Looking for information on my maternal grandparent, Filip Oleksyn and Anna Mraczkowski Oleksyn who emmigrated from Vorchynia, Galicia (sp ?) Ukraine about 1900-1907. They settled in Ituna and Sturgis, Sask. I know that they had two sons when they came to Canada. My mother, Katherine, was born in Sturgis in about 1913. I would imagine they were part of a Ukrainian community and Catholic Ukrainian parish in Ituna. Any help or look-ups would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ann Wammer email: wammer@transport.com

Eva Annie Wellum Skelton

Eva Annie Wellum Skelton was born in Maidenhead Berkshire 6 May 1908. She married an Edwin Williamson in the 2nd qtr of 1928, he was in the Guards an Equerry to King George VI. The marriage broke up and she met a Frank W Tweddell and emigrated to Canada. We think this was 1948 or possibly later. She may have taken her nephew and niece at this time or they may have joined her later. Marion Skelton was born Brentford 12 Oct 1937, Roger Skelton Croydon 15 Jun 1940.

Eva and Frank are connected in some way with Rouleau Parry High School Sask Canada in 1971. They are at Fort Qu'Appelle Sask Canada between 1975 and 1983. Eva passed away 13 Jan 1997 from cancer.

Marion and Roger possible took on the adopted surname Williamson and then later Tweddell. Marion was resident in Kelliher Sask Canada and married a Fred Tillotson. She died 14 Jul 1999 from cancer. Roger may have been connected with the military, HMCS Stadacona CFB Halifax Canada. He may later have gone abroad.

It's not much to go on but maybe someone out there may be able to offer some advice or help. Anything no matter how small will be of great help.

Forgot to mention Eva's mum who traveled with her to Canada.

Eva Jane Skelton (Holland) a widow born Reading, Berkshire, England 22 May 1882. Died Sark Canada 16 Oct 1965.

In hope

Stephen

Can someone tell me if the Tataryn Store in Wroxton, SK was previously known as the B. Singer General Store. Also did this same store go by the name of the Kramer & Soppe Hardware Store in around 1912? The Tataryn Store has been vacant for some time and is located at the north end of Main Street across from the railway tracks. Thank you.

He was born 18 Feb 1886 in Stugun, Jamtland , Sweden. He emigrated to Canada on the 13th September 1904 from Stugun thorugh Trondhiem, Norway. He sailed to Ellis Island on the SS Campania from Liverpool and went to Minnedosa, Manitoba. He spent a few years in the Winnipeg area.

I would love to find any other information about him. I have been told by family members that he did visit Kelliher (where Emma lived with her husband, Alrick). It is believed that he moved to the North West Territories, where he married a Native woman and raised a family. I have no documentation of these latter events.

I do not know where to search for such information.

Thanx

Stuart Anderson

The ASH family in Percival/Whitewood area c.1916

My mom was born in Percival in 1919 to Edmund James ASH [Ed] and Alice Ann nee MAY formerly of Kentucky U.S.A. They moved to that area c.1916. They arrived with 6 boys from Alberta then had 3 more children, 1 boy, 2 girls, one was my mom. I visited the area last September and found that my grandfather, under the name E.J. ASH has in reserve 4 plots in the Whitewood cemetery. I was wondering if anyone or their family from there would have heard of them? I checked the local history book, there is a page with a picture but the info is very scarce and Ed's name is listed as John, who was a cousin, and some of the children's name were wrong. Perhaps a neighbor filled in the info after they moved to Winnipeg around 1927-30.

The area is sub-district 17, district 198, Assiniboia East, p 8.

I also found that a Richard Mick had applied for a Western Land Grant for the South West part of 20-16-2, W2.

Richard's older brother, Isaac, my great-grandfather, lived nearly on the NE part of 6-16-2, W2.
Do anyone know if there are many cemeteries around Whitewood? Is there a list of those buried? searchable?

I have just discovered that my grandmother's brother lived in WHitewood. I have no idea what year he came to canada. His name could possibly be Ilko Paruk/Paziuk/Parok/Pazjuk. My grandmother was Sophia/Soffi living in Manitoba. They also had a half sister Telka/Tillie who lived with the brother. Tillie was married to a Bill Hnaut. I think after he passed she remarried & moved to Alberta.
Any info on them would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you

Berthe Eleonore Josephine DUBUC (d/o Joseph DUBUC & Marie Anne HENAULT) on 9 Jan 1902 St-Boniface, Manitoba.
They must have had at least 2 children:
1) Francois Camille Augustin COUPAL b. 19 Oct 1902 Lebret, Sask
And possibly a girl born about Aug-Sep 1904 in Lebret, Sask.

Their mother died in Sep 1904 Lebret, SK

Some suggestions could be that both children were adopted by a childless couple, but not sure.

From Nicole

I am seeking further information about the ancestors and birthplace information of Henry/Harry DeVOCHT (or de VOCHT). Henry married Joanna Verstrepen (d. 1941 in Indian Head, Saskatchewan, Canada). They had at least nine children: Dena, Emile, Josephine, Leopold (aka "Polo"), Peter, Victoria, Harry, Frank Joseph, and Albert.

