Finding my Indian Lineage for Lavallee

Hello,my name is Eva Lavallee and I am searching for my gggrandfather and mother. My gggrandfather's name is Ignace Lavallee born 1760-1765 in La Crosse, Wisconsin USA.His wife was born around the same period of time and she was a Cree Indian. Her name was Josephte (Cree) Lavallee. They moved to St. Laurent, Manitoba, Canada around 1835. While in La Cross Wisconsin, They married in the Cultural Cree Tradition. Shortly after their arrival to St. Laurent, Manitoba, Ignace was baptized in the Roman Catholic Church in St. Francis Xavier, Manitoba. They remarried the same day or the next day. We know they had 3 children: St. Jean-Baptiste born in La Crosse, Wisconsin and I don't know if the other 2 children were born there or elsewhere. St. Jean-Baptiste Lavallee was my gggrandfather who married Louise Ducharme from the Northwest Territories. The Lavallee name has different spellings and I believe Ignace spelled his last name as follows: Lavalle or Lavale as shown on his death certificate. He was buried in St. Francis Xavier, Manitoba. If you have any information regarding Ignace Lavallee and Josephte (Cree)Lavallee, Cree Indian Woman, I would greatly appreciate a call at: 1-204-221-7956 or email: elavallee58@hotmail.com

Thank you so kindly in advance for any effort in locating information about my family.

Eva Lavallee

Kowalowka Catholic Church

The Kowalowka Catholic Church in Tiny, Sask. was initially built jointly by the Ukrainian Catholic and the Roman Catholic communities on NW Sec 20, TP 31, R 4, W2 in 1905 and used for services until it burnt in 1927. St. Mary's Roman Catholic and the Ukrainian Catholic churches located north of Tiny were its replacement.

Today, the Kowalowka Cemetery, consisting of headstones representing many of the original Ukrainian and Polish homesteaders of the area, has now become overrun with bushes and trees. I have a photo of the cemetery's signage showing the names of the people buried in the cemetery. Attachment refers.

My wife's paternal grandmother, Julia (Ternowski) was the wife of Dan Zaplitney, and her headstone is located in this cemetery.

If anyone has an old photo of the Kowalowka Catholic Church or knows where I can locate one, would you kindly post a notice or contact me.

Norm Hooper

nhooper5619@rogers.com
Would anyone happen to have a copy of the book, "Remembering times: Wadena and area dating back to 1882" Published Wadena History Book Committee, 1992 to do a look up for me and either send me a scanned image of the page(s) or take a picture with a digital camera using the macro setting on the camera or retype it if it isn't long….or there might not even be anything about them in the book.

I am hoping to find out if there is a write up about Pauline MICHALUK who was married to Alex MARYNIAK.
Pauline MICHALUK (1914-1999), was a daughter of Paul MICHALUK & Sophie KUZYK. She married Alex MARYNIAK (1910-1990) and they lived in Wadena where they are both buried in the Wadena Cemetery.

I have read in the book "The Hands of Time" and "Parkland Trails" a tiny little paragraph but very little is said about them.

I am hoping someone could look in the "Remembering Times" book of Wadena to see if there is a write up about Alex MARYNIAK and Pauline MARYNIAK and any descendants either of them might have had, especially descendants of Pauline? I also would to learn Pauline's full date of death so that I could see if I could locate an obituary for her through the Library & Archives microfilms.
London, England, in 1887 and her sister, ALICE ROBERTS b. 1889 London, England. They were sent to Canada from a London orphanage sometime around late 1890's.

ALICE married JAMES G. R. YOUNG in Feb 14 1911 @ Drummond Court, Lanark County, Ontario. He was a farmer and his parents were ADAM & MARGARET YOUNG of Drummond County.

I think James YOUNG had some connection with the town of Osler, Saskatchewan.

EMMA was one of the witnesses at the wedding and her residence is shown as Carleton Place.
Hi,

I am hoping to locate the marriage of my Great-Great Aunt, Clara Eliza Harris to Henry James Jones in Saskatchewan some time between 1910-1914.

Clara emigrated from Kent, England circa 1910/1911, and according to Henry's WWI Canadian Expeditionary Force attestation papers dated December 1914 he was married, and living in Quill Lake, Saskatchewan.

