism of at least one Harvey child.

Some of the family members must have kept in touch. I found a newspaper article from Antwerp, Jefferson Co., NY stating that ANDREW WALLACE HARVEY, a son of ROBERT HARVEY and ISABELLA MCDONALD, had attended the wedding of Catherine McKenzie's daughter, Kate, in New York. This was in the year 1908. (Catherine McKenzie, one of the children of Roderick McKenzie and Lilly Cameron, went to New York to seek work between the 1861 and the 1871 censuses. In 1879, she married Jonathan Render, a well-to-do dairy farmer of Jefferson County. Isabella McDonald, who had essentially been Catherine McKenzie's adopted mother, died in 1876, when Andrew Wallace Harvey was just 11 years old. Catherine and Wallace probably lived together for a number of years when he was a child. Wallace came to New York in 1885, primarily living in Antwerp, Jefferson County, until his death in 1931 (except the 1920 census shows him with wife and son in Lewis Co., NY). Did Wallace come to Antwerp because of his connection to Catherine McKenzie Render? In the 1910 census, he was listed as working on a dairy farm.

Interestingly, Robert Harvey and Isabella McDonald named their last child LILY AGNES HARVEY (keeping in mind that the McKenzie children's mother was Lily Cameron...this is not an extremely common name in the records).

I would love to know if anyone has seen the McKenzie name come up in or near Harvey records or if their could be intermarriages between the two families.

One question I have is the significance of the witnesses on baptismal records. When someone served as a witness, did it typically mean they were related to the family or could they just be a random neighbor who was kind enough to sign their name? I am wondering if the witnesses were essentially God parents?

I appreciate any info.

Yes, ggdncr2, it sounds very much as if you and I have followed through along the same genealogical trails. The Margaret Walsh/ County Meath connection (from that obit) was one I'd pondered on too. Even married in Canada, one could imagine that John and Margaret would have originated from the same place in Ireland. But I've been stymied at every turn when I tried to find them (Mother-Liz, James, Daniel, John and Thomas) back in Ireland, or on a ship crossing over.

County Cork baptism sounds very interesting and I'll have to look into the lead you've given here. I'd kind of dead-ended a few years ago when I went the Meath (and the Kerry/ Derry) route.

Would you date their year of emmigration from Ireland as 1832-33? The earliest 'definite' record I have is Daniel (John's bro) marrying Rose Kiernan sept 1835 (Canada), and their first son James (1837) the first Canadian-born of that family group.

It seems to be the same info as I have, Mary Cobb though was actually Margaret Cobb and I don't know if it is an error or not, but I have a picture of one of the Bannon stones and Bridget's last name was spelt Shevlen. The more I dig into the Bannon history, I am starting to think that the Bannons in Rawdon and the Bannons here were 2 different families! Things just don't add up time wise and age wise. I thought that maybe James had met Bridget when he visited relatives in Rawdon but then Bill told me the other day that Bridget was actually hired by the church to be Father Woods' housekeeper and that was how she had met James Bannon. So I will have to keep digging some more!

Again, thanks for additional info. Re: the book-at the end of the last chapt the author lists the landholders/residents of Godmanchester. James and John Donohoe side by side. Re Meath Ms Mcbride thinks the Donohues came from there. John's wife Margaret Walsh's obit says she emigrated from there, but I've not found her there but a matching baptism in Co Cork. Yes, have the 1842 census, again John and James together.

She married James Bannon, son of John Bannon and Mary Cobb on Oct 16, 1888 in St Joseph's, Huntingdon Qc. James was born there.

Felix Woods (priest) was transferred to St Joseph Parish in 1869 where he served until his death Nov. 26, 1887 (55 yrs). He was buried in the church on the Gospel side. A commemorative plaque on the alter honors his service. He was the first priest born in Rawdon.

Margaret Woods died April 9,1904 in Huntingdon.

Could you verify any of this please?

Thank you

With the 1861 census, James appears on sheet 208/image 35; John, and mother Elizabeth on sheet 209/ image 37; Daniel on sheet 210/image 39; and Thomas on sheet 213/image 45. I'd found these by accident, hunting through the pdf's a few years ago. I'd written it down on a paper and I hope it still is current info.

County Meath? I have no direct confirmation of their original home in Ireland. I have seen the County Meath (Merth, one place) reference but have never been able to confirm it definitively nor independently.

I have gone through the book you mention (Robert Sellar?) I'd found it on google-books last year. My memory of it isn't very clear but I recall a single reference to a Donahue (O' ghue?...)who probably would have been one of those original brothers.

Oh, and you may want to search the "1842 Census for Godmanchester Township" for the name 'John Dunachoe'. Almost certainly it refers to your John 1812-1866, married to Margaret Walsh Sept 9, 1839. By 1842 their first chidren: James (June 11, 1840) and possibly Margret (spelling in the old bible, April 25,1842) had been born. Your Thomas shows in that bible as having been born Feb 18, 1855.

