1. Would like translation of attached Bail which believe to be rental agreement.
2. Renter is Hilaire Chartrand. Is Eli a nickname that would be used with the name Hilaire? When in US this individual went by Eli.
The following is what I believe the bail says but my French is not good:
This is a rental agreement between Hilaire Chartrand (agricultural person) and Aurele Maurice (restaurateur). The property in the agreement was in Montreal (2394 East St. Catherine Street and 634 Boulevard Pie IX). This was a two apartment dwelling. Being on the East is important in that that was the French side of the City of Montreal.
After the first page which tells the above information there is legal information about what can and cannot be done on the property. If they make doorways between the apartments, it must be restored to its original condition at the end of the agreement. No farm animals may be kept on the premises; any water bills paid by the owner are reimbursed by the renter with interest. Basically the owner will not lose out renting as everything has to be as before at the end of the agreement.
The amount of the agreement sounded high for the time of 1927 as there was a $1900 exchange and a monthly rate of $160.
It is signed by George (Hilaire’s brother of 5747 Papineau of Montreal) who was a “commercant” (business man who buys and sells things). Also by Ellard, Hilaire’s son