If anybody is able to locate the marriage of Clara and Henry I would be most grateful.

I am also attempting to locate the births of their children, probably in Saskatchewan sometime after 1910. I know that 3 of their children were called Verna Jones, Albert H. Jones, and Jack (John?) Jones.

I would be very grateful if anybody could help me in any way.

Thanks in advance,

Darin, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England.

Having grown up in an orphanage in Winnipeg, there was no chance of knowing any family. I am trying to put together some facts for my family tree. Sincerly, Wayne Tymchuk

Hello cousin, what a pleasant surprise. To answer your first question,my bd is October 5,1947 in Winnipeg,Manitoba.Until I can get a new printer,I can only snail mail.My mother Ethel Mae McCracken had a commonlaw relationship with a John Tymchuk in Winnipeg in the early fifties. That relationship went bad around 1954-55 and we, my sister and I were apprehended by the childrens aid of Winnipeg. To make a long story short,my sister born Dorothy Lynn Tymchuk July 5,1952 was adopted and I was not. I have more but would rather send it snail mail or by email. I have spoken briefly to Rodney and Sharon in Surrey.I have also spoken with Brenda Bysouth,John Alan McCrackens daughter and she has helped me quite a bit with family genealogy.Recently,I received a list of ggrandparents children and their bds.My email is at Yahoo.com.I carry the Tymchuk name ,but am not his bio.son.I hope to hear more from you,and say hello to aunt Irene please. If you are interested,I also have postings on the Ottawa Carleton board re: McCrackens.Thats all for now. Your cousin Wayne

Darcy Jones & William Anderson McKay from Kamsack area - 1911

Regards all

Darcy Erwin Jones had a homestead near Togo Village east of Kamsack. A young neighbour was William Anderson McKay, son of John & Annie McKay who also had a homestead close to Darcy's as on the 1911 census, Darcy Jones and the McKay Family were neighbours - Mackenzie - District 12, Townships 27, page 10

Darcy Jones and William McKay went on to marry two sisters from Hastings Co., Ontario: Ida Love and Myrtle Love. I have no idea why the girls were out West, how they met up with these 2 men, when they married or exactly where they married - not in Ontario though and the marriages were after 1911 and likely before 1920.

I believe William McKay & wife Myrtle returned to Ontario. However Darcy Jones and wife Ida May, they stayed and I believe died on their homestead. Ida May Jones supposedly died in 1932. I have no idea when Darcy died and I do not know where they are buried.

Anybody have any resources for the Kamsack area thay might give me more info on these couples and families?? Or where I might look for an Obituary for Ida Jones??

I would appreciate any help
Susan

My uncle was b. in Canora in 1916 and remembers his days growing up there in great detail. He recently went back for a visit and was shocked at how little remains of what it looked liked back then.

Does anyone out there have any old (pre -1940 or so) PHOTOS of CANORA? It would mean the world to my uncle to be able to see what it used to look like there. His father owned the livery stable across from the train station until it burned down in 1918.

I'd be happy to pay for any costs to copy and mail old photos, postcards, etc.

Thanks so much.

Jann

Looking for the proper name for Julia (referred to as Jessie by her parental family) Ternowski (1893-1918) whose parents were Anton & Annie (Hanishewski) Ternowski. She married Dan Zaplitney in 1910 in Tiny, Sask. and the 1911 Census records indicates that Dan's wife was called Nellie. They homesteaded at SE Sec 2, TP 32, R 5, 2W, 2 miles north of Tiny, Sask. Her headstone in Kowalowka Cemetery indicates her name as Julia Zaplitney, 1893 - 1918.

Ternowski background: Anton and Annie and their family immigrated from Dobrowody, Austria in May 1902 and homesteaded in NE Sec 16, TP 32, R 5, 2W (ref # 784910). Land grant records reveal that Anton's surname was shown as Tarnawski. However, the Land Owners grid map of 1913 spells Anton's surname as Tarnosky.

The 1911 Census has Anton's surname as Tarrenosky (Ternowski). All the children are included in the census, as mentioned in the book, The Hands of Time, except Julia because she married in 1910.

I have been unable to located the 1906 Census records for Anton and his family because of the unknown spelling of the surname.

