Police Chief of North Battleford

I am looking for the records of Alexander John Johnston. He became Police Chief of North Battleford after WWII. A witness to this incident repeated the story to me a few years ago. It seems that the current mayor of the town (name unknown) asked AJ Johnston to 'look the other way' when he caught certain people doing certain things. AJ said that he would gladly do so if the mayor would put the request in writing on his letterhead. Of course the mayor wouldn't and made a few threats, which continued until AJ picked him up and literally threw him out of the police station... which at the time shared a location with the fire station. With in a few months after this incident, AJ was looking for a new job. I am curious as to how this incident was reported on AJ's police records. Before WWI he was a fingerprint pioneer with the SPP and then became a respected Police Chief in Assiniboia (as reported by his records from the Sask Archives). All of his sons chose law enforcement as career choices ..so did a grandson and now a great grand daughter. I am looking for where I can find his police service records with North Battleford. Thanks ~Marlene~

I'm looking for more information on CHARLES PERCY LEWIS (1874-?) I have information on him until 1909, and then he seems to vanish. There are some family stories describing him as a bit of black sheep and stealing money from some grain farmers, and everyone is wondering if his disappearance has something to do with that? If anyone knows anything, could you send me a wee note? Thanks!!

Family lore tells of an explosion and fire at a gas station in Loverna in which Aaron John Williams dies in 1927. Would dearly like to get details of this family tragedy. If copies of Loverna's newspaper for 1927 are not available, any suggestions of another source for details of this story?

Bernice will be lovingly remembered by her husband Jack of 56 years, her 3 children Doug (Jana), Sharon (Norm) and her youngest daughter Lori, her 6 grandchildren Tim, Sharon, Brad, Nick, Matt and Michelle and her little companion Chicklet. Bernice lived her life with passion, whether curling, golf, watching hockey, listening to a football game on the radio, or coming out and cheering on her grandkids. Mom could do it all those things at the same time! Everyone knew how much she loved her sports, but most of all she loved her "Lovey" - Jack!
I have recently discovered that my GGG-Aunt Mary-Ann Rutledge (b abt 1846, Ireland) married a James Ferris on 09 Dec 1867 in Ontario.

They had several children before Mary-Ann died in childbirth with her son, Thompson Dymus Joy Ferris, b 25 Feb 1884 - Ontario. It seem that Thompson moved to Saskatchewan and requested a record of his birth while living in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The date of the request was June 1952. I haven't been able to find any information about him - married, children.

The only other living child I have found is their son,Robert, b 30 Sep 1872, Ontario who married a Maud Y Herron and according to the 1911 census, they had 5 children while living in Battlefield, Saskatchewan.

The children were:

Ferris Liota, b. Jun 1902
Ferris Vivian, b. Dec 1903
Ferris Verna Merl, b. 06 Jan 1906,
Ferris Telford W R, b. Jan 1908
Ferris Enid, b. Dec 1910

This is a totally new branch for me, so this is all the information that I have on them.

susan
aboutmyheritage.ca/herstorie

At least two of my great grandfather's brothers were admitted into the Hospital in North Battleford and are believed to have died there.

Jacob (Jake) and Vincent Kolenosky likely died in this Hospital. The Kolenosky surname has many different variations.

Does anyone know if there is a separate cemetery for the Hospital or would they be buried in the municipal cemetery.

Thanks for the help.

Kyle Sattler
Milestone, SK

I have traced a family of George Washington Brownell b 1859 Adams, Jefferson Co, NY and his wife, Lula/Lulu Lowe b 1879 WI who migrated from Todd Co, MN to Battleford, Saskatchewan about 1908. On the 1911 census they have the following children with them:
-Lawrence R b Apr 1899 MN
-Ralph L b Oct 1893 MN
-Esther E b Sep 1894 MN
-Gerald W b Jan 1903 MN
-Ernest E b Jun 1909 Saskatchewan, Canada

I believe that George W Brownell was the son of Hiram/Hirum Brownell b 1826 NY and Evaline Thomas abt 1835 NY who migrated to Lincoln Co MN.

I have more info on the ancestors of Hirum/Hiram to share. I would like to know when and where George died. Also if there are any descendants still living in Saskatchwan?

Chris

Wondering if anyone would have any history information in regards to the Convent of l'Assomption that was in Battleford in the first half of the 1900s. My ggrandfather, Honore Boutin was a caretaker there after he retired from farming. He passed away in 1952. I am interested in any old photos that he may be in. The convent was located on 22nd Street in south Battleford. Thank you
Michael Beausoleil

I am looking for a map of the plots of the old Delmas Catholic Cemetery that was used from May 1911 to 1950. This cemetery is located on SE 7- 46-18 w3 which is one half mile north of the present day hamlet of Delmas. A lot of bodies were exhumed from this gravesite and moved to the present day graveyard.
Of interest to me is three people that were buried there.
1) William Beausoleil d. Oct 30 1945
2) Leroy Virgil Beausoleil d. May 26 1946
3) Joseph Henry Beausoleil d. May 26 1946

I have been to visit this graveyard and can find no markers. The Diocese of Prince Albert has no records of this grave yard even though the Oblates didn't turn over the care of the cemeteries until 1987 to the Hamlet. No maps are available from the hamlet or RM of Battle River.
I am also looking for copies of obituaries for these three men. Maybe someone has a family member that has a copy in an old shoebox. Thank you

Michael Beausoleil

In 1905 my great Aunty Alice Emigrated to Canada from Almeley to marry her future Husband John Lloys who had emigrated I beleive 4 years earlier. I have been over and visited many of the family and I had the pleasure of staying with Reg and Roy Lloys who were unbeleivably good to me. I was reading through the Autobiography of John Lloyd and about his Nursery and started to wonder what happened to ADANAC? does the place still exist?? Does the area Swarthmoor still exist?