The homestead application I have for Henry/Harry's Indian Head, Saskatchewan home lists only "Belgium" as birthplace. Some compiled histories list it as Schilde, Antwerpen, Belgium--but I do not have any documents to prove that.

If you have more information about the ancestors or birthplace of Henry/Harry, or if are descended from one of his nine children, please contact me.

I am researching the above who moved to Churchbridge as a school teacher sometime soon after 1911. In the 1911 Census he was a teacher living in North Gower Twp (near Ottawa). In Feb 1917 he enlisted in the 5th Battalion in Saskatoon and gave Churchbridge as his home, and school teacher as his occupation. He was killed in action in Feb 1918. Are there any documents surviving from the Churchbridge school, and is there perhaps a plaque or memorial in the Anglican church there?

Togo, the family of Ian Abercrombie

I am looking for information about the family of a bachelor named Ian Abercrombie from Togo, SK.
He had a sister who has passed away. I'm not sure if she married; but if she did I would like to know the name of her husband so I could possibly find her children (if she had any).

Ian Abercrombie share some common ancestors. Anyone who may be able to provide information about him, his life in Saskatchewan, or his immediate family could help. I have plenty of information about his great-grandfather and his family going back from that point.

Charles Ferris (from Berkshire, England to Raymore, SK)

On behalf of one of my English friends (and sitant relative by marriage) I discovered on one of these discussion boards, I am looking for any information on Charles Ferris who lived in Raymore, SK.

Charles Ferris was born in 1893 in Newbury, Berkshire/Hampshire, England to Henry Ferris and Amelia Rosier. He married Winifred Ruth Purdue (b. 1896 in Newbury, Berkshire/Hampshire) in 1915 in Newbury. I did find Charles as being a citizen of Raymore but, unfortunately, there was no date so I do not know when he arrived in Saskatchewan or lived in Raymore. Charles and Winifred had a daughter, Joan Ferris, but I do not know when or where she was born.

Apparently both of his parents also came to Raymore; his father Henry died there in 1927 at 63 years of age. His mother, Amelia, died in Calgary in 1959, making her a whopping 96 years old.

Also, Charles' sister, Elsie Ferris, sailed from London, England in 1913 (accompanied by a male [?]) to Montreal but I cannot find her afterwards. She married Winifred's brother, Sydney Purdue, and they had a daughter, Gladys Amelia, born in 1921 in Calgary.

I am not terribly familiar with moving around the Saskatchewan and Albertan genealogical sites (my Canadian baliwick is New Brunswick) so I am hoping someone out there can provide a lead on how I can find more information about this Ferris family from England.

Thanking you kindly.

Regards,
Heather Holdgate
Whitby ON
verdun1950@rogers.com

Abbotsford News - Abbotsford, BC

Millie Rose

March 7, 1927 – April 8, 2007
Mildred Mary Rose was born Mildred Mary Hart on March 7, 1927 in Punnichy, Saskatchewan, the fifth of six children born to Clayton and Caroline Hart. Millie passed away suddenly on April 8, 2007 while with her son in North Vancouver.
When a very young child her family moved out west where Millie was raised along with her siblings in Matsqui and Mission. As a young woman Millie met her future husband Donald whom she married in 1950. Together, living in Hatzic, they raised their three children, afterward moving in 1986 to Chilliwack where they remained until Donald’s passing, after which Millie returned to Mission.
Millie’s passion was her family. She was a wonderful mother and wife. She enjoyed family gatherings and always looked forward to the next one. She also volunteered with charity organizations and supported family members through her caring spirit. She had genuine interest in people, and love of flowers and animals.
Millie was predeceased in March 2005 by Donald, her husband of 54 years, whom she dearly missed and by her sister Gladys Hood and three of her brothers Herb, Les and Tom.
Millie will be sadly missed and forever lovingly remembered by her family; daughters Barbara (Tony) Miniaci of Hatzic, Kathy Rose of Vancouver and by her son Bruce (Anna) Rose of North Vancouver and by her six adoring grandchildren, Mario, Michael, Paul, Carolyn, Annika and Jack; brother Mike (Freda), brother-in-law Doug Hood, sister-in-law Jean Hart, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Mark (‘Spud’) and Isabel Rose and by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Millie will be laid to rest at Hatzic Cemetery beside her beloved Donald at a private family service. Caring, kind, loving and sweet to her inner core, her wonderful -spirit will live on in all those that were fortunate enough to know her. She set an outstanding example of beauty through her patience, unselfishness, kindness, humility, unconditional love, calmness, sincerity and strength that will forever guide us. She has gifted us with wonderful memories and holds a very special place in our hearts.
Millie’s family sincerely thank all the many people who have supported Millie throughout her life and especially the kind and caring residents and staff of Carrington House, staff of Valley home Support and the staff and volunteers of the Pleasant View day program.
The family would appreciate donations in Millie’s memory to be made to: Tapestry Foundation for Health Care – The Centre for Healthy Aging at Providence 1101-3080 Prince Edward Street, Vancouver, BC V5T 3N4 or to a charity of your choice.
Arrangements entrusted to Woodlawn Mission Funeral Home 604 826-9548