Any assistance would be of great importance at this time in my research.

Norm Hooper

nhooper5619@rogers.com

Zaplitney Research

I have conducted extensive research on the Zaplitney surname (my wife's surname), covering the areas of Buchanan (formerly called Dobrodowdy), Tiny (formerly called Kowalowka) and Canora.

Research Summary:

John Zaplitney (1852 - 1930's) and his wife, Nastia (Nettie) (nee Cybulsky) (1863 - 1931) and their children, Daniel (1884 - 1967), Josie (later Mrs. Alex Kosar) and Pauline (later Mrs. Clem Kolkowski)immigrated from Dobrodowy, Austria to Canada in 1902 aboard the SS Arcadia. They were the first Zaplitney ancestors to arrive in the district and they registered and acquired their 160-acre parcel of land (Section 20, S.E. Township 30, Range 6), located several miles south of the town of Buchanan. They immediately built a two-room log and plaster home with a thatched roof and mud floor. At first, they farmed with oxen and a few years later acquired a team of horses. They went through a lot of hardship, toil and poverty and if there was any sickness, there were just the home remedies. And if they wanted their mail, they would have to walk many miles to the town of Yorkton.

Dan Zaplitney (1884 – 1967) lived with his father and mother, working the farm and eventually married Julia Ternowski (1893 – 1918) in 1910. Over the course of eight years, they had eight children, two of whom, Anna and Jan, died at infancy. Those who survived were: Michael, Francis, Pauline, John and Peter. It was during giving birth and having the flu that Julia died at the age of 27 years; her remains are located in the Kowalowka Cemetery, as are the infants. Dan acquired his Nationalization Certificate in 1905 when Saskatchewan became a Province.

Julia’s mother, Ann(ie) (Hanishewski)Ternowski (headstone is located in the Buchanan Cemetery) tended to the children until Dan remarried in 1920. With his second wife, Nellie Stephniphyn, they had the following children: Ann, Joseph, Lucy, Helen, Adeline and Bernard. Dan and Nellie are buried together in the Canora Cemetery.

After Nettie’s death in 1931, the Zaplitney family moved to Tiny, Sask on a 160-acre farm (Sec. 2, Township 32, West of 2 Meridian) where they built a small log house on a knoll for Dan and his family and another small building in the treed-area of the farm for John. John died about 1937 and is buried in the Greek Catholic Church cemetery in Tiny (near the farm).

In the 1930's, Dan’s house burnt to the ground and another log home was built closer to the road. Over the years, additions and renovations were made and the home still sits on the original location. Prior to this fire, Michael, Pauline, Frances had relocated to Ontario while John was working at various jobs in Manitoba and Ontario up until 1942. It was then that Pete was called to serve in the military during WWII and John had to return to work the farm with Dan. John rented the Moran house in Tiny (today, the current highway passes over its foundation) and he had to travel 2-3 miles to get to the farm each day.

Dan’s children all attended the Tiny one-room school, of which he was a school trustee; he was also an active member of the Ukranian Catholic Church (Kowolowka); and at one time, was the Mayor of Tiny. Dan was referred to as “Guido” (which means grandfather in Ukranian) among family.

In 1945, Dan’s son, John, married Mary Paslowski(daughter of Walter & Anne (Haskewich)Pasklowski) in St. Mary's Catholic Church (next to the farm) in Tiny. They farmed on their own, renting the Moran land and house in Tiny until 1951 when Dan decided to relocate in the town of Canora. None of the siblings wanted to return to the farm, so John reluctantly purchased the farm. John & Mary’s two children, Geraldine and Jayne, also attended the one-room school, getting there either by walking, riding in their horse drawn wagon or in a heated caboose sled in the winter. In 1972, John & Mary relocated to Canora and sold the farm to Steve and Ann Hort. John Zaplitney died in 2004 and is buried in the Canora Cemetery.

In 1988, my wife, Geri, and daughter, Kathy, visited the original homestead with John and Mary (Geri’s father, John, was born and raised here) where buildings were identified and stories told. They also visited various cemeteries and the now Hort owned farm in Tiny. Photos and movies have been preserved on CDs. In the early 1990’s, the original homestead was revisited, but to our dismay, the buildings were bulldozed and the land converted to farmland.