Dean family from Ontario, homesteaded in Plenty, Hawarden from around 1904

Can someone do lookups for me in Saskatchewan Archives or any other place that you are aware of. I am looking for John langman Dean(or Deen), Jabez Smith Dean(or may be Smith Deen) and James Albert Dean(Deen). These men moved to Saskatchewan around 1904 or 1905 with their parents Jabez Smith Deen and Eliza. They were all there in the 1911 census. I am trying to locate descendents of John, James and Jabez junior. I have the Homestead records but I do not know where they went after 1911. I do not that they had sister Letitia who married a Howe and she is buried in Hawarden Cemetery.Another sister Mildred is probably also buried around Hawarden. The father was born in 1838 and was 73 in the 1911 census. John Langman Dean was listed in Biggar Saskatchewan on the Homestead records. I believe that Biggar is now probably part of Saskatoon. If anyone knows of Dean families that originally came from Ontario(especially the Hastings County area ) please let me know. Originally, the name was spelled Deen but often they were also listed as Dean. I am involved in a y DNA project and would like to find some male Dean members.

hello,

I am new to Sask. researching and I hope someone will be able to guide me, as to what to do next.

We have it from many sources that members of our brackenbury family immigrated to Cut knife. We don't know exactly when, but they were born 1873-1881, so we will guess early 1900,s maybe. The names I have are Richard taylor brackenbury, Hubert, and Frederic, we are told Frederic died shortly after arriving. Now the difficult part is what do I look at since I have no dates?? Are there any city directories? I know that Richard died after the 1950's since he made a trip to England. Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Please e-mail me personnaly.
Thank you very much

I am seeking information to complete a Halter Family history regarding Kasper Elder born Feb. 2, 1856 in Russia and died Nov. 17, 1933 in Revenue Sask. Kasper is said to be a half brother to my Grandfather, Engelbert Halter, as well as a half brother to Anton Halter and Joanna Tuchscherer ( Halter) of Tramping Lake. Kasper immigrated to Sask in 1906 from North Dakota along with his wife Catherine Senger and about 8 children as well as the Halter siblings, Anton and Engelbert Halter and Joanna Tuchscherer ( Halter). I am especially intertested in who Kasper's mother was and if the name of his father is known. I have a few different names of Kasper 's parents but no real proof or anything that has been confirmed. Any help would be greatly appreciated. These names have a direct relationship as information indicates Kasper's mother may also have been Engelbert's mother. Thank you!

I'm trying to find more about Carl Algot, born 24 Jan 1893 in Landa, Halland province, Sweden. He was the son of Borje August Andreasson and had the surname Borjesson before leaving for the US in 1912. There he probably changed to Borgeson, Borjeson or perhaps Beckman (which his cousins in Minnesota used).

As far as I know Carl was alive in 1952 because that's when he visited relatives in Minneapolis. According to some family sources Carl was married to Gurine and had children Ernie, Ingolf and Darrel. The latter may still be alive.

If anyone who recognizes these people please let me know!

Hello, would anyone have any info on this family?? Mike and Margaret lived in the Battleford District in the 1911 census. There was 4 children then. I would like to know where they lived before Canada?? And what happened to this family after 1911. I have a Iwan Holyk from Austria that came to Canada to farm with his brothers, but I do not know the names of his brothers or where they lived when arriving. Any help on this family would be wonderful. Thanks
Stephanie
stephonah@yahoo.ca

Finding the author of an old message

In November & December of 2002 Linda S. and myself were trying to find some grave locations in a Battleford cemetery when someone replied with this message;
"I am currently doing research regarding the St. Vital church in Battleford as part of my MA degree in archaeology and I grew up in the Battlefords'. I have an old map of the catholic section of the town cemetery (dated 1910) that the Roman Catholic Diocese of Prince Albert let me photocopy for my research. What is the name you are looking for??? I could check on the map for you and let you know."
Of course I asked if s/he could look up a name.
The "I" who had the copy of the map never replied. Does anyone know who that person is and how to get in touch with them? If you go back and look at the message you will see that the author space is blank. I've never seem a blank one before.
John

Hi. I was born in the Battleords union hospital on January 7th 1980. I am not sure if I was put up for adoption right away or not, all I know is my name was Candace Leigh when I was born. When I was adopted I was living at a foster home, I was picked up later in Febuary 1980.

I am here to ask if anyone knows of me and if someone could help me find my birth family. I want whoever reads this and might have information to know that I have no hard feelings towards my biological family. I was adopted into a very loving and caring home. But still would like to find out where I came from. PLease don't hesitae if you have any information, some is better then none.

Thnak-you

Basile Lafond Sr.

I am looking for information on Baslile Lafond Sr. His parents are Amable Lafond married to Marie Racette. Basile is one of their many children. My family tree has him married to Isabelle Durand. Other research shows him married to Elizabeth Dumont. More research fails to come up with either women's names...but I have found an Isabelle Elizabeth Dumont from around the same time area. Family gossip tells that the Dumonts moved to Battleford SK and changed their name to Durand, then later back to Dumont. I'm wondering if these two women are one in the same.