Hi,
I have been researching the Bannon line off and on for a few years now, it is difficult and there are gaps here and there. The worst problem is the fact that they keep using the same names over and over in every generation. I found the papers where they put in for a land grant, it is dated 1821 and there was Patrick 33 yrs. old, married with 1 son and 2 dau. then Thomas,29, married with 1 dau., then James,34, married with 1 son and 1 dau., then Edward,27, married with 1 son and finally John,26, married with 1 son. Whether or not they all got land, I don't know, but it is about that time that Patrick, James and John seemed to have come here for land. Maybe the others stayed in Rawdon or went elsewhere,Ontario or the USA, I don't know. Bill Bannon's grandparents are James Bannon and Bridget Shevlin, but he has no idea who James' parents were. He had a picture of James and Bridget and he also has an older picture of a Michael Bannon and Johanna McCarthy, age and time wise, they could be the parents of James, but I have no proof of anything. The Huntingdon website has great records for the protestant births, etc. but there is not much for the Catholic records and the Bannons were Catholic. James was born in/or about 1851 and he died in 1928. Michael was born in 1822 and died in 1883. I am sure that Michael is a son of one of the five Bannon boys that were mentioned on the land grant, but which one I don't know. Bill's father was named James Edward Bannon, but the Edward mentioned on the land grant never seemed to have come here. Bill knew she was from Rawdon and he also remembers hearing about her mother and the Rev. Woods. So it is possible that James was visiting Uncles and Aunts in Rawdon and he met Bridget. Are there any Bannons in Rawdon now??
Mary Lou

ggdncr2,

Your John, born 1812 is definitely brother to my (and ParticiaMc's husband's) Thomas 1818 gggf. The 1861 Canadian Census is especially illustrative in showing the parallel families of the four brothers, James, John, Daniel and Thomas. Original-John's Thomas, your g grandfather, does show having been born to John and Margaret in 1855. I've been able to cross-reference some of the information with an old family bible dating from the days of Original-Thomas. In it is recorded that "John (spelled) Danohoe died Oct 26, 1866 age 54 years" Also is recorded the death of their mother, Elisabeth (sic) (Cain) "died Aug 28 age 90 1866".

The duplication of given names, even within the one generation down from the original four brothers... Not to mention the unbelievable variations of surname spelling (or census takers' penmanship)is extremely confounding.

Thos Donahoe 1818-1896/ Mary Caveney 1823-1892 are my gg-grandparents (Elizabeth Cain 1775-1866; my ggg-grandmother). Matriarch-Elizabeth and four sons; James, Daniel, John and Thomas, and daughter Mary (Kelly) begin appearing in 'Lower-Canada' records circa 1832-3. From the 1852 census onwards, the record is fairly well documented (listed in 1881 census as 'Dunahoe'). Prior to ~1833, I have no knowledge re: ship lists or residency in Ireland. James Sr? (husband to Liz Cain); I have no definite record of this ancestor. Her son, James, is frequently confused as the 'husband'.

I guess your Peter 1859-? and Tom Jr 1855-1923(Idaho)would be my gg-uncles... Their youngest brother, Joseph 1861-1903, buried Frenchtown, Montana, is my great-grandfather. My late father and I located the cemetery and marble marker in 1987. We were planning a subsequent motor trip to Huntingdon, Quebec to scout out church records/cemeteries but never followed through. My father just missed the computer internet age, and I can only imagine how thrilled he would have been to partake in online genealogy.

My Donahue connection is John, born 1812 in Ire. Married Margaret (Walsh). B1818 D1896 John died 1866, both buried in St Joseph. Their son Thomas, my g grandfather b 1855 moved to Nevada along with at least 2 sisters.Thomas married Mary Kelly in Nev. I suspect bros James and John emigrated earlier. I think John's older bros is James as they are listed side by side in several census, and Elizabeth their mother I assumed-the others of that generation I did not know about. Thomas stayed in Nevada and Calif don't know about the other boys James, John and Daniel. Much duplication in names between John and James sons-both had large families

Thanks so much, Claire. We do have those 3 birth/baptism records, and have copied many more as-yet-unconnected Armstrongs from Quebec church records in the Drouin Collection. You never know when you may find another family that's related. Every bit of information is helpful!

We haven't yet found a mid-1850s birth/baptism record on David J. Armstrong & Mary Ann Waggoner's son Wallace. Wallace was age 16, born Canada, in the 1870 Franklin Co., New York census. In the 1900 census of Ramsey Co., Minnesota, he said he was born Oct. 1854 in Canada.

There were probably other children born between the last known child, Wallace, in 1854 (when mother Mary Ann was about 30), and David J. Armstrong's death in 1866. At least there were probably other pregnancies. These children must have died young or at birth (if carried to term) since they weren't with mother Mary Ann in the 1870 Franklin Co., NY census. We don't have any records of these possible other children, and may never know.

If you see anything else about Armstrongs in this area, I'll be glad to hear about it!