Norman Hooper

6600 Windsong Ave
Orleans, Ontario
K1C 6N1

tel.
My father, George Buchan, came out to his uncle's farm near Kamsack in the 1920's on a train from Halifax, known as the Harvesters' Excursion (maybe this was the type of ticket he bought). His uncle was Frances Finnie and his aunt was Margaret Grant Finnie. They were from Inverkeithny in North East Scotland.

Any information about their descendants or the farm would be appreciated.

Swedish brothers in Quill Lake

In 1913 two young Swedish brothers, Nils Erik (born 1889) and Olof Edvin Olson (born 1891) came to Minnesota. I know Olof got married to Valborg, whose maiden name I believe is Grim.

In 1921 Nils’ and Olof’s mother Karin Sundin (born 1864), her second husband Anders Sundin (born 1861), their brothers Mikael Albin (born 1897) and Jöns Alfred Olson (born 1899) and sister Karin (born 1901) left Sweden in order to join Olof.

Until recently I had no trace at all of the family after 1922. Then I found Karin’s son in California. But all he remembers about his uncles is that he visited them in Quill Lake as a child.

No I hope some reader of this query have information on the family. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Maud
Obit - MOROZOFF, Allan

MOROZOFF _ Allan Allan Morozoff, beloved husband of Shirley, passed away September 6, 2007 at the age of 59 years. Allan was born in Kamsack, Saskatchewan and brought up on a farm near Verigin. After High School he went to technical school in Moose Jaw where he got his certificate in soil testing. From there he journeyed to Calgary to begin his life as a businessman, a family man and an adventurer. He started his business ventures in a partnership called Almor Testing Services, but one company was not enough for him. About ten years later he initiated another company called Geo Grout, both of which are continually successful today. Allan loved life and put himself into it. His great passions for scuba diving, fishing, photography and finally flying took him on many adventures in all walks of life. Over the last several years he sought serenity by taking frequent trips in his airplane into the remote fishing areas of Northern Canada. Thus he fulfilled his dream of the perfect life but there he met his death. He began his life-long love affair with his wife Shirley in 1974. Shirley was a package deal. She was a widow with three pre-teen children at the time, Lawrence, Lisa and Shane. Soon he had two more children with Shirley, Jason and Matthew. Even as a young man he was unafraid of the great responsibility. He passed on many things to his children, values such as daring to dream, pursuing your passions, and living life intensely and honestly. He had many friends, was a generous man and will be deeply and profoundly missed. Funeral Services will be held in the Chapel of MOUNTAIN VIEW FUNERAL HOME on Saturday, September 15, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. Graveside Service for family only, lunch for all others followed by a "Wake". Details to be announced at Service. Arrangements entrusted to MOUNTAIN VIEW FUNERAL HOME and CEMETERY, 17 Avenue S.E. at Garden Road (1.5 km east of 84 Street S.E.). Telephone: 403-272-5555

It seems like I,m getting nowhere with genealogy. I don,t know my grandparents first names. Nobody in Kamsack seems to be left to help. Maybe it was meant to be, anyway I think I will give up trying to find my McCrackens in Kamsack. Too many emotions playing havoc.

Sorry for being a pest, but does anyone know where George was born or for that matter where Eliza was born? I got some information sent to me , but it says he was born in 1880 in Raphos county Iceland . Could be Ireland but it,s always the county first so thats out. Every time I punch in Raphos county , it suggests Phaphos county in Cyprus. In the 1911 census it says he was born in 1884 . Talk about confusing! Thank you for your patience, Wayne Tymchuk

Looking for anyone related to Gillilands of Carievale. I understand that Carievale is a very small community and my husband's grandfather Joseph Alexander Gilliland moved to Carievale from Sarnia, Ontario and then from Carievale he moved to Victoria, British Columbia where he met and married Lena Dell Sexsmith in 1920. Joseph had a sister Minnie Mary that married Thomas Butler and I believe they had 7 sons. Minnie and Thomas lived in Togo and Kamsack. Anyone with information on any of these families please contact me.
I'm trying to get info on Paul and his brother Tom. I can't find them coming into Canada or where they came from or lived prior to meeting Mary in early 1900's. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Or, if anyone has ideas of where else I should look. I've tried census, immigration, etc. The name could be spelled another way, because I heard it was changed to Sawchuk from a pronuncation that sounds like Sowkiw, but some documents have Sowchuk with an 'o'.
Thank you in advance

