Evelyn,
I noticed your post about visiting Altona last year regarding these names. Did you have any luck? I call my research into the Lecuyer/Lagoy branch the Black Hole. I am always getting sucked down into hours of following a slim lead but I still haven't gotten back to their Canadian origins. The first one to show up in the US (that I'm sure of) is Harriet Benjamin Lagoy, wife/widow of Edward Lagoy, in the 1860 census. Edward is listed as the father of her children on their subsequent vital records, but does not show up in the US. He could have died before the 1860 census. His birthplace is listed as St Edward, Quebec. Harriet was born about 1830, and I would guess Edward Lagoy would have been about the same age or older. I have gone to northeastern NY for the past 3 years on research trips without finding primary proof of Edward's origin or ancestry. There was a cousin or brother, Francis/Frank (b 1823, St Edward), and two sons, Moses (b 1847) and Edwin (b 1853). Any help would be appreciated!