Thanks again,
Annie

If you are still looking for information on Peter Elder Caldwell, here is a link to a mini-biography. He had a son named Hamilton, I believe, but the birth and death dates you have are for Peter Elder Caldwell. His brother, William George Caldwell is my great grandfather. Here is the link:

http://books.google.com/books?id=HN8DAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA401&a...
Hi Gillian,

Was very nice seeing your posts. Thomas Unwin and Annie Read/Reid's eldest daughter, Elizabeth Annie married William Howie; they are my Great Great Grandparents. I found Thomas's "END" in Kaiapoi, NZ ... so am now working back to compile some biographical information about him. Particularly his military career.

David J. Armstrong of Godmanchester m. Mary Anne Waggoner 1843, d. 1866 New York

Searching for descendants of David James ARMSTRONG (born abt 1809 Ireland - died 1866 Trout River Lines, Franklin Co., New York).

David came to old Beauharnois County, Quebec from County Tyrone, Ireland with his father, David John Armstrong, who served in the Royal Artillery and retired to Quebec with his wife Mary Ann and 6 children in 1817.

David John Armstrong, the artilleryman, became a farmer and part-time Methodist preacher in Godmanchester after his retirement from the military. His name is seen in various Quebec records as "David," "David J." and "John." He is mentioned in Sellar's 1888 history and interviews with local residents ("The History of the County of Huntingdon and of the Seigniories of Châteauguay & Beauharnois," 1888). He and his wife Mary Anne -- also a native of County Tyrone, Ireland -- were buried in the old Methodist burying ground at Ormstown.

David James ARMSTRONG, son of David the Royal Artilleryman, married Mary Anne WAGGONER in 1843 at the Methodist Church in Godmanchester. Details of their original marriage record include:

"David James Armstrong of the Township of Godmanchester, Bachelor, and Mary Ann Waggoner of the same place, Spinster, were united in the holy bonds of matrimony after the publication of banns on the seventeenth day of January in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty three in the presence of the subscribing witnesses."

We haven't yet found David James Armstrong with wife Mary Anne Waggoner and children in any census of Canada or the U.S., although their children's baptisms indicate that they were living in the Godmanchester area in the 1840s-1850s. David died in 1866, and his widow Mary Anne was living in New York in 1870 and Iowa in 1880.

Their children, according to HOLCOMBE and WAGGONER family genealogies and D.A.R. membership data, as well as Methodist Church baptismal records, were:

1. William ARMSTRONG - birth date unknown, no baptismal record found.

2. Elena ARMSTRONG - b. abt 1844 in Vermont or Canada; no baptismal record found. Married Hyard O. COUCH and in 1880 was living with him in Warren Co., Iowa. Her mother Mary A. Armstrong was living with them.

3. Harriet Mary ARMSTRONG - b. 1845 and baptised in Godmanchester, Huntingdon Co., Quebec. Married James BIRKETT of Ontario in 1867; was living with him and son Cecil (only known child) in Ottawa in 1871 census. Harriet died in 1890 in Ottawa.

4. David John ARMSTRONG - b. 1847 and baptised in Godmanchester, Huntingdon Co. Married Cecilia Webster GARRICK in 1873 in Grand Rapids, Kent Co., Michigan. Their children were born in Michigan, Illinois & Minnesota. Where are descendants today?

5. James Henry ARMSTRONG - b. 1851 & baptised in Godmanchester, Huntingdon Co.

6. Wallace ARMSTRONG - b. abt 1854 in Canada, living with widowed mother in 1870 census in Franklin Co., New York. His father was noted "of foreign birth" in this census, another indication that David James Armstrong was born in Ireland.

David James Armstrong and his wife Mary Anne Waggoner are buried in Riverside Cemetery, Westville, Franklin Co., New York, where their tombstones tell us:

David J. ARMSTRONG - Died March 10, 1866 aged 55 yrs
Mary A. - His Wife Died April 11, 1881 aged 56 yrs

If you are a descendant of this family, or have any information on David James Armstrong and his extended family, I'd be very glad to hear from you.

Annie Crenshaw
anniecrenshaw at centurytel.net

Re: Horne and Johnstone Families - NY and Canada to San Francisco 1840-1900

What I love about these message boards is that sometimes folks may respond over a decade later - lets see.

I have been looking for the names of my great grandmother's parents for over a decade. They died when she (Mable Elizabeth) and her brother (Walter) were young and no one seems to know much about them. The father's last name was Johnstone from New York, according to the censuses of my great grandmother and her mother's last name is Horne, from Canada.

Johnstone and Horne probably born in the mid 1840's, married about 1870 and ended up in San Francisco by the mid 1870's and both had died by 1900, but I do not know when nor how. I just know the brother gave away my great grandmother at her wedding in 1906 in San Francisco.

This Horne family has an interesting history in that they are related to the Stevens, Coopers, Woodthorpes.... The Woodthorpes and Coopers were actors in the mid 1800's in San Francisco and Oakland and the Stevens started in silent films (Keystone cops) and graduated into full length cinema. I know these families are related to my Hornes, probably through the Woodthorpe or Cooper sisters, but I have not been able to determine exactly how. I know nothing about my ggrandfather Johnstone.
