My Grandfather died in the Somme, possibly in the advance against Courcelette and Regina Trench. He met my Grandmother in Shorncliffe in Kent, while training there. she found out she was pregnant just before he left for the front and he promised to marry her when he returned. whilst away he wrote to his family and told them of the baby and his intention to marry, but never returned. After the war his family contacted my Grandmother and asked her to go to Canada to live but she wouldn't leave her extended family. She refused to tell my mother the name of her father and swore all her sisters to secrecy. We feel she was scared of losing my mother to her Canadian family. Sadly this secret was kept until everyone who could have told us had died. My only hope is to find a family in Canada who has a similar story, of a relative who had a child in England but died in battle. My Mother was born 15th May 1917 and my Grandmothers name was Annie Relf