I continue to search for and fill in the branches of my BOWES family that seems to have spread out all across the country! I am wondering if anyone is connected to or knows anything about the family of John BOWES, b. abt 1849, St. Vincent (Meaford), Ontario (one of 12 children of James Bowes and Elizabeth Elliot of Wicklow, Ireland). John married Hannah BARR in 1875 and though I believe they might have ended up in Manitoba, he was apparently one of the early commissioners appointed re the Doukhobors in Kamsack.
One son, Frank BOWES apparently settled in Kamsack, married Eva and had two sons, Ivan BOWES and Gordon BOWES.
I would love to hear about and would be pleased to share and compare any information that I have.
Fingers crossed!
Shelley (Bowes) Hilton

My father William Lewis, grandfather John Lewis and aunt Rosie Lewis emigrated to Canada in 1929 to obtain land as part of the Land Settlement. They returned to Wales in 1935 as things did not work for them and their last known address in Canada was Copeau, Sask.
We know from immigration records that their original destination was Regina, but apart from the above information and quite a few photographs, we know little else about their 6 years in Canada.
We hope to visit the area next year to see the places where they lived and would be very grateful for any information that will help us to trace their movements in Saskatchewan.

John & Val Lewis

One statement has him dead in 1919; the other in 1934. Both are possible as he and his wife, Caroline, moved to Kelvington in 1914 (I believe). She returned to Hatton, North Dakota following his death. She died in 1937.
ANY assistance / information is greatly appreciated. Thank you and have a nice day!

I have been searching for my Robert MILNE born 26 Feb 1878 Torphins, Kincardine O'Neil, ABD, Scotland for many years.

I know he migrated to Canada in the early 1900s but I am having a lot of trouble finding him. Family scuttlebug has it that he and his brother George went over there after the 1901 UK census, evidently George went back home to Scotland and later married there in 1906 but Robert remained in Canada.

I have found a Robert MILNE living in Kamsack Village (he was a boarder at the time and aged 33) - a Blacksmith by trade and unmarried....but is he the right one???? All that the census says is that he was from Scotland, not any particular part of Scotland. It also says that he arrived over there in 1908 which doesn't fit in with the family stories but I can't rule it out.

I was wondering if there is anyone from Kamsack that uses this list, that is really *into* genealogy and could give me advice as to how I can find out more about this Robert Milne to and either prove or disprove that he is mine?

I need all the help I can get.

Byeeeee,
From Sunny Queensland, Australia

I recently attended Togo Sask and met some of my fathers friends that he attended grade school with back in the 30's and possibly the early 1940's. My father was George Bonazew and his parents were John and Dora Bonazew of Togo Sask. John and Dora had several children, Mary, Francis, Ann, Peter, Ted, Bill and my father (George). I would like to find out more from anyone that may have lived in Togo and knew the Bonazews. While in Togo I recieved some great information from many locals including Walter Fedoruk. Thanks. Please email me if you can provide any info as far as John and Doras homstead location in the Togo area. Irene Landry, if you see this please email me I lost your email address. Thanks

Kevin Bonazew

kbonazew@shaw.ca

Quill Lake 1919 - 1922

Hi,
My grandfather emigrated to Canada, Quill Lake in 1918 / 19. His name was Thomas Reveley Bonsall. He worked on a farm in the area. It's possible that he met a Canadian soldier during the First World War and travelled with him. He came back to England in 1922 to marry. Does anyone remember having an Englishman working on their farm?! The only names mentioned in his photo album are K. Derbyshire, Toronto, and J. Andress.
Many thanks for reading,
Grahame Bonsall, York, England

Axel Gustafson, Norquay

My great grandfather's brother moved his family from Chicago to Norquay, Saskatchewan in 1912. He was born in Sweden in 1869 as Axel Linus Gustavsson. He had 3 children, Ezra, Mildred, and Eleanor. Ezra took over the family farm when Axel passed on. I am interested in any information on this family, and would like to contact any descendants.
